2011, around the release of Season 4 aka Crossfire. I got a boxed STO silver edition with a poster display of the - now outdated - sector space and a little silver Starfleet pin

I started playing the day F2P started and I remember very much doing the odyssey mission to get that free one and then my level 15 character spent 2 hours trying to figure out how to open the box and use the ship which I couldn't until I got to level 40 or 50. I also remember running around the original ESD.
After getting burned with how Earth and Beyond was handled(RIP Westwood Studios), I was a bit dubious about jumping onboard another game that seemed similar - including the dicey development/publisher situation. Was super-hyped about it before that drama started to go down.
When it went Free to Play, I decided to give it a chance. Glad I did; what I found was an awesome amalgamation of my previous Star Trek Game loves: Starfleet Command and Starship Creator. It also had a starship control I hadn't enjoyed since those days of EnB(which STO could STILL learn a few things from - mining, space-fairing lifeforms, exploration, interesting space map 'terrain', etc.). The Icing on the cake was just how beautiful the Free-to-Play system was with no paywalls. Granted, Lockboxes were a pretty bumpy ride when they were first added.
That said, I've certainly had my ups and downs with the game. Took my first break around when the fleet system was added. Playable Undine ships really broke my respect and immersion with the game; been a continual downslide of disappointment ever since. Delta Rising.. well.. the 17x less things I say about it, the better. These days, I just look at the game like a virtual Star Trek Theme Park, and I've been able to enjoy my time with it again for the soulless experience that it is. Even threw some money at them again during the summer sale/infinity box because I've been enjoying the game enough to justify it.
Bought the game brand new, stopped playing after the purchase time was up because I was hugely disappointed to find the game is largely instance based... Came back to see if the game's improved any... Not sure I'll be here long because everything's pay-to-not-spend-literal-thousands-of-hours-grinding...
The game hasn't improved at all from what I can see... I was deeply saddened by this title not having open universe exploration/missions and instead being largely comprised of instances with a main overworld map for traveling. I was hoping for something truly immersive and featuring an open galaxy setup kind of like what Starmade has. This game has not delivered on that hope. Truly sad considering I'm a big Trekky.
Despite how bad this game is I will probably still play through to enjoy what story there is...

Nice! What a good poll for a change. Hope Geko reads how many started playing over the best expansion ever.
I came back over the best expansion ever (after quitting over the singularity of stupid that was outfit map restriction during the summer event that year)...does that count?
Around April of 2012 I think. I know I thought to give the game a chance when it went free to play. While I have a few breaks here and there I come back.

I started back during the betas. I was hooked from the start, got my collector's edition and started my main character as soon as official access began. I took a hiatus about 2 years after launch after a glitch emptied my entire ship inventory. I lost all of my rep gear and things that I had worked since launch for, it took away my drive to play. About 3 years ago I picked the game back up and put in the work to get back to where I was, went for the LTS and I've been enjoying myself ever since.
stopped playing when the game went f2p for a long time . i knew what was coming lockboxes etc etc . but being a star trek fan the draw to come back has allways been there . so here i am . nooby veteran lol
I started playing, literally a few days before PWE took over and ppl were discussing whether it should still be called the 'C-Store.'
It's not like that discussion ever really stopped. There's still people coming with the "Z-store" no matter how Branflakes officially disputed that. I'm so old...

Well... the button is labeled Z Store... so.....
At this point, Z-Store actually makes more sense.
N.B.. I bet Zen comes from Zeni, meaning 'money' in Japanese. I took half-a-year of Japanese classes once, and I remember this old proverb: "Kono yo wa zeni" (loosely translated, 'this world is all about money'). I don't speak Chinese, but I wouldn't be surprised if Zeni is known for a similar meaning in China too.

I started at that time too. When I asked what is the best ship currently everyone told me that the Dyson Science Destroyer is the trend.
