I want this ship SO much, especially since it is Tier 5. Finding 5 people who want to play this game and then convincing them to go and buy it and subscribe for months at a time is a tall order. But this was a clever scheme, because you have got me addicted to attempting to somehow earn this ship by any means necessary.

The MU Uniform, Liberated Borg, Galaxy-X and whatever future 'exclusives' could avoid similar heated arguments over having them released by such a response.

Work hard and anything is possible, every major company uses referrals and most MMO have a recruit-a-friend program. With hard work, dedication and the belief that STO is a good game, you can get others to play, the thing is; if you don't convince people that you think it is a good game, it's unlikely they will want to move past the demo.
I'm up to 7 upgraded accounts at the moment and I am hoping all of them subscribe past the 30 days, if not I'll be forced to likely shell out $15 for each one that doesn't; just to get my ship.
I think it should remain exclusive though, this way you do not see EVERYONE flying it around. It's meant to be a symbol of hard work and dedication or alternatively, a symbol of your wallet.
It has been shown that this is all that will need to be done to be in the Galaxy X.
As some one who has told people "No you do not qualify" throughout every promotion we have had so far I assure you this does not work as well as you hope.

Their stance is indeed clear, as their only offical response to vocal and numerous protests was for Dstahl to come and drop details on how cool the ship is going to be (and dismiss us as a the 'regularly scheduled riot'), and then circular-file all the complaints and dissent into a "feedback" forum, where (despite promises to the contrary), no constructive or useful replies from cryptic have been made.
I am well aware of that situation. My point still stands though.
Ok, then how WELL does it work?

They dont acknowlege Feedback so telling them their support services is giving out items is pointless. Besides... they havent said what their definition of exclusive is... maybe its.
"Ask us we will give it to you"
Then again, maybe the GMs give out items to themselves... most MMOs have had similar situations with such people when they have that power.

Unfortunately there is no 'problem' in Cryptic's eyes. They have a very good carrot to try to squeeze people into making more money for them. It was a -very- shrewd tactic to introduce a "Real" t5 trek ship as a prize for getting them more money.
If you wish a canonical ship, you can choose either the assault cruiser (Sovereign) or the advanced escort (Prometheus).. Of course you could always buy some of their 'custom' ships.
As I have posted elsewhere, all else being equal (as in, no additional powers/abilities) the Galaxy-X makes a good choice for a referral award. It is a ship that is both distinctive and also barely-seen on screen, and it really does make a nice little gift for the people who manage to get five new accounts to buy the retail box and pay for an additional month. If you were going to give a reward for a recruiter, something distinctive and visible in-game, and more than just C-points, what else could it be?
Where things get hairy and uncomfortable for me is the additional functionality of the Galaxy-X. But it's hard to make a judgement on any of that since we still don't have details. Does it have an operational-level (non-battle) cloak? Just what does the axial superphaser do? We know it replaces a weapon slot, so is it balanced against, or more capable than, other weapons? We just don't know yet, and probably won't know until it's actually released and in the game. It might have JUST enough extra stuff to it to make it interesting but not gamebreaking. Or it might be OMZodBBQ OP! but we just don't know yet.*
This doesn't mean I'm not sympathetic towards or lack understanding of those who will not ever be able to get this ship. I know I won't; The people I know who might want to play STO are either already playing, too poor, or tried it and didn't like it. I've accepted that I'll never have this ship in my 'stable,' at least if it remains an exclusive to the R5F program. Still it's a bit of a bummer, but I'm accepting it since I just don't know what else would make a suitable cool reward for the R5F recruiters.
Honestly, barring any craziness surrounding the additional functionality, while I think Atari/Cryptic could have handled this a little better, there's not a lot to say against the idea of the Galaxy-X as a reward. That being said, if much more iconic ships (such as the Nebula, Excelsior, possibly even the NX refit) end up being exclusive rewards for out-of-game actions? That would... not be a really good idea. One is enough, more would be hard to justify. I'm pretty sure there won't be anything to worry about, though. Cryptic most likely won't make those ships, which have many more people clamoring for them, some sort of out-of-game exclusive.
* - On the other hand, I do know one thing: If the Galaxy-X can cloak, it will be ganged up on in PvP so completely, it will quickly earn the nickname "Photon Bait." I'm pretty sure the Klinks are none too happy with the possibility of a cloakable Fed ship in the game,

