I don't think they actually load much if any slower, that almost cartoon level loading screen it has does seem to drag more out of visual boredom though.
Nope, definitely confirmed at least half as fast almost every time. Listen to the music while you go from the select screen until the time it is loaded completely and the music stops. I hear much more of the theme in AoY mode.
just for giggles, I tested several toons. i started the stopwatch when i double clicked the toon and they start beam out from the selection screen, stopped when they appeared on the screen.
it's clear to me it's not the type, but 1. a fresh load of STO vs just changing characters,
and probably the connection refresh when you select the character my aoy was the first load from start and 30s, but then changed back to her after the others 8s..

I think its just an illusion. The main difference between the load screen of a TOS and a normal is that the normal actually has a number display that shows load progression. The TOS only has the bar on the bottom of the viewscreen. I think DSC characters also have that.
This is really just a curiosity, as the most I usually wait from hitting "play" to the character on-screen is under 10 seconds for non-AOY and often in 3-5sec after the first load (my IP is difficult to match so I am spoiled), but it most definitely is not an illusion. It is likely more noticeable because the others are so fast by comparison.
As I said, I'm going by the mount of theme music I hear which is a set value each time. I do not "reach" the faster theme at all, usually, with non-AOY toons but do so routinely with my AOY.
However, as pointed out above, it is much more significant on the first load of that toon for the "day."

Wow! I'm an expat living in a 3rd world banana republic. My experience is more like, Hit Play and then go get a cup of coffee. And at that I live in the capital city, with the best infrastructure in the country.
(On the up side, regional pricing means we can buy games on Steam for about 20% of what they cost in the USA.)
