Beams are the path of least resistance; thus people will flock to using them. They are not the only option, just the easiest to use.
I do think the devs are partly to blame because of how much of a spam-fest the game currently is. Having weapons with such a wide coverage area helps tremendously when hordes of targets are warping in at you from every angle.
With that said, you can still be extremely deadly with other options - as my exotic/plasma (torpedo-)bomber was happy to remind me when I dusted it off again.
Yeah, this was a bait thread. 2 full pages of replies and the original poster isn't one of them. Whatever their argument it's been dashed rather handily anyway, and with no clear interest in defending it it's suspect they even cared to begin with.
You guys (people on this thread griping or pi ing for the old FAW meta) are blaming the wrong people. Balancing wouldn't have been a prob without the cash grab of the upgrade system. If not for that, people would have simply switched mods out to fit the new meta, and moved on. Now every fit requires significant investment in specific modules and weapons. Balancing changes now invalidate sitnificant prior time and money investments. Why my playtime is way down.