This, is sort of the issue I have taken with this. It is not just that it is being offered. But that it is the only modified lower-tier ship that will be available at all for the foreseeable future.
Were 'upgraded' Galaxy-Class ship available as tier 5 ships would I be quite so.. upset? No, not really. It is the fact that there is a noticeable -absence- of iconic, canonical ships at the endgame. Now, I understand that some people do like the stylized and created ships that cryptic has populated tier 5 with. But I don't. I want to captain the ships I have seen on the shows, the movies and not just toss them aside when I reach the end of the game.
So that is what upsets me the most. The galaxy-x itself? Meh? But it is the fact that is is the only pseudo-upgradeable ships that will be available for the foreseeable future. If Cryptic/Atari had introduced this after some sort of possible upgrade system, I would not mind that much at all.
Circumventing the system isnt going to make anyone look good on all parts.
This is a ship that was chosen as a recruitment reward........I'll probably never see it as I don't happen to know 5 people that can care less about the game let alone buy anything Star Trek. And thats the real problem here.....the Demo isnt enough to entice and the only ones intrested in the game off the bat are ST fans. Unless your holding a Monday night convention at your home with all of the ST nerds on the block......finding 5 people to buy the game and play it is an uphill battle. Im the only one I know that likes Star Trek....everyone else I know could give 2 poops about it.
Here is a reward that everyone wants...granted......but obtaining it for most is going to be an impossiblity for the above fact alone. The challenge should be a little easier to come about, where Cyrptic gets what they want and the people that play the game can get what they want.
Cryptic is like congress.........we complain, and they over-react,
we suggest, and it doesnt make the agenda
To Cryptic.....my homies.......my game creators and king of all things that blow up...if I may?
Instead of knee jerking when the negative nancys attempt to throw the masses under the bus,
How about thinking outside of the box....and look at the problem for what it really is in all of its simplicity.
Literally take a step back and ask yourself.......do we really need to crank on this problem this hard to achieve the same result?
There are other means to an end my dear Devs......Cryptic cannot be that obtuse in their deallings. Nor must you feel urgency when dealling with a small minority of people screaming to the heavens. Don't rush anything else because people want it now..................Just make it a fair logical assessment. We can't berate you guys for that in all fairness. In the end...the product will sell itself.
And we wont need the bribery of ones want and desires to play a game with all the perks.
I get where your coming from though........Capitolism...........Only in America.......
Well i personaly just hope that all items will eventualy become available inthe c-store or through game play unlocks.....but thats just my opinion i guess
I think its neat being able to get the stuff earlier before everyone else....but i think it would be more neat to have those same things eventualy available for other people.....and maybe instead have the pre-order thing...just letting people have newer things to play with first....
If i was in charge of the promo stuff for cryptic...the items and unlocks and things.....i would give them to the veteran palyers first....maybe as a thank you for their support.....and then give them out a month or two later in the veteran rewards program...then a month or two after that make the items available on the c-store.....
That way everyone can get the items.....people cant whine about costs becasue they can get the stuff for free....people cant whine about not getting something other people have becasue they can get them too...people cant whine about having to wait a long time becasue they will be inthe c-store so if they are realy new players they can just buy the items instead of waiting....and people cant whine about exclusive stuff becasue they get to try the stuff first.

