    Humans Are Special

The idea that there's something special about humanity that elevates them above all the other species. Frequently, humanity is a central, if not THE central, species in the galactic community, oft-times actually FOUNDING said galactic community. I know that scifi is written by humans for humans, so naturally we make ourselves out to be better, but I'd love to have a fiction where we are the new kids on the block in a pre-existing and well-functioning community and are just like every other galactic community member species. Put us out on the periphery. Make us earn the respect of our galactic peers. Make us not special.

That sounds awfully boring if you ask me.

Well it's a lot more probable an outcome than the "Humans are special snowflakes who are the best at everything" thing...
Space Barbie Extraordinaire. Got a question about Space Barbie? Just ask.

    Things I want in STO:

    1) More character customization options such as more clothing options, letting the toon complexion affect the entire body, not just the head. Also a true RGB color picker applied to all costume and appearance options, which would allow for true appearance customization and homogenous colors instead of "this same exact color looks vastly different on two different pieces."
    2) Bridge customization, not bridge packs. Let us pick a general layout and adjust the color palette, console appearance, and chair types, as well as more ready room layout options.
    3) Customizable ground weapons, i.e. The aesthetic look of phaser dual pistols but they shoot antiproton bolts. For obvious reasons this would only apply to standard ground weapons.
    4) For the love of Q please revamp Plasma Ground Weapons. They look like demented Supersoakers right now.
    5) True Vanity Impulse and Deflector effects similar to Vanity Shields.
    6) A greater payout for hitting T6 Reputations. Currently it takes more time and resources to get from T5 to T6 than it does to get from nothing to T5. Make that grind really pay out at the end.
    7) Mirrorverse Refugee event similar to AoY/Delta/Gamma, complete with new Mirrorverse recruits for all factions.
    8) Independent Faction, because yo ho yo ho a pirate's life for me!

Except it's not. We're bloody amazing. Less than a century between first flight and landing on the moon. The ability to wipe out entire orders of viruses on a global scale. The accurate mapping of the exact size, shape, and eventual future of the Universe. Early development of concepts like cold fusion mere decades after the introduction of modern particle physics. Global satellite nets interconnecting the entire planet a handful of years after the launch of the very first satellite.

We're bloody amazing at everything we do. To expect us to be worse than a hypothetical alien race is to expect them to work exponentially quicker than we do for no good reason.

    Stop underselling Humans.

You're assuming that other species didn't advance on a similar scale, something you cannot do as we don't have any data on the technological progress of any extraterrestrial society. I'm not underselling humanity or saying that we're worse. I agree that we are amazing as a species. However, to blindly assume that we can enter galactic politics, take a front seat, and dictate galactic policy to those that have been there longer and have done more is ludicrous at best. If you get hired on at a company, do you think you can go into a board meeting and say "This is what we need to do," then expect them to do it? You'll get laughed out of the boardroom and then fired.

I disagree entirely. For all anyone knows, humans are the most advanced species in the universe. Not everyone shares your negative view of humanity.

I don't have a negative view of humanity. I have a realistic view of how humanity should comport itself when entering a preexisting galactic society.

That's their problem. There's no reason to assume we wouldn't be much better at it than they are. There's no reason to assume we're not prodigies or that an outside perspective wouldn't be better than what's there.

I disagree entirely. For all anyone knows, humans are the most advanced species in the universe.
Dr. David Brin holds this as one of the most depressing explanations for the Great Silence - that we are the Elder Race, the most advanced species to survive this long, with all the solitude and responsibilities to younger races that implies.

Meanwhile, on topic - Primitive Means Stupid. There seems to be a memetic complex in our stories, dating back centuries at the very least, that insists that anyone who's "primitive" - that is, at a less advanced technological and sociological level of development than our protagonist - is there only because they're too dumb to understand anything more advanced. This came up in conversation around here earlier today, as my roommate (an Iraq War veteran) was marveling at his memory of how quickly local workers were able to construct a fairly complex fencing system around a new forward base, starting with chicken wire and other basic supplies. As his wife and I pointed out, the people of Iraq are resource-limited, not stupid. Their cultural growth was disrupted by the British division of their country (and other historical reasons, some relatively recent, but going into those is beyond the scope of this discussion), and their country is fairly resource-poor in that area, but the people who live there aren't living in a low-tech environment due to an inability to understand complexity.

