As long as I've been playing I've never really paid much attention to the combat log, but I'm working on a new plasma torpedo boat and during a Starbase One TFO today I got a pretty decent crit, so I went to look in the combat log and it looks like this:
Your Plasma Torpedo - Heavy III deals 120813 (85220) Kinetic Damage(Critical) to Klingon BortaS blr Battleship.
So, 120k is what showed up on the screen when the torpedo hit, but what does the 85220 in parentheses mean? Is that the damage that was resisted/negated (So the actual torpedo would've done over 200k to a target with no shields/resistance?) or something else entirely?
A normie goes "Oh, what's this?"
An otaku goes "UwU, what's this?"
A furry goes "OwO, what's this?"
A werewolf goes "Awoo, what's this?"
"It's nothing personal, I just don't feel like I've gotten to know a person until I've sniffed their crotch." "We said 'no' to Mr. Curiosity. We're not home. Curiosity is not welcome, it is not to be invited in. Curiosity...is bad. It gets you in trouble, it gets you killed, and more importantly...it makes you poor!"
Passion and Serenity are one.
I gain power by understanding both.
In the chaos of their battle, I bring order.
I am a shadow, darkness born from light.
The Force is united within me.
I have the happen in game when I ask a question. Someone will give me an answer, I'll say "thanks!", and then someone else will give the opposite answer.
I thought the wiki would have a section on this, but if so I can't find it. Now I'm wondering what the answer is, too. I haven't paid much attention to the combat log yet. I spend most of my time trying to figure out what the microscopic debuff icons mean.

@echatty is referring to the sum up of the combat log reader third party tool which would display the damage per second dealt within the parenthesis in its default settings.
I can highly recommend to get it as it will put everything the build in combat log from the game recorded into context giving you a massive insight as to what has been going on in the previous fights. Without it the numbers have not much use for us players. The damage and DPS are only the tip of the iceberg by the way. Heals, damage taken, criticals, who in team did what, what on your ship did what... can all of sudden be seen and is beginning to make sense.