If cryptic did that then noone would ever bother with their preorder deals again we would all just wait til we could get it cheap in the cstore or ingame i've got a bout a grand wrapped up in this game so far and would annoy me to no end if the stuff i paid for was given away or for less than i paid for it

I agree that these items should be available by other means, but the C-Store is NOT an option as it will alienate and pi$$ people off who worked hard to get said item. By offering it for a few hundred (or even a few thousand) CP, Cryptic would be shooting themselves once again in the foot. I am an advocate of the Vet program, though. It would award long-term players without annoying too many people. Reading through (and even posting in) several of this type of thread, there are lots of people who are willing to share their toys, but not for free or cheap.

But, of course, that is MY opinion.
Hear, Hear. I'm still trying to do things "the Cryptic way" but am having little success. C-Store Definitely is not the solution here. Vet Program seems viable though. Just make it for 500/600 Days, or higher, don't think they've gone that high for vet rewards yet... The Referral Program could have been planned out better. Cryptic seems to have evaded the key theme of success: MAKE EVERYTHING WORK FIRST BEFORE ADDING MORE STUFF THAT DOESN'T WORK. It's not rocket science people.
Now, as for trying things the way Cryptic wants, I have friends who are interested, they just either don't have systems capable of supporting it, they have already inputted a retail key [ by the way Cryptic, in my opinion, your next concern should be getting the referral system to be backwards compatable so our friends that already own the game can input our keys and we can input theirs. but no, that makes too much sense...] , they have recieved the key but don't plan on doing anything with it anytime soon, or they can't afford it.
um, just thought i would puth this fourth.... "Thats The Point, it's not suposed to be easy".
getting the Galaxy X through refferals is a reward for promoting the game, not an entitlement.
and if you could get it with cpoints or it was easy, everyone would have it. and there would be no reason to work twards anything. the galaxy x is probly the one thing worth working twards when it comes to in-game items.
it is more than fair. and on top of that you don't have to have even 5 diehard trek friends to make this work, just ask around... i mean i managed to get 3 people to sub for a month just to give it a try and mabe get them away from orld of worcrap for a change(at least for a bit.) they aren't trekies, they aren't sci-fi fans and are obsessed with wow, so, really, take it as it is. btw, your young.... :P
c'mon people what's the problem with actualy having to try for something, if it were an entitlement instead of a reward for promoting the game they would have already said it will be in the c-store.
as i see it, issues like this only arise when people who are upset they didn't pre-order because they dont' get the exclusive's or find out there is a bonus that they can't have because of one reason or the other, they whine and complain just for the shear fact that they like what it is and refuse to take part in an action that would benifit the game/company in anyway saying " i bought the game and am paying monthly fee's , now give me everything everyone else has."
what a waist of inteligence.
Nothing on the referral program should become C-Store available. Reason: they're available by a different method. Pre-order bonuses aren't available at all any more and that's why they're being added.

Vet reward? That's pretty much, giving away the ship for free. I am sure everyone here would agree that if this was available as a vet reward, not that many people would've tried to get five people to sign up, buy, and subscribe to the game, or let alone, dish out $200 out of their own pocket to get the ship.
There are already many dozens or even hundreds who spent days, possibly weeks, trying to recruit five people to get this ship. If Cryptic EVER decides to have this ship available via C-Store or even any other means, then as other posters have mentioned, no one will EVER fall for meaingless Cryptic's promotions, including pre-orders, tribble tests, and R5F programs.
Seriously, why spend extra time and risk participating in refer a friend program or buy pre-orders or any promotions Cryptic ask, when you can just seat around for several months, until Crpytic makes these items available via C-Store or Vet Reward?