By extension, "primitive" aliens may be quite intelligent, just not equipped with abundant natural resources. For instance, in James White's Sector General stories, the Cinrusskin (classification GLNO) come from a world larger than Earth, but very poor in metals. The surface gravity is about 1/4g, while the atmosphere is about as dense as ours, enabling the local sapients to fly - they resemble oversized spiders with butterfly-like wings, and must wear gravity nullifiers on most floors of Sector General - but preventing them from developing space flight before the Monitor Corps made first contact. They are, however, highly intelligent and likeable beings, and are also empaths, making them in high demand in the multispecies surgical suites at Sector General (it might not be apparent to, say, a Human or Tralthan when a Hudlar is regaining consciousness because the anaesthetic is wearing off, but a Cinrusskin would be able to feel the increased emotional radiation - and given that the surface pull on the Hudlar homeworld is over 4g, you don't want one of them waking up in pain anywhere near you...).

On the other hand, there's the Kazon, who somehow became warp-capable without ever figuring out that you can mine water from asteroids and comets.

How do they operate them? Repair them? Replace them? Fuel them?

We're supposed to believe they can use those ships without having any knowledge of basic science?

they managed to blow themselves up asking for a glass of water... I wouldn't doubt anything.

and they only had had them for a couple decades it is possible, if unlikely they knew just enough to fly and patch the hull but basically nothing else. more so if they kept some trabe around to do the things they didn't know and the trabe were smart enough not to teach them anything.

Perhaps they taught themselves, using existing manuals that were probably in the ship's databases when they stole them?

