I see it opposite.....it can happen.....you just going to have to want it to happen. Those in power WANT you to feel helpless and that it's all going to end horribly. Stop obsessing over greed, power, money....that's the first step. Also, stop worshiping governments and authority figures because of their titles. Also, think.....I see people who try to do new ways of thinking and seeing things....but won't until someone in government or media SAYS it's ok to think this or that way.
Those are the first steps....steps that most people do not want to do, because change, of any kind scares them, even if the change is good.

The Federation and Warhammer 40k Imperium requires some form of instantaneous interstellar communication and/or FTL travel. There are some science fiction stories that use FTL ships as mail courier ships due to a lack of instantaneous interstellar communication.
Without interstellar communications or FTL travel, then it is impossible for interstellar civilizations like the Federation or Warhammer 40k Imperium to exist. Each star system would be stranded and get information that is decades or centuries out of date. Then there is the possibility of temporal and dimensional civilizations. So it is possible that the maximum we can reach is a bunch of interplanetary civilizations depending on what is theoretically possible.
Meanwhile, in Pournelle's CoDominium stories there was a high-speed FTL drive (from a point in one system to a predefined point in another system, using fusion rockets at about 1g acceleration between them), but no FTL comms, meaning that the CD eventually was overthrown and subsumed by the Empire of Man (which itself fell to a secessionist movement led by the genetically-engineered "supermen" of Sauron system, then reformed centuries later as the Second Empire). The Empire was kept together by regional governors appointed by the Emperor, and messages went as fast as the quickest sloop. (In The Mote In God's Eye, Rod Blaine and Lady Sally Fowler had to hitch a ride on a message sloop that maintained 4g acceleration between Alderson jump points; it was mostly fuel tank, crewed by five young men selected for their physical fitness and recovery speed. Ordinarily Rod would have stayed aboard the Imperial battlewagon [i[Lenin[/i] pending the inquiry into the loss of his ship, the battle cruiser MacArthur, but His Imperial Majesty had requested Lord Blaine's and Lady Fowler's presence at the Palace in Serpentis system, so...)
More to the point, however, given an FTL drive along the lines of the Star Trek warp drive, particularly in conjunction with the high-speed-but-not-instantaneous communications in TOS, a representative republic like the Federation is just as probable as almost any other form of government. (An imperial fascist government would be unlikely, as the limitations on warp speeds and communications would make successful colonial revolutions too possible. Total anarchy also wouldn't work, as neighboring systems could still reach each other, so as soon as one developed another form of government it would spread, not to mention those systems that would be absorbed by the Klingon and Romulan empires. Any form that can be decentralized, however, including republics and feudal empires, could happen.) Any insistence that "humans would never be like that" is not only helplessly defeatist, it's also contradicted by many instances in our planet's own history. (See the Dominion of Canada, the United States between 1865 and 2016, Australia, et al.) It's even easier when you have a post-scarcity society, a result of replicators and cheap energy.

Feudal Empires, like those seen in the Battletech universe, where the five Successor States of the Inner Sphere exist after the collapse of the Star League. Other than when House Steiner and House Davion joined to form the Federated Commonwealth (which fractured after Katrina Steiner broke away from her brother Victor Davion), the Inner Sphere was not united and fought among themselves. It took the Clan Invasion to even get them to actually talk to each other, let alone work together.
Hell... There was still mistrust between the rival houses (Davion and Steiner units especially, and to an extent Liao). Kurita and Marik units seemed to be the most focused on the Clans.

Its likely the answer of what would be is reliant on the "flavor" of which society is popular at the time we reach the stars.

Automation and other ways of advanced manufacturing (3d printing) will eventually put most people out of work. Fusion will happen eventually (it's been 20 years away for the last 50, but it will eventually happen), providing unlimited energy. In our lifetimes, we will probably see a universal basic income to compensate for this. Some people will be richer because they actually have jobs, but most people will be well off.
Populations decline pretty much when women get rights and a country goes from being 3rd world to 1st world. So underpopulation will eventually be more of a problem than overpopulation.
