I tried to change characters and got logged out. Wouldn't let me back in so closed down and I cannot get the launcher to auth my account via ARC or via programme files and the sto.exe

Yep, same here - on their support site they have a small message stating they of aware of intermittent connection issues, so they'll either get someone up to bounce teh account servers tonight, or not.

I'm having this same problem as well. been trying to log in for a while now. thought maybe my password was wrong but guess it wasn't. hope this gets fixed soon. was kind of wanting to play tonight, but guess that's not happening now.
Not making me a happy camper with all this server not working. How about we fire the server, retire the furry powering it, and get a good network setup and power server?
Finally got an update on the launcher after 6 HOURS that they "are aware of the issues and are investigating." Guess the hamster died... again...
How many have they gone through all these years now?

Yes this seems to happen at least once or twice every night when I am on. What is the point of all these maintenance cycles if we're still having problems with server?
I was not having this problem before and when I did it was rare. Not tonight, I got Unable to authenticate: Connection to the account server timed out. Please fix this Cryptic and extend this dilithium weekend. Thanks.

Because it's not the STO game server per se; it's the account authentication for ALL Cryptic games (and is overseen and run by a different group in the company). Right now, the problem exists for players of all Cryptic games - STO, Neverwinter and Champions Online.
If you're in and don't switch characters, you're fine as the STO gameserver is up and running. It's only if you try switch characters, or log out and log back in that your screwed ATM because the account authentication server has issues..

I've been fine till late this morning now I too cannot login due to server timeout. Why don't they get off their slack arses and fix this!!? Not to mention all the big game bugs that seem to becoming more numerous by the week. An increasing number of people I was teaming with for STO & using Discord comms Have stated that they've had enough & as much as they have enjoyed the game as long time players they're refusing to play anymore till Cryptic fixes all the problems with the game. I have a lifetime membership & have been playing since 2013 but if things don't improve soon I'm done. I don't care about new shiny ships, etc if the game is basically stuffed.
was in game then....BAM!! auto log out, "Unable to authenticate: Connection to the account server timed out" cant log back in. went to play other online games and back to check to see if it works...my other online games work fine, no lag so cant be connection issue. still not able to log in...if only I had a different account like the poster above lolz
I have been unable to get in after trying to switch characters to continue dilithium grinding some rich mining claims away.

I am of agreement with the above post, they better fix this.
And they better extend this dilithium weekend. Many people regard bonus dilithium weekend to be on par with upgrade weekend, or even as more important because of how 'EVERYTHING' in this game requires dilithium, it's the games minerals.
And I've seen people quit and never return to games that had events like this and connectivity fails like this with such bad timing.
And I get in just as i'm posting this, so not logging out or switching toons now.
Thinking of ideas from lots of games for, dunno how long now.
I was able to login briefly tonight. However there was major lagging & disconnects from server.
Now this same message is showing up when attempting to re-login.
This is a SERVER side issue as I have recently just changed ISPs.

Logging into Arc worked; but that did not recognized STO as even installed.
