You probably said something the filters didn't like. There are different levels of filters in game. There's the profanity filter that turns certain combinations of letters into "%$@&#@" and then there's the filters that make sure you aren't breaking the Terms of Service.
The first filter cuts out words like **** and **** but it gets tricked sometimes. My favorite, go into chat (oops, sorry, after your ban is over) and ask about "William Shatner's hit song." The filter turns that into "William Shatner' #%&@+ song." Strangely appropriate, but an error, nonetheless.
The second filter is the one that probably caught you. Either you intentionally* typed something in that is actually banned, or the filter caught something much like "William Shatner' #%&@+ song." *By intentionally, I'm not implying you went out trying to pass banned information, you might not have known that it was against the rules to talk about www.****.com... A while back, I heard about someone using a combination of words that, string together, formed the name of a banned website. More recently, it would ban you for linking ANY website.
The other option, besides a filter auto-silencing you, was someone reported you in chat for harassing or what-have-you. Recall any conversations that you might have gone too far in?

When I I got no e-mail or warning of any kind.tried to chat it says in game I've been silenced for 24 hours. What does this mean and why?
Probably just a mistake. Yours isn't the first case I've heard of, if it is indeed a mistake.
There are no GMs in STO (or they are asleep all the time, who knows). About the only way you get dinged for anything is when it's something that can be considered criminal. And in that case, it would get your behind BANNED, not just "silenced" for 24 hours.
I heard that if enough people click "ignore spam" on your name it'll silence you too. apparently it's why spam bots aren't broadcasting endlessly in zone chat. they broadcast a few times, then get silenced after dozens o people hit ignore spam.
Might work for regular ignore too. So if you were obnoxious enough for a large number of people in zone to ignore you....
About the only way you get dinged for anything is when it's something that can be considered criminal. And in that case, it would get your behind BANNED, not just "silenced" for 24 hours.
Obviously not true, as the OP got silenced. My post details how it can (and has) happened.

there's also the thing I posted....
Indeed. I hadn't heard that one before and your post wasn't there when I started mine. Am omission of ignorance on my part, to be sure. Yet, none of our suggestions contradict one another.

It was probably the Report Spam option as others have noted. It's the closest thing to social teeth offered by Cryptic.
Ignore is useless because most trolls are temp accounts and after all Report Spam already does an ignore as well. Call GM is useless because, to be fair to Cryptic, they could hire a thousand people and it still would not be enough. There are way more broken people in the world who are broken for free then there are moderators who need to be paid.
I doubt it was a bug. It is way more likely you really were objectionable even beyond the standard of zone chat. Which is quite a low bar to reach. Even snails and slugs know to climb bars.
Congratulations, next time is easily just avoided. Picture your actions in the living room with mom & dad and then decide if that is the way you'd actually behave. And if the answer is still yes, yeah then that person pretty broken and deserves to be shunned.
Report Spam is what mature people have to resort to deal constructively with broken people. It's against the law to shoot broken people after all.
When I I got no e-mail or warning of any kind.tried to chat it says in game I've been silenced for 24 hours. What does this mean and why?
Always keep your chat civil and avoid political, religious and gun talk too, on top of not insulting anyone in general. It's easy to do, and makes for a better environment for all.
"You don't want to patrol!? You don't want to escort!? You don't want to defend the Federation's Starbases!? Then why are you flying my Starships!? If you were a Klingon you'd be killed on the spot, but lucky for you.....you WERE in Starfleet. Let's see how New Zealand Penal Colony suits you." Adm A. Necheyev.

