Eh, I was expecting downtime since it's still a headstart, it's just the beginning of the launch phase.

However, I'm disappointed at how vague the devs are being, there's no info about this problem, no status update. we don't even know why the servers are down.

    No.
Hell, I scrolled down the page, saw the word "TRIBBLE", thought about Godwin's Law... and you did it on purpose. :/

I did say a bit of comment sense too. Remeber we have situation, which we have been told, where buy everyone can talk to everyone in the same sector as you. This leads me to assume that there must be 1 master Server somewhere, I could be wrong, BUT if this is the case and this one has died then it will take the how lot down. As for them being a cluster all that would have to mean is x amount fell over at once. Some times new kit just dies.

I should also point out I'm not an uder techy ... I just work in the industry and am constantly trying to gain new info, like cluster servers which as far as I have found out in the last 5 min seem to work abit like a raid array (I could still be wrong as I haven't had the lid of a cluster set up yet but thats learning for you)

In an mmorpg cluster (or shard, or blade, or server or whatever you call it), there are multiple parts. there are often a chat server, a login server, a world server, mail server, etc.... the reason why you can talk to everyone in the same zone (whatever instance they are) is due to the chat server which is (normally) completely separated from the world server.

In many games, you can talk to pplz on other servers or even talk to pplz in other games. For example, you could type : to urkam playing starwars galaxies by using this setup swg.starsider.urkam if you are in everquest 2 or vanguard. This is the SOE chat server setup, but most of the companies are actually using the same principle.

There are numerous other example where if the chat server goes down, you can still play the game. Warhammer online (from Mythic, not SOE) had a few examples of this shortly after release of the game.

When a server/cluster crash, it's rarely due to a defect single physical server. Most of the time, it's a network problem. That's why, during open and closed beta, most of the time, when a server crash, they said that the networks admin are on it.
