The unpopular opinion about PvE queues

Not starting a thread with the intention to complain, but something has got to give. I cannot count the number of times I have played an advanced or elite queue, only to encounter a team who had no idea what they were doing, costing marks, time, and a lot of patience. It's very obvious that these players have not taken the time to learn the queue on normal, resulting in failed objectives due to stubborn ignorance. It's gotten to the point where it's killing what little motivation I have left to play the content. What I'd like to see to fix this problem: Gear scores, or a requisite number of completions on normal, before the advanced version even becomes available. I know these aren't surefire solutions, but it's all I've got.

    Agreed. Adding small gates to Advanced and Elite would make the content more enjoyable (not for all, I know...), but for me if it will hinder people with MkX green equip to play anything but normal.

    You bring up an interesting topic OP, but also one we discussed around here often with no real conclusion.

    It should also be noted that just a few threads below this one a player kind of complained about the exact opposite. Teams that are too good for the content he would rather like to play in his own pace.

    Problem is that no solution we could come up with would work. The real trouble is the fact that close to nobody in this game is left willing to tend to engaging, teamed PvE content at all. Only a few of the extreme players are.

    He, who wants to put his 300k DPS build to the test and shows that he brings 30 times as much to a match than what is expected of him. The other extreme is he who has no business even being in a teamed environment but who wanted to stretch the boundaries of his STO experience a bit on the road to endgame.

    In all friendship, we cannot afford to sort either of them out. If we did there would simply be nobody left to play with. :|

    They are there. They just play solo missions on Elite.

    Right, I forgot!

    The fact that players can get rewards for every stone they turn in this game may be the core of the problem here. No matter how tedious the activity can get, peeps simply prefer to do just that instead of doing something a tiny bit exciting.

    I mean how is a bad pug team where single individuals could show what they are capable of supposed to compete with 2k Dil one click reward out of the admiralty system?! You don't even need a good ship build for that, just a card.

    Teamed PvE is not needed anymore in Star Trek Online, OP. Only the nerdy and ugly do it and why play with them. You are much better off stabelizing omega molecules. >:)

    Skill matters, so does experience.

    Some folks are trying to level new toons, and/or run a ship up top the top of the mastery. I did both not too long ago. ISA is a favorite (run it close to 2 thousand times) & usually there are enough really good folks to help the ill prepared ones. I did it with a Manticore using rare mk 12 gear and pulled 12k in it. The next run I was tied for the top with another player, with the rest being below us. We still did ok, but it took way longer than the usual 5 minutes.

    It would imho be a poor idea to over limit people trying to do this when level 50-to-60 and spec points take a really long time to get.

    It would annoy the 'pros' who'd go straight to Elite; but maybe make Advanced and Elites conditional in that you have to successfully run Normal X times to get Advanced unlocked, and Advanced X times to get Elite unlocked. At least then if you are in an Elite pug, you know your teammates ran the STF at least 2X times and hopefully know what to do.

    Yup, was in the Arbiter and running things just fine, then went GalX[T6] and first runs with Cmd instead of Intel powers really made me suck till I got used to the differences! :D
    Sometimes I think I play STO just to have something to complain about on the forums.

    Agreed, actual skill and experience matters. Having a high DPS doesn't equal skill, and people should remember that. It would be great if the actual themed STF's had a 'tutorial' mission in the Episodes that was unskippable and had mandatory actions that the player had to follow, that way they are forced to learn what to do for that STF. It would be a great help to all PUGs.

If you were a Klingon you'd be killed on the spot, but lucky for you.....you WERE in Starfleet. Let's see how New Zealand Penal Colony suits you." Adm A. Necheyev.

    I SYMPATHIZE with the OP on this issue..
    I have been both yelled at and done a little harsh texting in game during advanced and elite matches...

    However... It all comes down to this for me: You can organize a team of your own buds in game and play any queue on elite that you want with guaranteed results... If you take the RISK of joining a random queue then "youse takes yours chances and youse pays yours dues!"

    Just get 4 of your buds who know the mission & have epic gear & hit it hard and fast!

    @peterconnorfirst, Nice, balanced post! :)

    I don't do ground (where I think things matter more?); but in space I rarely care. I come in, blast everythig apart -- certainly on my new Rom *g* -- and hardly ever notice whether others suck or no. Battle of Procycon 5 is one area where you sometimes realize some team members suck a bit, but I just concentrate on doing my thang. And let's face it, when was the last time you were in, say, a CCA pug even that actually failed?! :)

    I remember communicating on STF, players helping others to run the STF. Miss it very much. Back then you where much closer as a team, ..

    I remember a few ques they removed that was super hard but people communicated and where is the mixing of ground snf STF runs.

    Also a lot of the STF I want to run like KAGE but it's to empty, and it's empty across the boards that I never gets around to it. To many choices and to little player base perhaps? Or they run what's easy and quick. I also don't think new toons should play elite.. I also think they should bring back that random very rare (not obtainable in rep or rnd) drop rewards they had before. Give us a reason to play these STF, other than marks. Or create some system that if you get enough accolades playing certain stfs with special objectives often enough you get access to more stf that's not accessible at first .. create a stf tree that unlocks new stfs maps and rewards. Don't create a huge list of stf and random gameplay.

    Fix Defera BZ and all other broken zones. Make them playable even if you where alone in the map or with few number. Also make the BZ feel worthwhile even you only spend 15 min there ( which in STF is 100-150 marks worth).

    The problem is also players today don't communicate or don't want to. It's to much about highest DPS and not so much with careers and their respective skills.. give a reason to run a STF as science or engineering...

