Taking a ship for a spin before opening it for REAL?

Not sure if this is possible. If you get a locked ship (say a Liberated Borg Command Juggernaut or similar) can you test drive it in Tribble before you actually open it for real in Holodeck?

I'm having buyer's remorse from opening one of those prized ships and wish I could not have opened and still test drive it with option to sell if I don't like it. Just wondering if there is away or stuck with it no matter what.

Yes. You can copy your character with the boxed ship over to Tribble and try her out. However it is dependant on having access to the Tribble Test Server.

You will have to copy the procedure each time unless you have several boxes on your character at the time you copy them over, as you are literally copying over the character AS IS at the moment you click the button.

Hell... there have been people here on the forums in the past who have declared that they were willing to GIVE people lockbox ships on Tribble to test fly.

Yes, if you copy the character with the UNOPENED ship pack to Tribble you can open it there to see if you like it. Then if you dont you can go back to live and toss it on the exchange.

i am sure there would be stipulations or limitations to this so it cant be abused, as i am sure some will find ways...lol

I can see one issue with that. Most experienced players... take issue with stock Cryptic builds. And rental ships would either have to rely only on stock builds or somehow allow for custom player builds without risking the gear disappearing when the rental time expires. Not only that, its entirely possible that a good portion of that stated rental time may be eaten up by setting the ship up FOR use.

They'd also have to find a way for that to NOT be exploited for ship traits as you can easily level a ship in 2-3 of the RIGHT patrols with enough DPS. And depending on HOW the rental system is set up... it could basically just be treated as a farm for starship traits. Pick a ship, rent, level to trait, strip and let expire.

There is also the test server. You could copy your character over there with the option box unused then open it there and test the ship for however long you want, then go back and copy the live one over again from the point before you opened it and pick a different ship, etc.

Also there are ways of getting a lot of different ships "free" on the test server that you would have to pay for on the live server from what I hear (one of these days I will get around to downloading the test client since I have a magnetic drive again and don't have to squeeze everything onto the SSD anymore).

I'm not sure if they want to give players a try before you buy function. This could be part of why the C-store is disabled on Tribble. Apparently test drives don't necessarily have a positive impact on ship sales.