    Winning.
It's what I do. It's what I just did. It's what I'm about to do again. It's being undisputed emperor of an empire that cannot be disproved as the most powerful intergalactic empire in the entire universe; I always win, and everything I've won will definitely be won again... by me. It's my signature move, and thus, it's my signature. Problem, Sonic? Yeah, I mean you, Sonic, because you're being beat up, despite your being super. You can't even hit Shadow back, can you? Nope, he's too strong for you. Of course, I'm not Shadow, I'm the Super Emerald fueled fox that's pulling the strings; trust me, the fight would only be a few frames long if I were in it personally. Oh, and here's something for all you guys thinking you can win Last Post Wins 3.0; trust me, I'll be around a long while after the sun has already consumed the Earth while I sit out with the forum servers on Titan. Yes, I mean Titan... that comparatively little moon orbiting Saturn. It's a nice little place in a version of our solar system where the sun is a lot bigger. I mean, Mars will last longer than your precious Earth, but by then, it'll be one hot planet... and I figure Saturn's moon will be about the right temperate for a super-powered warlord. Oh, and trust me, I packed a lot of rings, and I mean a lot. Trillions, in fact, so I'll never run out of rings to power my super form. Besides, if I start to run out, I can just chaos control more rings into my reach. It's quite easy, really. You should try it. Granted, you'll never have the 7 Super Emeralds that I have in my possession, nor the Master Emerald that I've got hidden away somewhere... absorbed into my body thanks to Sonic logic, but whatever. I win. Again. I'm not kidding, either. Just check Last Post Wins, and if the last post isn't mine, it soon will be. Very, very soon. You can count on it. Seriously. By the way, if you're wondering, there's a really great Super Tails sprite sheet out there... somewhere... by some guy named shadow_91. These sprites are really great. Like, really good. Quality. Just like what I like to see in a sprite sheet. Also, credit to Joe T.E., his Sonic Battle style Super Sonic sprites have a great palette for a Super Sonic being beat up by Super Shadow, who's palette is from a Super Shadow sheet of unknown origin, but it turns out they were "borrowed" from a better sheet made by a certain Domenico. Oh, and the gif is actually a custom made super version of a similar gif, of which there are only 3 or 4 copies to be found by Google, and even then, evidently of an unknown source. Yep, it's one of those things. Stuff people have made, spread around, only for it to vanish and you to be the only person who still has a copy, not even knowing where it came from... like, literally at all. Oh, and anyone notice that Shadow's little chaos snap blast thingies are red and blue now? Yeah, I changed it. Problem, fans of purple? Yeah, I know you got a problem with that one, but you can just deal with it. After all, according to all known laws of aviation, there is no way a bee should be able to fly... alright, alright, I'll spare you the entire Bee Movie script, just Google it if you want. By the way, ever wonder how your characters would've ended up if they evolved in another universe? Yeah, that. Think about it. Ok, so you probably didn't bother reading up to here, but whatever, here's a surprise for you guys over at ESD (RP) who were crazy enough to read this: Emperor Nat of the mcfreakin' Terran Empire is gonna be right all along! The universe is gonna go BOOM! *Thumbs up to the insanity*
Oh, now don't tell me you want in on all this! Well, ok. Look this that Egg Pawn hanging outside your window, pointing his laser rifle at you, waiting for my next order. He's doing his part. He helps conquer the weak-minded. He roboticizes the weak-bodied. Heck, he even helps keep the useless people from causing any trouble, but you know what? Join. Find the closest Nataran Empire roboticization center near you and join the ranks, before the ranks find you. Oh, I know, you figure it must be so satisfying to know I basically rule the world now, and you know what? It is, but do you want to know the true definition of satisfaction? Well, let me tell you a little story. One day, you see a brand new event. They're giving out boxes that give old event stuff. Your dilithium is plentiful. You buy a whole lot of Phoenix packs on your main, and open them all. You get one epic token. Then, you decide, that since you have all the Breen ships and don't give a damn about the others, you exchange it for an ultra rare, and grab yourself a Jem'Hadar Attack Ship and for the hell of it, a Voth Bulwark. You open both, leaving the Bulwark in your vast masses of starships as you jump into the bugship and deck it out, deck by deck, into the most awesome Jem'Hadar ship you can. You fly it. You enjoy it. Eventually, you get bored and leave, leaving the old Bulwark never flown... until later. Your main is long complete. Your new alt main, based off some character you pulled out of nothing just to explain away some starship being in service without the command of your dear admiral, is also complete. Mostly. Their reps and doffs are hard at work, getting you stuff. You realize the potential, and head back for your dear admiral, pull the most Voth themed build you can out of thin air, and suit up in your giant ship in the shape of you know what. You head out... and cause all sorts of havoc. Enemies scream out your name as their very life is drained away by your swarms of Aceton Assimilators. They complain to the devs of your OPness when you revive yourself from death every time you die. Do you show any form of mercy? No. After all, this isn't the United Federation of Planets, this is mother frakkin' Starfleet, where you explore strange new worlds and kick butt never kicked before. Oh, and you realize that I just wrote another speech rivaling your own signature. Cool. Oh, wait, that's just the original draft, it is part of my signature now. Oh, and yes, I am aware that I have become a Canadian Regent; one day, sooner than you'd expect, we'll suddenly decide to take over the world and declare an "alliance", and I shall become it's Regent. You know, like the Klingon-Cardassian Alliance in the mirror universe of our beloved Star Trek. Oh, who'll we be taking over with? I dunno, maybe [REDACTED], or maybe aliens from outer space. Guess you'll have to wait and find out, won't we? Until then, don't ask too many questions, or else my Breen allies on Titania might pick up on your -- [REDACTED BY BREEN CONFEDERACY FOR REASONS] Also, psst... keep an eye out for flying Tribbles! Also walls. Big, great walls, separating entire continents apart. Walls patrolled by Tribbles. Flying Tribbles. Flying Nukara Tribbles. Don't worry, it's not like they were on Venus with a herd of Tholians or anything, they just like the extreme heat and brutal weather like acid rain and hurricane force winds as the norm. Oh, and definitely keep your eye out on any two-tailed foxes, because if they ain't glowing, they're definitely an imposter. Possibly an Undine, we caught one of those once in my place once. Oh, and if you find a two-tailed fox that doesn't like the cold... most certainly ask him to say sorry. If he refuses, DESTROY HIM WITH A DOOMSDAY MACHINE, BECAUSE THERE'S NOTHING ELSE THAT WOULD BE ENOUGH AGAINST SUCH AN OVERPOWERED IMPOSTER!

tr;dr, I am winning last post wins 3.0. Thank you for your time.
    Oh, look, an explosion...

