What's the best way to install on Linux?

Former player here considering returning, to catch up with old friends, though it won't be the same without the Foundry. I've heard that STO works OK on Linux via Wine or similar middle-man programs. But what's the best way to go about installing STO on a Linux machine? Install the usual way and then sort things out, or install via PlayonLinux or some such, or what? Or put it this way, which ways have and haven't worked when you tried them? The distribution I'm using is Zorin 12, a variant of Ubuntu Xenial Xerus, if it matters.
