How do you manage your Shipyard and Dry Dock slots?

Generally speaking what are the rules that you follow when you decide what to put in shipyards and dry docks?

For example, at the moment I do not use my dry dock at all except as a method of quickly stripping items off of ships. I do not keep any non T5U or T6 ships. Each character has an inventory consisting of any unique ships that they have e.g. Lobi and a selection of other ships appropriate to the character. Ship names are decided in a spreadsheet and are the same for everyone's ship of that type if applicable. Most of my characters have a single unique Fleet ship. All of my characters also have a specific ship that is designated their flagship, often their Fleet or Lobi ship. My Roms and Feds also have a set of three shuttles each and my KDFs have two, each with a standarized set of gear.

What I have been putting in the Drydock is ships that I can't get back if dismissed. Mirror Ships, the free one-time Level up ships (nostalgia), maybe a Fleet ship or two I am not using right now.

I like to keep my shipyard just to ships I am likely to actively use, and put ships I cannot reclaim in drydock. Yeah, I am OCD and have bought drydock slots, even when I have 7 open ship slots.

Yes I think I am crazy.

This. The active slots go to new ships where I still need to learn the mastery trait.

Dry dock = ships that can't be reclaimed and that I never fly.
Shipyard = ships that can't be reclaimed that I do fly (and extra storage on a few toons cause my dry dock is full)
    LTS and loving it.

If I cant reclaim it and I'm not willing to part with it forever, it is dry docked.
I just wish I'd opened a couple of t5u lock box ships on different toons, lessons learned and all that.

Dry dock - things I can't reclaim (like most people, evidently :))
Active roster - Ships I fly + ships I still need to unlock the star ship trait on (also like most people)

I wouldn't say I manage mine. Ships that I don't use often, but that I can't dismiss and reclaim are sent to dry dock while the rest of my ships sit in my active list. I was running really low on space, but Cryptic was nice enough to give us more slots recently. I wish cryptic would make it so that we could move lockbock ships to other characters on our account. I recently purchased the Keldon Cruiser and would love to be able to move my Galor over to another toon. I will never use the Galor again now that I have the Keldon which is the same ship, but better.

Dry dock is useful for me in two ways. First, to strip equipment from a ship. I can sell or recycle the items and get some ec before dismissing the ship. I can strip the ship in one move and reequip it with the the right stuff. Second, to dry dock ships that I never can reclaim.

Well if you are using it to strip equipment off a new ship, you will make 0 EC on the Recycling.

Transfer of Ship Equipment to a newly commissioned ship never worked for my AoY Character. It stopped working on another new Character, after the Character reached Level 50.

I tend to dry dock ships that can't be reclaimed (lobi), bought with dilithium, fleet, or t5u. After that it's sorta random based on which I like most. But if I need space, I'll dump all except the ones listed previously.

Since most ships bought with zen can just be reclaimed as often as I want, there's no reason to save them.

Hmm, my rule is if not using a ship or plan to do so, it's gone. Just get the Admiralty card. As I only have so much time to play and ships I can fly with 4 toons, I have gotten rid of the T5 and lower tier ships on all my characters on PS4. Just have T6 ships from purchase or event so I can reclaim them any time. No plans to add a lot of ships in the future so I don't even consider dry dock.

Dry dock r 4 ships that cant be reclaimed. Makes it easyier
  • meimeitoomeimeitoo Member Posts: 12,594 Arc User
I usually drydock ships that are either Lobi/lockbox (I never dismiss those), or ships I just bought for the Trait, trained up, but am not really interested in flying on a more-or-less regular basis.

N.B. Drydocking is still a half-arsed solution, really. It would be so much more useful if they had gone the extra mile and had the ships keep their loadouts (+ associated tray setups) upon drydocking too.

I only have 2 ships on my whole account that are dry docked, and that is only because they're irreclaimable.

Both of then are T5U Lobi and Lockbox, so are obsolete by today's standards..

Anything that can't be reclaimed in one click from the Z store or other reclaim methods and isn't being used gets shoved in to dry dock. The rest get used or discarded.

Unless you are speaking of a Lockbox T5U, you can certainly Reclaim any C-Store or Event (Account Unlocked) T5U that you dismiss. Also, once you upgrade a C-Store Faction Ship to T5U, you have unlocked the Upgrade for that ship and its Fleet variants for all eligible Characters on your Account.

Recycling the gear that comes with a new ship is always worth 0 EC.

Because otherwise you could get unlimited EC just by repeatedly claiming and dismissing a C-Store ship.

Drydocking a ship drops all its equipped items into your inventory.
  • captainbmoneycaptainbmoney Member Posts: 1,323 Arc User
my active ships are ships I use regularly or ships I'm waiting for T6 versions of. my drydock is pretty much lockbox ships I only need consoles for or ships I want to keep like fleet ships T5.

I have been keeping T-5u and T6 ships in the shipyards, and ship of lowers tiers that I can't get back from dismissing are kept in drydocks. If I am out of ships slots then I dismiss any T5u ships that I can get back and move the tones I can't get back to drydocks. That is what I am currently doing. Eventually I will get a ship from each tier kitted out with max gear in the Shipyards and that is what I will use for that guy to play the game with. But that may be a ways off.

Mines a freaking mess lol.. generally speaking I move t5/t5u to drydock if theyre not free reclaims for the once in a while I wanna use em for funsies.. and others because i just dont feel like trashing them cuz of the investment i have in them.. (t5 lb/lobi boats whether or not i have the t6 replacement). My active roll until the other day with the free slots was 100% full with irreplaceable boats so I need to go through that actually at some point. But because like everybody else I use them for bank space, which is also nearing a premium these days (7 years worth of TRIBBLE will really clog up your system... :)

This, plus: sending a ship to the drydock doesn't recycle the items in the loadout, but transfers them all in one go to the inventory instead of piece by piece. So ships with older equipment (like leveling consoles) will still leave you with the stuff to sell after drydocking them.

I only drydock ships that are T5/T6 non-reclaimable ships like lock box and lobi ships that I have no intention of actually flying ever again. Examples would be T6 lockbox and lobi ships that I buy primarily for the ship trait and T5 "consolation prize" lock box ships and older T5 lock box and lobi ships. I also use the drydock sometimes to temporarily get around my regular ship limit.

I never keep C-Store or Fleet ships in dry dock. Fleet ships stay in my regular list of ships for that character and C-Store ships that I actually intend to use stay on my ship list while all other C-Store Ships and Dilithium ships that I have no intention of using get dismissed.
When you see "TRIBBLE" in my posts, it's because I manually typed "TRIBBLE" and censored myself.

I was reacting to a post where the Poster said he strips ships to sell equipment. I fully realized that the standard equipment was worth 0 and was trying to press that point. I know it has to be that way otherwise the unscrupulous would turn it into an EC mill. Probably those External scammers that sell that stuff would bot the heck out of it. ;)

Stripping it down dumping the junk is the first thing I do with a new ship.

Saves wading through a sea of useless warpcores or beams to find the ones that you want and would actually use.

Let me get this straight, you can use ships you have discarded in Admirality projects still? I thought Admirality was only for ships in dry dock and your shipyard. If not then why wouldn't you keep your drydock full?
