too many buffs, debuffs, heals and damage powers will do that...there's like 500 unique powers ingame, all with their own unique FX and icon, and when dozens of that mass gets applied to an enemy all at once, you can't tell WHAT is effecting it anymore...ESO doesn't have this problem, because they have unified buff and debuff categories for most major things (i.e, resist buffing/weakening, movement speed buffing/weakening, magical/physical damage buffing/weakening, penetration buffing/ weakening and so on, in two forms - minor and major

while ESO has lots of different abilities across...six classes now, i think? they ALL apply the exact same buff/debuff depending on what it's supposed to do instead of applying its own unique modifier like powers do here - not only does that help keep the UI (and screen) tidy, it also helps with balancing, because you only need change a few values if a certain buff/debuff combo is overperforming instead of potentially dozens
Like special weapons from other Star Trek games? Wondering if they can be replicated in STO even a little bit? Check this out: https://forum.arcgames.com/startrekonline/discussion/1262277/a-mostly-comprehensive-guide-to-star-trek-videogame-special-weapons-and-their-sto-equivalents

    #LegalizeAwoo

A normie goes "Oh, what's this?"
An otaku goes "UwU, what's this?"
A furry goes "OwO, what's this?"
A werewolf goes "Awoo, what's this?"

"It's nothing personal, I just don't feel like I've gotten to know a person until I've sniffed their crotch."
"We said 'no' to Mr. Curiosity. We're not home. Curiosity is not welcome, it is not to be invited in. Curiosity...is bad. It gets you in trouble, it gets you killed, and more importantly...it makes you poor!"
    Passion and Serenity are one.
I gain power by understanding both.
In the chaos of their battle, I bring order.
I am a shadow, darkness born from light.
The Force is united within me.

Somewhat random interjection, but since the main thing of interest seems to be the advanced beams and their place in the beam/cannon balance, I'll put in an idea or 2.

    1) FaW uptime... put it on par with CSV at 30s/15s minimum rather than 30s/20s.

    2) FaW takes the Acc and Dmg penalties it has now, but ups the number of shots per firing cycle with rank (5/6/7). Or less/no Dmg penalty with rank, or improvements to weapon power cost with rank (10/15/20%)

It'd be hard to balance any changes, but that's what QA/QC is for.

Visual spam doesn't make any game prettier, it just bombards the eyes and brain so that it detracts from what gameplay there is on screen. Granted nothing in STO requires fast twitch shooter style reactions but it'd be nice to actually see an enemy during group activities.
I agree. The sea of flashy colors serves no useful purpose, instead it hides the things people would actually want to see.
It's actually information about what your allies and the enemies are doing. that enemy has s green glow effect? Oh it's ally used Hazard emitter on it...
    1. Too much information that all blends together into an indecipherable mess.
    2. Much of it so undocumented players won't know what it means even when they can see it.
    3. Also much of it completely unwanted.

    = serves no useful purpose.
1: only if you don't know what it is.
2: Each effect is unique, so it's as simple as recognizing one you've seen before.
3: by who? I like being able to see what my team mates are doing.

Even if you know what they are, when they all blend together into a mess its impossible to tell them apart.
2: Each effect is unique, so it's as simple as recognizing one you've seen before.
Which is pointless, if you still don't know what it does.
3: by who? I like being able to see what my team mates are doing.
I don't. And given the prevalence of the "tone down the FX spam" -threads, neither do many others.

I would say most people don't see it as a problem.

It's still information overload for me, even if I do know what it all means.
