Anyone see Rogue One yet? (Spoiler tags in use but it's safer to read after you see the movie )

Spoilers are starting to pop up. Not anything big but if you want to see it without any foreknowledge then read this thread after you see the movie

I don't want to get into spoilers but if they come up I will add a warning to the header. Great film not perfect but still very much worth it. Go see it.
It's pretty dark as far as Star Wars goes but also has some good laughs and some real heroics. I would give Episode 7 a 7.5 (pretty good movie not the best but far from the worst. Rogue One however is a 9. Kinda odd that the movie that could have done anything (Episode 7) was less original then the movie that was stuck between canon events with the outcome already known. (Rogue One)

    I did! Was great. Wished we learned some history on some of the characters, but overall good movie, especially the ending.

    There is one thing I find unusual about this movie is that they planned the sequel a while ago. In fact, there are rumors the sequel was planned BEFORE it, along with SEVERAL other sequels.

    Still trying to work out where it fits in my best Star Wars movies list but for now my list best to worst is as so.

    Empire Strikes Back 9.5
    Rogue One 9
    Return of the Jedi 8.5
    A New Hope 8
    The Force Awakens 7.5
    Revenge of the Sith 6.5
    The Phantom Menace 5
    Attack of the Clones 3

    The movie was fantastic. Go see it!

    Also, big SW fans should read Catalyst before seeing this movie. It gives the backstory on the Ersos and Krennick. Very good, as well.

    It was reported two months ago (or so) that Kathleen Kennedy said there would be no sequel, and I've heard nothing to the contrary...

    Of course, the movie will definitively answer the possibilities of a sequel, LOL...

    I enjoyed it a lot. I was amused that there were several sequences in the trailers NOT in the movie. Should be some interesting deleted scenes when it comes out for home viewing.

    Haven't seen it yet, but based on the trailers I fully expect it to be my new #1 Star Wars movie. My current list is:

    1. Return of the Jedi (10/10)
    2. Revenge of the Sith (9.5/10) (yes there's acting problems, and Padme's fate is stupid as hell, but overall I loved it)
    3. A New Hope (9/10)
    4. The Empire Strikes Back (9/10)
    5. The Phantom Menace (9/10) (my only complaint is that the events of the movie don't feel like they impact anyone outside of Naboo, and I didn't mind Jar Jar unlike most people)
    6. The Force Awakens (4/10) (this is the movie that made me hate JJ Abrams, it's a better film than AotC but I still hate almost everything about it, the characters of Rey, Finn and Poe are really the only things I'm ok with)
    7. Attack of the Clones (1/10) (horrible acting from Hayden Christianson, horrible writing, and the most cringe inducing love scenes you'll ever see in a movie, this movie is basically unwatchable outside of the ok lightsaber duel at the end, even the big clone battle scene was bad as it showed both sides marching at each other and firing with no cover, while every shot misses the clones and the battle droids get demolished)

    Best Star Wars movie since Empire Strikes Back. The movie also strives hard to make it a believable movie set just prior to Ep.IV. And I was completely overjoyed to see classical Star Destroyers, X-Wings, TIE Fighters, etc.

    there are classical star destroyers and tie fighters in rebels too - you could've seen both those 3 years before rogue one came out​​

    I'm just not fond of non-movie Star Wars stuff over the years, esp. the animation style and story of Rebels and to the same extent, the preceding Clone Wars.

    there's nothing wrong with rebel's story, and anything that has thrawn in it automatically jumps to 10/10 ratingwise​​

    There's something about the Clone Wars show that reminded me, a tiny bit, of Star Trek. The pacing was good too. Star Wars Rebels makes me cringe so much.

    I like Rebels for the most part, though it bothers me that the A-Wing and B-Wing now exist before the Battle of Yavin. I'm also hoping Ezra ends up becoming Snoke.

    Yes, but the ships in Rebels are not the R-22, they are infact the RZ-1 A-Wing that appeared at Endor. I just don't understand why Disney had to take a known ship and make it significantly older than it was in Legends (a novel about Ahsoka puts A-Wings in service 18 years BBY now ...) when there has always been the Z-95 Headhunter for the Alliance to use before getting the more advanced X-Wing.

