ATI HD 4870 Burned up upon logging in.

I havent played in months, so I fired up STO this weekend.
I had WOW running in a small window in the background, checking my auctions.
Upon logging into STO, i got to the Character select screen and BOOM!!! flame flashed from below
( i play on my TV and my pc sits below it, so I noticed the flash right away)
I ran over and pulled the power :(
This card is about 6 months old, still under warranty
It could have just been a bad card, but reading this forum it could be the card was overtaxed by the max FPS issue?
I ran out and got a HD 4650 which runs great btw!
Im going to send in the 4870 card, but now Iza scared to run STO again!!!!!

first thing you should do if your using a 4870 and CCC (no fan\temp tools) is enter CCC go to ATI overdrive and unlock it by clicking the big yellow\red handbag, ignore all the other settings and activate maual fan control and wack the speed up, 40% is uauly good enough if youve got good case cooling or set it higer. CCC is supposed to automatically controll fan speeds but with my 4870x2 at least ive found it only has 2 speeds low and high only kicks in once the temps reach 70-80c

next from the launcher options enter /maxfps 60 into advanced command line
ingame under video trouble shooting setcion set the max FPS to 60, you can then remove the advanced comand line
while your in video options you may also want to disable dynamic lighting to prevent other problems

edit: fan speed controlls have been a known issue for a while, |you could also try this work arround

If there was a flash, it sounds more like an electrical problem than overheating.
