There it is again... The Too much work excuse for not doing something. And 3-4 days? What's 3-4 days if it means adding something that would factor into potentially YEARS of use? Cryptic needs to stop with the "It's too much work" line. Especially when the game goes literal years without bugs being fixed or new functionality added. So the line is wearing thin.
They explained in the Livestream WHY it was too much work. And that it would potentially cause the servers to blow up because of HOW that trait works. Some traits work off Captain abilities, which BOffs don't have, and others like Bond With Life... the way it works would cause server problems if applied to BOffs as is. And they said that the list of traits that weren't compatible with BOffs was actually very small. Less than 10 actually. Like... 5-6. So honestly unless you're wanting to make the absolute biggest army in the game... no real loss.
If Boffs are now going to be promotable beyond Commander, then this is a necessity. Not doing it just comes of as being half-baked, with just the bare minimum of effort done. If you guys are going to do this, please take the time and put in the effort to do it as completely as possible.
They're not being promoted above Commander rank. People are hoping they could put Captain insignia on them with the Elite BOff token. Our Captain aren't suddenly the Joint Chiefs of Starfleet because we use an Elite Captain token. Our ships don't suddenly become the Federation Flagship when we use a T6X token. Its a way to upgrade the quality of a BOff and make them better. I don't know where the idea that they are being promoted beyond Commander is coming from other than wanting a cosmetic unlock for said BOff.
@rattler2 This is what happens when someone doesn't bother to watch the livestream themselves to get the information firsthand, but rather relies on someone else to provide the information but with that person's understanding/interpretation, then comes on the forum to complain/criticize.
then as a community mod, you could take the time to pinpoint the time stamp (and links) in the stream to "educate" people on the replies you feel are unwarranted interpretations etc. rather than you, as a mod, criticize and complain about people posting based on the lists given.
just sayin...
Well, "as a mod" that doesn't exactly fall under the job description, but seeing as I have often gone above and beyond before, I suppose I could do something like that, yeah. But "as a player/member," as I was posting here, I can offer up my opinions/observations as well. I mean, it works for you, right?

it does for sure. but i dont have a duality role within these forums as you do, thus blurring the lines of moderation and posting.
Baddmoon seems to be adopting a similar method to me on identifying when he's speaking as a forumite and when he's speaking as a mod. For me its just plain text for forumite, cyan for mod. He's going blue for forumite, gold for mod.
I change the color of my text to basically say "pay attention guys." And it does work. For the most part because its different.
you are right. we are not CPTs, we are FAs (fleet admirals).
i dont see any issue with allowing promotions to CPT for our boffs given this update coming.
i mean an FA really wouldnt be piloting and be in "command" of a ship the real way a "CPT" would be.
Fleet Admiral by rank, but not by duties. For all intents and purposes we're still Captains, and are referred to as such in official server messages. Our rank is really just part of the leveling system to give us titles. I'm content to just show Captain on my uniform.

That is one of the reasons I started the Video Archive thread. And every once in a while I poke Kael to update the YouTube Channel I linked to if I notice it hasn't been updated. Accessability was the goal. I can either talk to Kael about a transcript or a more official cliffnotes version with timestamps, or I can coordinate with Baddmoon and the other mods. For now we'll probably continue to rely on Som's cliffnotes and elaborate when we can if we watched it ourselves. This sort of thing would be one the mods would need to discuss IMO as technically its not "our job" to cover the livestreams, but as Baddmoon said, we can go above and beyond.
I can't take it anymore! Could everyone just chill out for two seconds before something CRAZY happens again?!

I consider most of my characters to be captains
That role fits the gameplay the best. (Though lately, some of them have been even just commanders, XO's or civilian experts aboard a ship under someone else's command - many tasks like leading away teams, serving in engineering or taking command in a combat situation fit those jobs just as well as a captain's).
And if all my characters were admirals, it would kind of lose its meaning to hold that rank. Instead, the rank of full admiral is reserved for two early characters - early referring to both when they were created as well as where I place them in the timeline:
I know the game assumes that only one of our captains really exists and that he/she went through all the content, not a dozen others too. But I deviated from that a long time ago and created my own timeline, side stories and developments - with many different toons playing different roles in some events and some getting their ships 30 or even 80 years after another the first ones.
Whenever I want a certain boff to be a captain, I just create a new toon and update their bio (or even only do the latter), adding a few years to it usually to describe how they got their own command.
I can imagine that not too many players do it like this - but I also doubt there are many players who run dozens of toons and pretend that they are all admirals - who also all became an admiral through the exact same process. I'm guessing that it's usually just one. All the others are likely captains themselves.
Or players just don't care about it at all because they're too casual to bother about these things that have zero impact on actual gameplay.
So either way, a feature that lets us officially promote our Boffs to captain-game rank, will likely not be used that much.