You, like just about everyone like you miss the vital point of our complaints:
1.) WE already brought everyone we could with us when this game launched. thats what friends usually do - start a game (an mmo anyway...) together.
Now, many of those have left after discovering just how much a borefest this game really is (and nothing has changed in sto to retract that judgement) and are NOT coming back. Even if we tried, they already have their accounts set up.and we won't get credit.
2.) Buddy keys. Oh yes. Lets not count the effective refferals from those things.. that will not make people angry in the slightest.
3.) Its incredibly unfair to those people who simply are not in the position to con (err... refer...) 5 people into this game.
The choice of a fully functioning, fan favorite ship that offers several special abilities is the main reason this is such an hotly discussed issue.
On top of a heckload of crpytic points they add a structurally (cloak, cannons, special weapon) superior ship.
Its not just a ship skin, or a slight modification of what everyone else has. Its a complete and total departure from what everyone else gets. Not to mention the fluff related (cloaks!!!!) problems it has:
Why can this ship mounts heavy cannons when everyone else is locked out?
4.) They cou'd have added a multitude of things instead a whole freaking ship.
a transwarp ability thats lets you choose the destination?
a boost to sectorspace speed?
eternally free respecs?
Bonus free play time?
Get all pre order perks and items? After all, those were done right - no major impact on the game.
...
I'd really like to see if the reffered people actually stay on longer than a month/60 days gtc time.
My suspicion is: they won't. Since they are no real referrals but a select number of people who forked over ~ 150$ to get this huge, 3 naccelled MacGuffn.
Job well done cryptic, bill ropers influence is strong in you.
No, you obviously did not actually THINK when writing that.

I have 7 total referrals that have paid for the game & their 30 days of gametime after the first month was up. They all play in my fleet.
I am sure there are other people with real referrals, since I managed to get 7.
Not everyone thinks like you and will just hand over money for something, some of us do it properly.

That way everyone can get the items.....people cant whine about costs becasue they can get the stuff for free....people cant whine about not getting something other people have becasue they can get them too...people cant whine about having to wait a long time becasue they will be inthe c-store so if they are realy new players they can just buy the items instead of waiting....and people cant whine about exclusive stuff becasue they get to try the stuff first.
but as i said...this is simply my opinion....
If cryptic did that then noone would ever bother with their preorder deals again we would all just wait til we could get it cheap in the cstore or ingame i've got a bout a grand wrapped up in this game so far and would annoy me to no end if the stuff i paid for was given away or for less than i paid for it
Yeah, you get to keep your friends!
Anyway, here's my two bits and rant.
getting the Galaxy X through refferals is a reward for promoting the game, not an entitlement.
and if you could get it with cpoints or it was easy, everyone would have it. and there would be no reason to work twards anything. the galaxy x is probly the one thing worth working twards when it comes to in-game items.
it is more than fair. and on top of that you don't have to have even 5 diehard trek friends to make this work, just ask around... i mean i managed to get 3 people to sub for a month just to give it a try and mabe get them away from orld of worcrap for a change(at least for a bit.) they aren't trekies, they aren't sci-fi fans and are obsessed with wow, so, really, take it as it is. btw, your young.... :P
c'mon people what's the problem with actualy having to try for something, if it were an entitlement instead of a reward for promoting the game they would have already said it will be in the c-store.
as i see it, issues like this only arise when people who are upset they didn't pre-order because they dont' get the exclusive's or find out there is a bonus that they can't have because of one reason or the other, they whine and complain just for the shear fact that they like what it is and refuse to take part in an action that would benifit the game/company in anyway saying " i bought the game and am paying monthly fee's , now give me everything everyone else has."
what a waist of inteligence.
I think the AGT Galaxy looks dumb anyway.
Maybe I could CON 5 of my worst enemies into buying subs and the game for one month?
So I could get the Photonic boff and uber 1701-D, Cause I like my friends
Or how about Cryptic just apply them to my account for asking nicely? Please
Cause all my worst enemies are way to smart to fall for the stuff my friends would :P
No, you obviously did not actually THINK when writing that.
I have 7 total referrals that have paid for the game & their 30 days of gametime after the first month was up. They all play in my fleet.
I am sure there are other people with real referrals, since I managed to get 7.
Not everyone thinks like you and will just hand over money for something, some of us do it properly.
