Dell failed to supply Cryptic with their new server software keys on time,
now the server software keeps throwing up a nag screen which
effectively crashes the Login Hardware :D

    Dell = FAIL

Cryptic = EPIC Win for the awesomeness of the game :D

If they have a server contract with Dell, then they are doomed for failure.

Maybe Cryptic changed the hardware on the servers more than 10 times and their license key for Windows has been invalidated.

This forum thread now qualifies as a new mmo type game. "Star Trek Online's Unexpected Downtime Thread". I hope they don't charge 14.99 a month to read it tho :( But, I think they may just wanna focus their dev efforts on this thread, clearly it's where the playerbase seems to want to spend time. Give Kilngons the Troll class and you'll never have to worry about faction inbalance.

POST TO 500!!! GO GO GO !

I just bought a lifetime subscription to THIS thread. It will last for years and be fresh as new content is added before you can even imagine finishing current missions. You can use the Transwarp Conduit to get the end game content but it's a paradox in time because the end is not the end ... it's only somewhere in the middle. I love the side trips to YouTube, very much like the Exploration Missions in various sectors, you never know what you'll get.

And it's only $229.00 for a life time of fun. Game, computer, and drinks not included.

    Unbelievable!

Don't pander to me, kid. One tiny crack in the SERVER and our blood boils in thirteen seconds. Solar flare might crop up, cook us in our seats. And wait till you're sitting pretty with a case of Andorian shingles, see if you're so relaxed when your eyeballs are bleeding. STAR TREK ONLINE is disease and danger wrapped in darkness and silence.

And that's just the early start.

Here, have a "Be more perceptive of what is obviously a sarcastic response from an understandably frustrated player." pill.

You hope he's banned for that? Really? Speaking of mentally wrong...

Sorry telling people to give the devs "aids" is not funny and anyone who things it is.. has a serious mental issue

Blizzard has just completed the purchase of Cryptic and has shut the company's new STO servers down indefinitely. A Blizzard rep was quoted as saying, " Once we get the MR. T Mohawk into the game, everything will be back online."

    Classic!

But an update would be nice!

Art Instruction Schools. There, Schulz grew with the support of an artistic community. He practiced his drawing and met many of the people who would inspire his future work (including a friend named Charlie Brown and a girl with red hair who broke his heart). With growing confidence and an expanding portfolio, Schulz blanketed the comics market with samples of his work. Eventually, his persistence paid off and he sold a number of single comic panels in the "Saturday Evening Post." Buoyed by his success in the national magazine market, Schulz went on to land a weekly comic feature called "L'il Folks" in the St. Paul Pioneer Press. The fruit of his creativity and labor, "L'il Folks" featured Charlie Brown and Shermy and became the sole focus of Schulz's career. When asked now if he thought the strip would last, Schulz replies "Sure, I thought it would last. I never intended to draw something that wouldn't last. In fact, when I started out, I thought, 'I'll be drawing this the rest of my life.'"

Marketing "L'il Folks" to syndicates around the country, Schulz finally received a reply from Jim Freeman at United Feature Syndicate. Freeman, a well-respected editor with 30 years' experience, wisely suggested that Schulz expand the comic from one panel to a strip format. Schulz had already been toying with the idea and jumped at the chance to accommodate the syndicate. The new strip format was different from other "kid strips" of the time in that each strip dealt with only a brief incident. The result was a strip with only four panels and a concept that United Feature Syndicate fell in love with. After being invited to visit their offices in New York City, Schulz signed a five-year contract with United Feature Syndicate and began his career as a full-time cartoonist. He celebrated with a steak dinner. The celebration was short-lived, however, when Schulz learned of the syndicate's first major decision. Because of legal issues surrounding the name "L'il Folks" ("Little Folks" and "L'il Abner" already existed), the strip was renamed "PEANUTS." This name made Schulz cringe. To this day, he feels the name connotes "insignificant" or "unimportant." But the syndicate and the newspaper market loved the idea. The strip, with its small size and matching name, was marketed as the flexible format for any newspaper. The strip was touted as "The Greatest Little Sensation Since Tom Thumb." Little attention was given to its insightful text and endearing drawings. But the comic's "foot" was in the door. It took several years for readers to grow attached to the PEANUTS gang. But nearly fifty years later, "PEANUTS" has grown into one of the longest running, most popular comics of all time.

Over the years "PEANUTS" has expanded beyond the realm of daily comics, growing beyond Charles Schulz's wildest dreams. In 1952 John Selby of Rinehart and Company took a risk when he published a collection of comics as "PEANUTS" the book. Little did he know the idea would inspire an entirely new genre in publishing. In 1961 Connie Boucher, a housewife from San Francisco, approached Schulz with the idea of creating a "PEANUTS" calendar. Schulz agreed to the idea and, putting a second mortgage on her home, Boucher produced the very first "PEANUTS Datebook." Snoopy put character merchandising on the map. Later Snoopy dolls, T-shirts, bedding, wris****ches, toothbrushes, and a host of other trinkets took the merchandising market by storm. Today you and your family can visit with Snoopy and the gang in person at your local shopping mall, watch them on videotape on your television, enjoy them in a school play or off-Broadway musical, marvel at their maneuvers in an ice arena, or even interact with them on CD-ROM on your computer.[/QUOTE]
Star Trek Online, often abbreviated as STO, is a massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) developed by Cryptic Studios based on the popular Star Trek series created by Gene Roddenberry. The game is set in the 25th century, 30 years after the events of Star Trek: Nemesis.[3] Star Trek Online will become the first massively multiplayer online role-playing game within the Star Trek franchise, and will be released on February 2, 2010.[4]

Initially, Perpetual Entertainment developed the game from 2004 to 2008 until its bankruptcy in January 2008. The license to develop the game and art assets were transferred to Cryptic Studios; however, the code remained with Perpetual Entertainment and its Perpetual Game Engine.