I love your head canon for your toons. 😍 I do something similar myself, as I'm running around 52 toons currently. Only 3 of mine would really be considered FA level, and those are my mains in the FED, KDF, and ROM Factions. The rest are lower admirals, captains, and a few "independents." I have head canon story that has them all interconnected in some way, but only the mains are considered to have gone through their Faction storyline missions.

now for the CPT vs FA bit. i wear CPT pips/insignia as well. but this argument has been floating around since they didnt listen to the player base and adopted the FA with the rank progression. so the argument/discussion becomes a valid point when we are actually FAs in game terms. again, i see no valid reason to "not" have our boffs as CPTs. hell, even disco carried two CPTs on one ship. (and i loathe that series)
We may not be able to promote our BOffs to Captain rank, but they did kick around the idea of asking if we can unlock Captain pips with the Elite BOff token. So the idea is technically on the board. I guess well just have to wait and see what happens.

i get that he has adopted the two color references...but he often takes jabs at people in his replies, such as in this thread. and being he has the green title, that doesnt sit well with people. i get it, its hard to want to justify editing out what people say, then to allow yourself to be "un-edited." that is why i said its rather blurry when it comes to his posts. nuff said.

more official cliff notes with time stamps would be great, and i know bmr mentioned he "could" assist in that, but i am not asking him to do additional free work for the community, nor you.
"He?" 🤔 Hmm, I feel like this is taking a jab at me. 😉 LOL

Even if we don't "promote" our BOFFs above commander, it would be nice to at least let them gain access to the captain's pips as a costume unlock. It is canonically supported as well. Both Spock and Scotty were captains serving under Kirk in the movies.

I did that two weeks ago using the YouTube AI closed captioning as a basis. It took about 2 hours (3 hours if you count the initial viewing). If you wanted to type all the notes by hand too—I’ve done that before when I was an Anthropologist. It generally takes about an hour for every 20 minutes of video or audio you have. It would be nice if someone did that every week, but it is a pretty big project.
Just putting time stamps on Som’s notes wouldn’t take nearly as long. With Google’s notes it would take the 20 minutes to read and make sense of the notes—maybe 40 minutes total. If you just watched the video—it would take roughly the length of the video plus 20 minutes.

If I had time to watch the livestream, I would have. Things going on in my personal life have put me under serious time constraints. I do intend to watch the content, but in the meantime, I only have the summary to go on. I was not aware that they went into a detailed explanation. I'm sorry, but you do not know me. You do not know the things I am having to deal with. Next time, think twice before popping off with something clever-sounding to your own mind. You pull that again and I shall have no choice but to report you to a moderator...
Cool. Wasn't meant to be "clever-sounding." And I rarely "pop off." It was just a personal observation. But you do you, dude. I'll be over here waiting. 😉

Respectfully... instead of getting into a sparring match with people... could ask for clarification from those who might have watched it on details you're not sure about. There are bound to be Forumites who did watch it and could provide more detail.

In all honesty, sits, it wasn't really meant to be a swipe at you personally. It was just an observation about general behavior I've seen from some. You just happened to be the example. Sorry, if I came off a bit harsh. You're right, I don't know you, or anyone else for that matter, and what personal things they have going on that might prevent them from watching the livestream or even the recording. My apologies if you were offended.

As an Autistic player, I can and do struggle to parse large amounts of information delivered verbally via the likes of the livestreams, so am reliant on those who are generous enough to go to the trouble of providing notes for them.
An official transcript would certainly be of great benefit to someone like myself - and as has been suggested might lead to a little less disagreement over interpretation.