I know you meant it differently, but I am still having a different opinion. "Ignore" has helped me a lot through the game, in avoiding people who repeatedly are starting discussions that have - in my personal opinion - no place in zone chat. Still, these would be no cases for any "report spam" button, but while I am interested in politics and debate, I am not as interested doing so in STO, with quite a few people who just have three talking points and no brain to back it up. Having no brain is no crime, but I want my silence, and sometimes I can gather from discussions that I am missing out on reading some idiot spouting his (or her) nonsense. Or actually not really missing out...
My mother was an epohh and my father smelled of tulaberries
Why doesn't chat automatically select "team" for you when you're in an stf?
I think that would be very useful.
I have only used chat to locate a seller of my T6 Connie, other than that it's fun to read some times.
I will respond if somebody is asking for help that's too simple and below everybody else to respond as I've been ignored before when asking a simple question.

Basically... avoid ESD Zone Chat?
The first thing I do every time I log into STO is close the chat window.
STO Zone Chat is nothing but useless trolling, flaming and hate speech.. I'm better off without it. The only time I ever chat is with my fleet. Makes the game much more enjoyable.
If you discuss real-life politics and a GM sees it, you can be silenced. Name-calling, arguing, etc. can cause it also. The stuff they mentioned above are more common.
It really matters about what you were talking about or said.
If you discuss real-life politics and a GM sees it, you can be silenced.
Never happened.. never will happen.
Cryptic could not possibly care less what's said in Zone Chat. They added automated filters to stop gold spammers since that can potentially cut into the profits. The feature where someone can get silenced for spam reports is the most they will ever do, and I'm surprised they even did that.
The 'GM's' in this game do not actually log into the game and help players..

There goes ESD zone chat.
You'll never find a more wretched hive of scum and villainy than ESD zone chat, makes Mos Eisley blush.
I personally have three chat windows. One is at the top right and shows Fleet,Armada, and any specific channels that toon is subscribed to that I want to "closely" monitor. On the top left is a window showing mission, system, emotes etc, plus team and any subscribed channels I like to loosely follow.
In it's default position on the bottom left is the "main" chat window for local and zone. Quite easy to totally ignore when zone chat gets idiotic (as happens quite regularly), but still there as local/zone is generally the ONLY method new players have for requesting help and asking questions and I refuse to let some maroons cause me to close the chat window and miss helping someone who needs it.
Oh, and I have team and tells active on all three. That way I don't miss a tell no matter which one I am paying attention to, and once teamed and in an instance (where zone/local doesn't matter) I will notice team messages no matter what area of the screen the action is in that I am paying attention to.
Yes, Virginia, there are GMs - they sometimes pop on and ask for people to bug test; given that everytime I've seen one do it they are flooded with "What do I get for it?" or "Okay, I will but I want 'x' for my time/effort", I can see why they don't make themselves known unless they *have* to do so.
Kinda like Devs here - they get so "jumped on" (usually) when they do take the time to show that not many seem to do so (at least not in the STO area). Granted, Spartan has been on a bit more lately (which is nice to see) with answers/replies...so - hope springs eternal!

You must have heard that from me, in the last thread on this topic a few days ago when I brought it up! Remember to source your information!
I have seen GMs twice in game (last time was definitely more than a year ago), just idly chatting with players until they asked for an STF team and went their merry ways.
My mother was an epohh and my father smelled of tulaberries
1: Sufficient "Report Spam" clicks within a certain period of time. (Like Nabreeki, I am aware of the number and the length, as it was discussed in the CO forums at the time; like Nabreeki, I won't reveal those numbers, because they would without question be used to harass people for no good reason.)
2: A somewhat larger number of "Ignore" clicks within the same time span.
Basically, if you're the sort of person who sits in Chat pleading with people to send you EC or gear without recompense, for an hour or so at a time (and I've seen this behavior going on), you're going to get enough people Ignoring or Reporting you to get an auto-chatban. The numbers used to be lower, and the period of time indefinite, leading to such abuse of the system that I named the first Nemesis of one of my CO characters "Autochatban" just so I could beat up the concept every so often.

But I have a feeling it might be best not to repeat it here, so just wait 24 hours would be my advice.

No problem, apologies if it came across confrontational, that is not how it was intended.
