No. It is fine and plausible.

It is called a warp core breach which basically unleashes all antimatter in the core itself plus any antimatter in storage containers that suffered damage which causes a containment breach allowing even more antimatter to react with matter.

What I dont see and maybe Im missing it is say a Borg Cube blows, I take damage but the Borg Sphere, and such dont.

Likely because the game is setup so that enemy ships do not damage each other; a.k.a "friendly fire". Similar to how one player's Gravity Well do not affect other players, only enemy ships.

Is that true? It looked to me when a ship explodes, friend and foe take damage.

We are talking about man made spaceships not natural occurrences.

BUT technically, I suppose, if a spaceship was equipped with both liquid hydrogen and liquid oxygen it could, theoretically, explode in space. But ships in this game seem to explode twice ;)

You do know that starships in in Star Trek uses antimatter right?

Do you know what happens when antimatter interacts with matter?

and not only that, most also carry additional volatile materials in the form of torpedoes - enemy weapons fire hitting a torpedo magazine would set off a very BIG explosion

maybe npc ships have "scratch the paint" pilot skill ;)
but seriously you make good point.
No, they just have a bazillion hitpoints.

It is possible to kill spheres with an exploding cube, if you use gravwell to pull the spheres right into the cube as it blows.

Guess im doing something wrong, I have it maxed in my skill points and using a lot of consoles to add to it. when I pop GW I see Stars in Stars, it sucks them in for far away but when that cube blows, they dont. Think I will record the Borg alert a few times and play it back slow to see if Im just missing it. Thanks warpangel

I suppose it's possible the spheres I've killed like that were already damaged. Never paid much attention to it. In any case, they do take damage from a cube explosion.

if the spheres still have any significant shields left, you aren't going to see much damage from a core breach because they deal kinetic damage

OP, there is some good advice previously given in this thread about not getting caught in a Warp Core Breach. So I am going to throw my 2 quatloos in as well.

    - Watch your range to the target a little more often. A lot of times players get too close. Because they get fixated on killing something right now. Tunnel vision is always fatal. Think about and work on keeping a better distance from your targets.

    - Add in some Hull and Shield heal Abilities to your tray. Brace For Impact by itself is okay, but it is really an 'Oh TRIBBLE!' Button. When I first played STO, my ship never left Space Dock without the following abilities mounted: Engineering Team I Hazard Emitters I and Science Team I. Even if I had to give up a Weapons Buff to do so. When you're dead, DPS goes to zero and the time out drops it as well.

    - Neutronium Alloy is your friend. It is fashionable to use the Engineering Slots for all the Gold Universal Consoles. Because Enineering Consoles generally, 'don't improve DPS so don't waste(?) a slot'. Again, when you're dead, DPS goes to zero and the time out drops it as well. Look at your build and see if there is an Engineering Console or two you can use to keep yourself alive more effectively. Neutronium is a good all 'rounder but there are specialized armors just like there are specialized weapon consoles.

    - Improve your Situational Awareness. he who sees, wins. It is possible some of those Warp Core Breach deaths of yours are the result of another enemy you are not seeing shooting you at the same time.

    I hope these help.