Cryptic Studios officially announced its development of Star Trek Online on July 28, 2008, as a countdown timer on Cryptic's web site reached zero and the new official site was launched. [5] A letter was sent out from Jack Emmert, the game's online producer, detailing some aspects of Cryptic's approach.[6]

Cryptic has announced that they will release a Windows version of STO, and possibly a console version. During the Las Vegas conference in August 2008, Cryptic announced that there would be neither Linux nor Mac versions for the original launch, though they did not rule out the possibility of later port releases.[7]

Cryptic announced that Star Trek Online will release in North America on February 2, 2010, and in Europe on February 5, 2010. Customers who ordered the game in advance would be able to gain access to the game on January 29, 2010, before its official release date.
    [edit] Conference in Las Vegas

On August 10, 2008, a conference was held in the Hilton hotel in Las Vegas. Leonard Nimoy and the leader of Cryptic studios revealed the first gameplay trailer, featuring various Federation and Klingon starships in combat with each other and Borg vessels, as well as footage of a Klingon squad boarding a Federation ship's bridge.[8] The release date was not publicly revealed except that it would be less than three years.
    [edit] Beta releases

Closed beta for Star Trek Online officially began when it was announced on October 22, 2009.[9] Cryptic Studios offered guaranteed beta access to users who bought 6-month and lifetime subscriptions to Champions Online. However, the offer did not explicitly state how early in the beta process the access will be granted.[10]

On November 19, 2009 Cryptic announced that Star Trek Online would exit Closed Beta and begin Open Beta from January 12 to 26, 2010.[11]

At 10:00 Am PST January 29 2010, The scheduled Head Start Program for individuals with pre-orders began.
    [edit] Gameplay and dynamics
This section contains predictions, speculative material or accounts of events that might not occur. Please help improve it by removing speculative content. (December 2009)

According to the official website,[1] each player will be captain of his or her own ship, serving either the United Federation of Planets or the Klingon Empire. It also stated that players will be able to beam down onto the surfaces of different planets "for face-to-face confrontations". Exploration of the inside of starships will, at launch, be limited to the bridge[12] and certain episodes (missions); however, it has been stated by Cryptic that they will introduce fully explorable starship interiors not too long after launch.

The first announcement of the game structure took place at the official Star Trek convention in Las Vegas in August 2008. It was announced that players could play as a Starfleet, or Klingon officer, or can create entirely new races. Adventures will be possible in space, on planets, or aboard ships.[13][14][15][16] Every player will be captain of their own individual ship; in keeping with naval tradition, anyone who commands a ship, regardless of his or her 'actual' rank, is considered a 'captain'.[17] Their ships will have a number of crewmen who will all be NPCs.[18]

According to an interview by GameSpot with Cryptic Studios' executive producer Craig Zinkievich, there will be references to several famous storylines, ships, and characters from various Star Trek shows. One confirmed Star Trek film reference was revealed when Zachary Quinto announced, at the 2009 Spike TV Video Game Awards, that he will be "the voice of Atari's new ‘STAR TREK ONLINE' game".

A system called the "Genesis System" will allow Cryptic Studios to algorithmically create and add new star systems to the game. [19] Players will be able to explore these uncharted star systems, and might find content which opens up new resources and technologies. Players may find races with various special abilities who can be recruited to the players' crew.[20]

The game will feature two very different combat systems. Away-team missions will feature fast paced "run and gun" combat. Space combat will stress the long-term tactical aspect of combat between capital ships, in concert with the Star Trek storyline, and will entail positioning, shifting power between weapons and shields, and finding various weaknesses.[20]

There might be a Galactic Economy, which would be based on trade, and might fluctuate like a stock market.[21] It will be possible for players to pool resources to form fleets or guilds. Quests will be issued from Central Command, and players can join together on the ground. Gameplay will be fully co-operative, and dynamic events will be one part of the game. A "system of infinite exploration" will enable players to find and explore random, uncharted planets.[22]

There will be a variety of ship classes which can be used by all players. Playable ship classes will not be restricted based on a player's specialty.[23]
    [edit] Pre-order specials

Cryptic Studios has partnered with several retailers for distribution of preorder copies. Each retailer has a version with unique and exclusive content, such as a Borg Bridge Officer, Chromodynamic Armor or a Tribble pet. All versions of the game come with access to the Open Beta and Head Start launch date.[24]

In addition, the code for a "Wrath of Khan" Admiral's uniform is included in the DVD release of "The Best of Star Trek: The Next Generation Volume 2" and the Blu-ray release of "Star Trek: The Original Series -- Season 3."[25]

Also, Cryptic partnered with Del Taco to offer codes with collectible cups that come with a Type 8 Shuttlecraft non-combat "pet".[26]
    [edit] Community

Even though Star Trek Online has not yet been released, there is already an active community forming on the developer's official website forum[27]. The development team, including the Lead Online Community Representative and the Executive Producer, also post regularly on Twitter.[28][29]
