Entirely based on having a target last more than 4 seconds....will this be totally useless in pve content? Does it count as selecting a target or actively firing on target? hmmm what do you guys think?
At last, there is a specialization which will help the enemies. While you were shooting down everything in 1 or 2 seconds in the past, now there is a reason to let your enemy be alive for 4 seconds - so that you can get a significant Boff cooldown reduction.
However, especially on ground, where many enemies die per one-hit, it will be difficult to let them be alive for 4 seconds.
I am looking forward for more information. But, with the available information at hand, I cannot see any possible reason to switch to this new specialization, to be honest. The best thing which I can see is that we have now a secondary specialization coming that does not require us to switch all the time based on the location, in other words, helps you both, in space and on ground.
It is very annoying, for example on the colony fleet holding, just before a simulation is starting, to recognize that you forgot again to switch to the Command specialization and you are still running the Strategist specialization as secondary. I never understood completely the reason why we have a secondary specialization which only helps you if you are either in space or on ground. And, thus, you need to switch all the time the secondary specialization depending whether you play a space or ground queue.
I can see it being a challenge for elite players to figure out a way to effectively use this antagonist mechanic. Will the buffs/debuffs be applicable to other targets after they have activated, for example if you select another target after the four seconds, are they cancelled? It looks like they only apply to the one target.
I can see this being as useless as focused assault. Or it could be used in a niche build, where you have to be stealthy and get enough time to pass on your target before unleashing a mighty alpha strike!
There are plenty of enemies that last for more than four seconds. To me it seems that this will make it even easier to select a Tactical cube in ISA and not worry about the spheres around you while you damage those with FAW. Or scatter volley even.
It's more boosts for doing something everyone was already doing: having a primary target. So it's basically free boosts, with the only cost being the opportunity costs related to swapping out another secondary specialisation.
Not every new piece of equipment or every new skill, trait, or item has to be useful for every endgame player. Nor do they have to be an upgrade from all existing things.
While I don't necessarily see much use in it as it is currently described, I can see where it might be useful to newer players, players still leveling alts, new alts that don't have epic gear, or even folks who like to do challenge runs on higher difficulty with level-capped gear.
Niche items for specialty builds, rather than overpowered items for generic builds, may be one way to reduce power creep which keeps demanding more, more, more.
Except for a handful of "bosses" the game mostly consists of throwing wave after wave of trash mobs at us, the spec seems kinda besides the point.
It's a neat idea but we're petty but really dosen't go well with the current state of the game.
Entirely based on having a target last more than 4 seconds....will this be totally useless in pve content? Does it count as selecting a target or actively firing on target? hmmm what do you guys think?
Well depends on what part of the population you mean, there are some players in the population that do not kill things as fast as the higher end players. Now with this addition of a spec even a secondary one, which is better used on enemies that last longer, maybe we might see a shift in pve design even.
I kinda do not like the idea of the needing to be targeting a target for 4 seconds to choose the antagonist target, mostly as it makes for the issue that the stronger you get the more this spec would weaken. To me there should be either a different method of choosing the antagonist target, such as maybe ability gained further in the tree that marks the target, or even that certain boff/module abilities will automatically make the target the antagonist target, though even having it applied randomly with a marker overlay to show who is your antagonist is. We even have a system to set a focus target, so if the antagonist mechanic were tied to the if you have a enemy set as your focus target might work.

For a vaper? Yea. Its useless. But for people who DON'T vaporize everything in a single hit? Yea... it can be useful.
And this might be more useful for single target builds rather than BFAW spam. So for low-mid range damage output this may very well affect the Meta. But for HIGH end... not so much.
Feels like an April Fools day thing to me. Getting increased boons against a target that you're supposed to keep alive longer, LOL, that feels like cruel joke to me (cruel on those who fell for this); especially when it's announced to come in just a few weeks -- um, say, around April 1st?! :P

If this was a joke... it would be more off the wall like the Artisinal Sound System or Playable Horta.
I don't think this Spec tree is for TOP end DPSers. Low-mid range would actually benefit from it.

They have before.
When, exactly? Off the top of my head, the last 3 were announced right on April 1st.
This is an MMO, not a Star Trek episode simulator. That would make for a terrible game.
So no one else see this as benefitting a Sci Vessel/Sci Captain then? I'm very intrigued.

Definitely not. They don't do April Fool's jokes this far out.
I have to admit, it's wee elaborate for an April Fools day joke (along with spec icons having been made for the occassion), but I still wouldn't put it past them.
P.S. If it *does* turn out to be a joke, then the cynic in me is bound to say this much time invested was better spent on, oh, say, adding Traits to the loadouts. But I won't be Negative Nancy, and spoil the fun.
they will add a new mechanic to the game to prevent vapping... max you can do is 10% dmg to target in a sec. see mobs last for 10 secs at a min. Value to this spec right here. Also alleviates the pressure to fly max dps build...

I don't see how there's any reason to think this is an April Fool's joke. Because of the 4-second antagonist mechanic? It's way too elaborate to be a joke, and it seems like something that would be actual game content, unlike some of the past jokes.

The people who basically melt most enemies in the game mostly see this as an useless specialization if it doesn't benefit them. As others have said, this seems to be geared towards players whom aren't necessarily getting very high DPS numbers or have optimal builds.

Hmm.....the problem with this idea: most folks who are not doing the maxing upgrades thing often don't bother filling any Specialization trees.

As long as I can be a Detective Chief Inspector this would be OK.
Constables are in LOTRO not here. We don't need another bloody Specialization this soon.

That would certainly be a fool's joke.
