Roadmap For 2024?

mark#1633 mark Member Posts: 40 Arc User
Hi all.

I seem to remember that the STO team used to give us a roadmap to what was coming up in 2024 for the game? With the Priority One podcast no longer running (sad times!) and the upheaval within the team at Cryptic/Gearbox or whomever own it now, communication with the player base is rather... well, it's fallen through a black hole.

So is anyone in the know on what we can expect for the game this year? I feel like it's starting to become a game which isn't invested in anymore. Not to be one of the doomsayers or anything, seems like there is much more content and so many stories to tell... Equally, I usual, the architecture of what is now, an old game is probably very very limiting.

Anyway, original question really... LLAP!

It fell through the black hole over a decade ago - it just looks like it's been circling it without actually falling in because of relativity.
Like special weapons from other Star Trek games? Wondering if they can be replicated in STO even a little bit? Check this out: https://forum.arcgames.com/startrekonline/discussion/1262277/a-mostly-comprehensive-guide-to-star-trek-videogame-special-weapons-and-their-sto-equivalents

A normie goes "Oh, what's this?"
An otaku goes "UwU, what's this?"
A furry goes "OwO, what's this?"
A werewolf goes "Awoo, what's this?"

We really don't get roadmaps anymore as plans can change, and people tend to go aggro when the roadmap isn't followed to the letter.
As for not being invested in anymore... I don't think that's true as we still have many things coming on the horizon. We got the upcoming Anniversary event, and Kael had said in previous livestreams he's seen the Anniversary ship. Story missions take time to make, especially at the quality we've been getting the last few years. And we keep getting Trek veterans to reprise their roles.

It may not be as big as FF14, but its relatively consistant all year round.

Ballpark estimate, bout the same as last year. Story missions, events, seasonal events... we might hear about some plans in the first livestream of the year.

A lot of things going on behind the scenes after all.

Good to know. Yeah I get the story missions, gone are the days when we'd get a 15 episode season with a 4-5 story arc in the middle.

What is going on behind the scenes?

I wish they'd clean up some of the older legacy issues like Starbase 24 mission etc which hasn't been around for 5+ years now.

We need that to come back SB24 was great far better then the Defend Star Base One. Same for NWS the revamped version is x10 worse then the original.

Besides the whole thing going on with Gearbox, which shouldn't really impact the game itself as that's more higher end stuff rather than Dev level, most likely new year stuff along with usual Game Development stuff.

STO is still going pretty strong. Its not FF14 level, but still pretty strong.

I think what people are fearing isn't STO dying due to its own merits but rather Embracer shutting down Cryptic for what ever reason, regardless of how well STO is doing.

Honestly the same can be said of ANY game out there.
Spend all your time worrying about what ifs, you stress yourself out too much to enjoy what we have.

Far as I know, Cryptic is in a pretty good spot. Three active MMOs, two of which are in known IPs, and one of which has been pretty involved with the IP owner.

More Episodes for the Current Story arc, the Final part of the Event campaign, since Feast hasn't happened yet on consoles and maybe Disco Andorians.

Cryptic will now be under DECA. Embracer is not using DECA to develop new games. Cryptic if it continues is going to be a very very different company. Cryptic has been downgraded from a developer to a maintainer.

Unless Embracer is planning to change the nature of DECA? Doesn't seem likely to me.

This isn't a doom and gloom post either. I don't think that is a bad thing. Cryptic hasn't been able to ship a game since Neverwinter. That is 10 years of game development down the drain. Maybe a trim down and refocus on the games they have already released, will be a good thing for Cryptics live games.

It would be nice to hear something from the people running things at some point though. As customers it would be nice to know they have a plan, and the game isn't going to go marvel heros good bye weekend with a days notice.

Son, if you want to see what a Cryptic game looks like in maintenance mode, go play Champions Online. There hasn't been any new content in a couple of years, since they added a short series involving one of the gangs at the docks getting hold of a mystic upgrade that only applied in that mission. Other than that, it's repeats of events all year, and sometimes a couple of new costume pieces.

After this current year storyline is finished - STO will likely be in the same boat. Any new content they roll out in Q1 2024 was probably 'in the works'/'done' prior to EMBRACER enacting their cost cutting due to the financing deal that blew up in their face.

Same for Neverwinter I would imagine.

You'd be right, if the IP's were transferred to DECA, unfortunately for you, they haven't. Cryptic is still a working and profit making company in it's own right, DECA just becomes the publisher....that...is...all! And just because DECA specialises in keeping long-time games ALIVE, doesn't mean DOOM for STO.

There's waaaaay too much scare-mongering going on here, where folk haven't a clue what is actually happening. This current arc is going right through the 15th Anni, and as far as I've heard (and read about DECA), there's zip all to worry about.

I said my post wasn't doom and gloom it isn't.

Cryptic working on new titles for the past decade has had no benefit for STO or Neverwinter. A move to a publisher that isn't looking for new titles to publish... means yes Cryptic is fundamentally a different company then it was 6 months ago. They are no longer in the business of creating new games. The people at cryptic that were working on new projects are all going to be reassigned or let go... thing is that is pretty much everyone.