    Or just join the DPS League; then you're pretty much guaranteed to play with ppl (certainly on 30K and up) who actually know the mission objectives, and have the firepower to do it properly too.

    We've all been there. And many complained about it on the forums over the years. We can either endure the frustration and others' ignorance or stop playing queues in PuGs. That's the only options we have.

    @meimeitoo

    Thank you very much.

    I bet when you do good in space you would absolutely rock on ground. I for example find it much easier. In the end it comes down to personal preference only. I suppose I'm more of a MACO at heart; if you are more of a pilot then there is nothing wrong with that really. :)

    @thestargaze

    I’m sorry about this Liz! I know that our fleet stopped a bit to support the old Borg grounds as many of us are either after salvage tech we only get in elite or want to show off our fancy ship builds.

    I should be online Saturday and Sunday afternoon. Klye and Ezria are too. Hit me up in game and we do some old fashion Borg groundsmashing if u like. B)

    In pugs, Cryptic should measure and average your DPS, done over time, and then match you with team mates of about equal strength. Of course, that requires a substantial pool of players to choose from; so, since most queues hard enough to fill up as it is these days, that ship may have sailed already.

    Yeah it's bad enough as it is even in regular and advanced when there isn't always enough people queue'n up to play STFs given the population of this game.

    Well, to risk having heavy objects thrown at me, I'd like to address the opposite end of the spectrum.

    Lots of times, when I am in one, one or more of what I call the "DPS Gods/DPS Snobs" zip in and take out said baddies before I can even get there and let out a shot, and sometimes they will have the gall to chew me out or chastise me because they took out a majority with their steroid juiced ships. Heck, in a ground run of the Elachi station elite, one of them was cussing me out for not using a TR rifle when I was using a terren disruptor rifle instead.....like I was violating some 'dress code' as it were, for ground gear. Oy, vey! X_x;

    LOL, yeah, I hear ya. :) I have, at times, played with friends (like bpharma, anyone still remember her?) who were so extremely good, by the time I arrived at the first Cube, everything was already dead. :) Yeah, this happens. Of course I wasn't cussed out. But they had invited me, as a courtesy, and didn't expect me to rule; and, for me, it was just a hilarious experience.

    Excuse me if this sounds ignorant. But if the issue is players moving into advanced and elite queues and not knowing what to do. Why not ask cryptic for an NPC that acts as the taskforce commander in normal. Who's primary job is to just tell people what to do? IE "Captains! Keep those borg from the transformer. One burst from them and we lose all the work we have done." That way the normal setting is a tutorial of sorts for the STFs?

    I would agree with the OP, people should in theory at least know the objectives before going to advanced or elite. Though some never learn - I remember one mission whose name escapes me at the moment which I used to level some rep or another and even after weeks of it being online, regularily the majority went for decoy mobs and fought with them (lengthily) although they could have been completely ignored, having nothing to do with objectives nor any bonuses.

    And I've been in the shoes of the "new toon without gear on a totally wrong ship for the mastery" guy, but then I switch back to normal if I cannot contribute properly on advanced. (Don't forget that there are some STFs where you don't need to have any noticeable build though, if you use other's aggro drawing to sneak in and complete objectives - you're depending on others being able to do DPS in those, but if they are there, you can contribute.

    However, some queues will only pop on normal once a blue moon falls on friday the 13th, so if you want to experience them, you gotta be going for advanced.

    Yeah, the good old '10% rule' and all that. :) Power creep has pretty much obsoleted the need to comnmuncate for most maps, though. People rarely even greet each other in a pug team any more. I still do a quick blurb, every now and then, and will say something half-way witty (so as to not tick ppl off unnecessarily). For instance, in the Battle of Procyon 5, I tend to throw out a quick bit of advice, like:

    "Remember, ABC = Always Be Closing"

    Never know whether such things help, but doing it regardless. :)

    And lots of times, I am not focusing on DPS/ego stroking....lots of times I am doing things non fighting related; such as healing shields or hulls of other players or important NPCS, or doing things like freeing a captured NPC or dropping off supplies or so on. Like the Azure one, I'm often slipping near the asteroid bases and focusing on turning off the tractor beams while the other guys are fighting the Tholians. Sometimes, it's the non fighting roles that are the important ones.....as impossible at that sounds to some folks.

    In Azure Nebula, freeing those ships held in tractor beams is actually a good thing! :) Healing NPC's, though, that's new to me, LOL. (I'm sure they go like 'Wut?!')

    Sometimes NPCS that get their health to zero gotta stop and and heal up....plus in the Dyson quest where you and Tuvok are with "Dr. Cooper" you get a accalod....can't spell the word :| if you can get Tuvok through without having him stop to heal. Honestly, many players intentionally ignore the optionals. Because marks are kinda lame reward, you can finish reps with just the daily box and it's more important to get the missions done with least amount of hassle.

    I see a lot of suggestions that people should play on normal.

    Normal doesn't prepare the player in any way for advanced though. Enemies are usually dead before you can look at them. At least that's my experience.

    It could work, but they'd need to make normal difficulty somewhat more difficult to make team work necessary and get the players an idea of what Advanced will be. In the Advanced versions of the Borg STF's, the enemies could definitely be buffed without causing too much trouble then.

    "The unpopular opinion" - hardly, every few weeks days someone comes in complaining that people should be barred from "their experience" instead of simply playing private groups. If you play with other people you don't know you don't know their playstyle and maybe they aren't up to your standards. Help them, coordinate the team instead of barring them from it.