According to the story that told us about this, the Kazon had been enslaved by the Trabe to perform all their grunt work. They might well have trained Kazon to execute the basic functions needed for starship operations, without ever telling them the "why", leaving their former slaves merely following prescribed procedures ritualistically and never asking questions.

Well it's a lot more probable an outcome than the "Humans are special snowflakes who are the best at everything" thing...

I lean to the ancient alien theory regarding that one. Some of you folks don't like that idea, but it is the one that makes most sense to me.
Even scientist like Van Braun and Oberth said we had outside help.

Also, we're not THAT amazing.......the atomic bomb, chemical weapons, biological weapons, don't be putting us on a pedestal just yet. Get us off oil and coal, stop the stupid wars going on, and put folks like bankers, politicians and corporate CEO's in orange jumpsuits....THAN I'll be impressed.

Smoke, there's a link to David Brin's short story "Those Eyes" in my sig. I recommend reading it, for an example of exactly why the Ancient Aliens thing seems so silly to so many of us.

Don't really care...I know how some trekkies hate the AA theory with passion.
It's mainstream, conventional I find silly.

And considering the books like chariots of the gods and the AA tv series is going onto an 11th or 12th season, not everyone finds it silly. Van Braun and Oberth did not find what they said silly.

So I'll just be the black sheep of the trekky community, no big deal, it's nothing new.

Where they able to avoid resource conficts leading to war? Were they able to avoid pollution because they knew beforehand what the risks of their technology were and didn't use or develop any technology with harmful side effects, even if the technology was clearly an advantage for other purposes?

Did those ancient aliens also have help when developing their own technology? Is it turtles all the way down?

I don't dislike that hypothesis, I reject it based on a lack of evidence. We know exactly how and why we came across all out major discoveries and have no need for fringe babble by people who don't want to put real research into working the real answers out. It takes years of research and experiment to work out how you can align things with laser precision in a primitive era, it takes seconds to mumble 'I dunno so aliens' and thus write of any possibility that primitive does not mean stupid. I also don't see what appeals to authority on the part of Van Braun or Oberth are for. Neither of them has said they were helped by aliens or offer proof anyone else was and such they opinion is as meaningless as yours.

No. The atomic bomb is a astonishing achievement, a weapon or not, it shows a practical grasp of particle physics assembles alongside the theory. That's the ability to hit the ground running, to not only go from theory to a working model in years but to develop both at the same time?

We deserve that pedestal but I never said we were perfect, I never will say that, I'm a cynic, but to pretend out achievements don't exist because of us (despite recorded evidence saying it does) or that they don't count because some other people do bad things is insulting.

If you don't understand how certain technologies came to be, just ask. That's how science and knowledge work, you ask. Invoking gods or aliens in gaps rather than finding out what really goes there is just lazy and does hold us back.

As for the Kazon, it's perfectly possible to run complex equipment with no understanding of how or why you're doing it by running recognisable patterns. Obviously that makes it very hard to adapt to changes but with enough practice you formulate your own understanding of what you're doing even if it's not how it actually works.

They might not know what comets are made of. If they don't know how to make the ships sensors do anything that, say, avoid comets and don't do a spectral scan of the tail they probably just assume it's white rock.

It is an interesting idea, a sort of cargo cult in space, however the VGR writers did mess it up as usual. Though I don't find it inconceivable the Kazon don't know what they're doing, I do find it inconceivable the writers expect us to see them as a serious threat.
As a one off race in a two parter the idea of a space fairing race that got there through theft and mechanical procedure could really work. The Kazon do not.

This brings up an interesting point. One of the sects had plentiful water which they traded to the others. Maybe that sect actually DID know, but kept it secret to monopolize.

Ew. That kind of steampunk is so drab and it's why the genre has gotten so stale and dull. If I see another top hat with pointless gears glued to it, someone is going to get a pair of shears through an eye.
