Possible anti Hurq tactic (ground)

Will dragons (fire breathing) be good for air support ops against the Hurq?

Any flying dragon would be good air support against anything short of Elementals.

Unless we're talking Battletech Elementals, then they're still effective.

I dunno, when you have weapons at least as advanced as man-portable machine guns and antimateriel rifles, dragons aren't that intimidating.

Well... if we consider how much firepower it took to take down a Dragon in GATE... it took basically an RPG to cause damage to it. Even the equivelent of an M2 seemed to not have any effect.

AA guns on vehicles were able to shoot down wyverns though, but they are a lot smaller.

I dunno what GATE is, but I suspect that was just writers being writers. If a dragon is hit by an anti-material round, one of two things is going to happen:

    1. The bullet will penetrate its hide, likely breaking into fragments and wrecking everything in its path.
    2. The bullet will be stopped by armor, in which case sufficient kinetic energy to puncture vehicle armor will be transferred through the armor into the dragon's flesh, causing massive internal damage.

Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to go be arrested for the dubious google searches it took to try to find out how bullets impact armor and the sort of damage they can do.

GATE is a manga and anime where the JSDF responds to an attack and sends forces through a gate to another world. Its basically Modern Military vs Medieval Fantasy.

Yeah, definitely writers being writers. Though as I understand it, if there's one military that would have trouble dealing with fantasy monsters, it's them (The JSDF is notoriously poorly trained and run).

why would it cause "massive" internal damage? seems more like it'd just annoy the dragon.

Yeah, and that movement is still pretty damaging. Bulletproof vests stop a bullet from killing you, but they still cause potentially dangerous injuries. Broken ribs, organ damage, etc. And these are tiny 9 mm handgun rounds. Compare those to the big .50 cal rounds which are potentially being delivered at a rate of about ~450/minute.

it really shouldn't be, hippos, gorram hippos, are rather resistant to gunfire even high power rifles and elephant gun aren't called that because they have cute designs on them. depending on just how a dragons physiology it could easily range from with a little luck and enough shots a normal everyday hunting rifle can do the job to if your not carrying something designed to destroy tanks don't even bother trying.

if I stop posting it doesn't make you right it. just means I don't have enough rum to continue interacting with you.

Let's be clear, the kinetic energy from a bullet doesn't get transferred in a straight line through armour. It will transfer into the armour and from there into the target along the entire surface area of the armour. That's why British Army body armour contains one large ceramic plate across the entire torso - it transfers the energy over the entire torso rather than into one specific area, which means the entire area takes a small amount of energy rather than one area (say, your spleen) taking massive kinetic damage. It's the difference between a well-bruised torso and a ruptured organ. One is painful, the other could kill you. It's all about surface area. If a dragon's scale is large enough, the energy from the bullet won't cause much damage.

(I can't believe I'm discussing the anatomy of a fantasy creature - on a Star Trek forum no less! :P )

Meh, who needs dragons when you have spaceships capable of reducing inhabited planets to smoking cinders in short order?

a dragon air force would be epic, throw in a few giants on mammoths and you have a winner

"The meaning of victory is not to merely defeat your enemy but to destroy him, to completely eradicate him from living memory, to leave no remnant of his endeavours, to crush utterly his achievement and remove from all record his every trace of existence. From that defeat no enemy can ever recover. That is the meaning of victory."
