Review Dedication class for new support pilot cruiser:

captainperkinscaptainperkins Member Posts: 379 Arc User
Here is my fav ship concept I would drop coin on. Looking for your opinions.

Here are some possible ship ideas to justify her creation:

- Brand new Phaser Technology. Instead of phaser array strips. We go back to retractable phaser ball turrets (these are better kept safe in war times especially with the new hull materials and shielding) The phaser mound turrets rise and they fire "Punch Beams". These are dense very bright flashy phaser beams which streak through space and as soon as they hit the enemy the beam sparkles away in to particles that lose cohesion. It's not that different from a lightning strike but perfectly focused in to a beam. The colors of these beams would be a deep reddish orange (yet still very bright and glowy) and a fleet variation could be classic federation blue.

Some other abilities this class would have:

    - Advanced transwarp including quadrant access and similar map to Excelsior.
    - Pilot ability Loop-D-Loop where while the ship does a full loop, she fires all of her PUNCH phasers (Pulsed Nadeon Cohesion Burst array) < See weapon description in post above.
-Photon torpedoes look like the Motion picture torpedoes with streaking energy beams streaming off of each torpedo. This is just a nostalgic callback that will suit the ship and attract gamers to the uniqueness)
    - Also pls make a unique bridge reminiscent of the first 6 movies and new red tunic and updated star trek 2 admiral uniform...

Wasn't this design one of the contenders of TNEC?

    Agreed. This is FCT territory.

Wow things got a bit more strict around here. General discussion can't include a talk about giving this cruiser class a second look? That seems redundant to me. I wasn't aware of FCT. This was an official entry for an official contest it made it to second place AND Cryptic owns the rights to the design as the rules were we hand our design and all rights with out promise of compensation to Cryptic by submitting our entry. This ship is owned by Cryptic already. Just guaging how many like it. I think it's a nice step toward the future Drexler Universe class. More robust proportions. i love it. Sorry its a tough room.

Strict for a very good reason. The Oddy contest caused a storm the Dev's didn't want to have to go through again, so they nixed any future ones and made it an FCT.

Not your fault, this forum has some pretty ridiculous rules.

Totally not your fault - I just found out this was "FCT" as well because of your post, which is honestly, as @seaofsorrows said, pretty ridiculous. What bothers (and somewhat intrigues) me more is that I've seen a lot of fellow forum posters just jump and either spam "FCT! FCT!" or right out start tagging moderators whenever they see something that would even remotely qualify. What possible point or joy is there to be had out of something like that, I will never understand. *shrugs*

Anyway, this is a design that I would love to spend money on (regardless of specs), but that is also redundant since I've already said that many many times a long time ago.

It isn't ridiculous though. Ships from other games, books, fan-made and unofficial videos are numerous, and there would be an absolute glut of requests (and there is a good handful a year that get 'requested' regardless) if there wasn't an FCT ban on this. Add to that the legal hoops that have to be jumped through just to get such as request granted so as not to be hit with an expensive lawsuit even if the ship is merely somewhere in the obscure parts of the net. It just isn't worth that hassle, especially, as I said earlier, as the fan-base can be horrifically toxic to designs that they don't like, or they think 'should have won hands-down' as observed by the Oddy contest.

If posts aren't shut down that are FCT, then they just go on and on, and become unconstructive whinge-fests.

They'll never do it because they'd have to BUY the rights to use the design now that you've made them fully aware of it by posting it here. Cryptic HAS done that for a couple of ship designs (the Luna Class 'U.S.S. Titan' for example) - but that was because of the fact that the design was used as Trek licensed Novel cover art <--- But not licensed for anything else so Cryptic had to make a direct license deal with the ship designer and that cost them extra $$).

I doubt they'd bother for a fan design like this as there's no built in fan demand for it and they have their own internal ship design team of two

I'll shorten the pilons a bit, and modify the bussard collectors, with that, it would look like a 2410 version of the T6 connie..

Frequently created threads, or more accurately subjects that people create threads for so often that Cryptic banned creating anymore

Interesting though is that the Chimera Class was also an entry in this contest and was made as well. So there are technically 2 fan made ships in the game.

I think three actually. Pretty sure the Avenger was also one. All entries into the Design the Next Enterprise became Cryptic property I believe.

The Avenger wasn't as far as I can tell, but the command ship line we got was based on an entry

It is a rather nice looking design, the long elegantly narrow pylons give it a Centaur-like look, like it is a heavier stablemate from the same design line despite the different saucer style.

As for the phasers, the strips are no more vulnerable than turrets would be since the TNG era hulls are so thin and depend heavily on shields and SIF generators for protection, and the strips can track faster than a heavier turret could.

Unfortunately, like everyone else has said, third party ships have zero chance of entering the game unless CBS arranges it like they did for the Sommerville.

IIRC, the nacelle design was inspired by Cryptic original art? The Cerberus-class Escort, I think it was? That was a point in its favor early in the Design the Next Enterprise contest. These nacelles are certainly larger and longer than on Cerberus. But then the design concept suggests something of larger scale. Not unlike that of the winning Odyssey class design.

I do think the design should appear in the game at some point. Any mechanical build is purely for fun speculation. Which, I thought, was common topic in these forums.

*Cough* It was their OWN contest (they partnered with intel on it too) initially supported by STO fans that went south fast when said fans didn't like the outcome. (And one of the main reason they started the "No Fan ships" policy after said contest) *Cough*

I remember that I started playing STO in Nov 2011. So the contest was already done a while back and the Oddy was not yet in the game until February or March of 2012.

When I didn't play STO yet but saw the first concepts of the Ent-F I really didn't like it. It was like a step back in design. The Ent-E was smaller and sleeker than her predecessor, but her successor goes to bigger and obese again.

I still don't like the original Oddy that much... When the T6-versions were added, some of the possible combinations were really cool tho because you can make it less like a fat Sovy and more like its own big-frikkin ship.

This is not a fan fiction design.

The Dedication class was second place to the Odyssey.

Everyone who submitted their entry signed away their rights. The ship design you see in my original post is OWNED by Cryptic, lock stock and barrel.

They can publish it in the game if they want. I would drop money on it and suggest we bring Shatner in (using official channels) to do a Kirk mission with this ship. Sort of a final visit to the first 6 movie eras. New Red Tunic admiral style, update the wrath of khan hand phasers to shoot those 3 pulse beams on first setting keeping the 4 small beams on second setting. And light enemies on fire with setting 2 while setting 1 vaporizes. Special ship abilities above. Movie era bridges we can use on excelsior and other movie era ships. Make this truly a DEDICATION. There is a fan base for it!