I do believe this will be a net positive for STO. The people at Cryptic going forward will have zero tasks that don't involve one of their existing games. (that might suck for Cryptic in terms of staffing levels and being able to retain talent) It would be nice at some point to get an idea of what the plans are. Is it going to be event replay x infinity. Are they going to continue adding new items... developing new game content? At this point no one knows... heck they might not even know at this point. Its not like STO was getting monthly content or anything for a few years now... but it would be nice to know if any is planned going forward. If not well then it would also be nice to know what their plans are to keep the game engaging and fun to play and maybe even continue spending money on.

    - my point being yes the publisher Cryptic works under matters quite a bit. Embracer is no longer having Cryptic develop new games it seems. That is going to impact STO... I think maybe positively. Cryptic is going to be a smaller company however. It would just be nice to hear someone there or at DECA speak on the subject.

To be fair... the last new thing they were going to do was that Magic MMO that fell through, which I think was not Cryptic's fault but the owners of Magic. Other than that they have been focusing on developing their existing games. I don't know the status of Champions, but Neverwinter and STO have been getting updates quite regularly.

As for knowing whats coming up, Kael has said in the past that the current story arc is probably going to be around 2 years. And of course we have the livestreams where things are discussed and even revealed. However the main rule was not to discuss unreleased content.

And as I had said before, Cryptic hasn't done a roadmap for a long time because plans change. They had intended to do a Mirror arc after the Gamma one, but then they shifted gears entirely. And honestly with this community... a lot of people do get the pitchforks if things aren't released as declared as if anything they say is absolutely set in stone.

And you're unlikely to have anyone from DECA come to the STO forums to address your questions. You're more likely to get an answer out of the Community Manager. I can ask if we're restarting the Q&A stuff later.

Well, there were those two "secret projects" (which people from STO, like Bort, were rolled into) which were recently cancelled, so it's not like Magic was the only game they worked on developing in the last decade.

Maybe while you do that, mention we're still waiting on the answers to the last Q&A, from over a year ago.
It's not likely we're going to hear from anyone about this until at least April and the start of the new fiscal year. But as others have said, some word about the future of the game from the powers that be would go a long way towards reassuring their customers.

At this point I don't think anyone is asking for SPECIFIC... content information. I don't think anyone is looking for gotacha info... we just want to know the game is actually going to be around for a 15th. I mean at this point I'm pretty sure the 14th is going to end up being some sort of rerun, I can see the 14th prize being something like the Bajoran Denorios Interceptor, with it leaving phoenix and going mudd at the end of the event. That would be in keeping with what DECA has done with other properties.

If that IS NOT the plan... and DECA intends to have Cryptic continue actively developing new content. A simple hey nothing much is going to change carry on would be cool. For sure it would make it easier to take part in zen sales. lol

I think one of those secret projects was the magic thing. No doubt though we don't even know how many games they cancelled. Its my understanding its a min of two. I mentioned neverwinter... as that is the last new title Cryptic actually shipped. 10 YEARS of development, imagine the sunk costs. I don't know how many people they had on those canceled projects but imagine 2-3m a year in salary alone for a decade with zero ROI. Anyway sorry not trying to trash Cryptic... I guess I just did though I really don't know how they survived the magic cancel. I know STO and Neverwinter are profitable, still no one is in business to break even.

In several livestreams Kael actually said that he had seen the Anniversary ship, and that it is beautiful. That to me tells me its not a repeat. They also most likely have the next story mission ready to launch with the Anniversary, like they usually do.

It would just be nice to hear that is still the plan. I guess we are getting close to when they would announce such things anyway. We'll see. I mean even if they had paid for the model to be made that doesn't mean they didn't go pencils down before it was ready to be added to the game. I mean the borg lockbox ship we just got was obviously unfinished. Anyway up to Cryptic/DECA I'm sure we'll get information at some point. Its too costly to say nothing forever.

In addition to that, I wouldn't expect anything major for at least another few days: based on how little we the Community Team have heard from Kael for the last while, I suspect Cryptic are still on their own winter break. Most we've heard recently is chitchat with our customer service contact about game builds.

Give it time, have some nog.

We just want some communication from Embracer/DECA/Cryptic about the plans for the future of the game, past the rapidly upcoming 14th Anniversary, so we don't have to worry about fear mongering. A little communication goes a long way, now more than ever with all the uncertainty going on.

Speaking of the Anniversary ship it would be funny if it was the Discovery season 3 Starfleet HQ

Na just the company now publishing STO. Gearbox was the previous publisher. Gearbox publishes new games.(we know they shelved the unannounced game they were working on and it seems they let most of their new game talent go) DECA does not publish new games all they do is run old ones. So the assumption is Cryptic is no longer in the business of making new games. They haven't really announced much at this point other then Cryptic is now under DECA. Thing is STO hasn't really had full time developers for ages, most of Cryptics talent was working on multiple projects. So it raises a lot of questions about who and how STO will be run in the future. It would be nice to get even a vague outline of a STO future... or admission that maintenance mode is the plan once they get the last of the Cryptic made stuff out.
