When I I got no e-mail or warning of any kind.tried to chat it says in game I've been silenced for 24 hours. What does this mean and why?

Always keep your chat civil and avoid political, religious and gun talk too, on top of not insulting anyone in general. It's easy to do, and makes for a better environment for all.

    Basically... avoid ESD Zone Chat?

The first thing I do every time I log into STO is close the chat window.

STO Zone Chat is nothing but useless trolling, flaming and hate speech.. I'm better off without it. The only time I ever chat is with my fleet. Makes the game much more enjoyable.

Which is probably why I can't communicate with Fleet members sometimes ... I would do it myself except that I need to communicate with people if I am going to be any use to them. :)

    Wish there was another option.

I personally have three chat windows. One is at the top right and shows Fleet,Armada, and any specific channels that toon is subscribed to that I want to "closely" monitor. On the top left is a window showing mission, system, emotes etc, plus team and any subscribed channels I like to loosely follow.

In it's default position on the bottom left is the "main" chat window for local and zone. Quite easy to totally ignore when zone chat gets idiotic (as happens quite regularly), but still there as local/zone is generally the ONLY method new players have for requesting help and asking questions and I refuse to let some maroons cause me to close the chat window and miss helping someone who needs it.

Oh, and I have team and tells active on all three. That way I don't miss a tell no matter which one I am paying attention to, and once teamed and in an instance (where zone/local doesn't matter) I will notice team messages no matter what area of the screen the action is in that I am paying attention to.

    Well done!

    There is another option.

You can go into chat settings and turn on or off any of the channels you have access to, including Zone Chat. What I've done is created a new tab in my window with nothing but Fleet, Armada and a couple other channels that are generally much different than general Zone Chat. I can see what my friends have to say without having to worry about it scrolling away because someone's debating the politics of allowing unicorns to practice Pastafarianism. It's the only way to really use chat properly, IMHO.

Wait, isn't the 24-hour ban over already? Yet, the topic endures.

    Good advice in general. :)

My thing about communication extends to looking for noobs in trouble even if they aren't in my Fleet. Often I end up having my chat window wide open so I can look over at it. Alas I think most of my people have gotten used to just disconnecting.

It's something to work on. :)