    Saw it today and i'd say it's possibly my favourite SW film of all time. I know the original trilogy are amazing and I love them to bit but this just felt much more gritty and real to me, as if there was a real threat to the galaxy in the form of the Empire.

    Plus this really puts the "war" into Star Wars.
    Having so many little nods to the other films was also really cool. Not massive in your face name-drops or the like, just the odd familiar face thrown in.
    The two goons from the Mos Eisley cantina, Red & Gold Leaders, the Imperial Guard in Vader's castle, Senator Organa
    Also there were hints of connection to the Rebels show as well, their ship is visible on Yavin 4 and there's a comm announcement for a familiar character though we don't see them.

    Something I really liked was that we saw the Death Star's power from the ground perspective, albeit at low power setting. That made it seem like a much more terrifying weapon. It would scare the bejesus out of any survivors whilst being absolutely deadly to the target area. Plus the effects of those two shots from it were beautiful.

    Oh and award for best action sequence in the film.....that bit where they used a disabled Star Destroyer to ram another one - EPIC.

    My Head Canon that would have made it a near 10/10 (IMO)
    - "The 2 at the end" make it off of Scarif, and disappear into the stars to live a quiet farming life in secrecy, away from the violence. Away from war... They've done their part, and have to live with their actions.
    Perhaps even at Gailand Erso's farm.

    - The Blind Guy; If he would have disappeared like Yoda and Ben.. I swear to God I would've lost my mind, and that would have made it perhaps one of the greatest scenes in all of SW.
    THE BLIND GUY was AMAZING.

    Add those 2 things to the actual movie. It would've been 9.9/10 as far as my opinion goes.

    As it is now. I give it a solid 8/10.

    But I'm sticking with my head canon. I like my ending better. :mrgreen:


    All in all, (and I'm a harsh critic) I really enjoyed it.

    One thing though.
    Why did Vader look so corny ? There was something not right with the costume. Looked more like what someone would wear to a comic-con, rather then an official Darth Vader costume.
    Anyone else notice that ? Or am I being too picky ?

    Only thing i really noticed was that his voice was clearly aged. James Earl Jones hasn't gotten any younger and it sadly showed at least to me.
    But that's a minor nitpick, seeing him let loose on those rebel scum was just amazing, i dread to think what happened to the rest of the crew of that ship since it was disabled and defenseless.

    If I had to write a bit more about it, here are some thoughts.
    As I wrote earlier, it's not a bad movie per se. It had quite a lot moments of awesome, if only for the style. The movies main problem, in my opinion, is that it is really unnecessary. In my opinion, the story about those spies didn't need to be told, especially since we sacrifice one of our dearest Star Wars tropes for it - the Deathstar weakpoint, retconned to be engineered by the Rebellion all along. I don't know what to think about losing that...

    But honestly, in short: Rogue one is a Star Wars movie which is... almost all War and no Stars. It tells us a story set in the universe but without any of the characters we know, without Jedi and without the Force. And in turn, as much as I like the fresh approach, it loses everything which makes Star Wars what it is, save the action. Star Wars is in it's essence a fairy tale and not a war movie. This time though there is no fairy tale and I guess that's just not for me. Our ensemble cast is good, we don't have a single annoying or bad acted character amongst them and they all play their part well - but at the same time they all stay very bland. Nobody got me invested at all, and not only because we already knew everybody is going to die in the end. Ultimately, Rogue One was all flash an no substance and left me with an empty feeling of - why was this movie made?

    On the other hoof, what they did in terms of visuals and dropping bonbons for the fans of the old trilogy was cinema gold. Authentic costumes and props made me squeal in joy numerous times - THIS is how you make a prequel, if you are going to make one. Do not "update" but work with what you got. The downside was the massive use of CGI in this one. While TFA used a lot of practical effects you can tell that RO just feels very video-gamey, and not just because most of it is watching someone play Star Wars Battlefront. And I said it before: Dat face CGI - oh god, why? If you have to put Tarkin in the movie - and his voice was done very very well - just let his character stand in the shadows or not let him move. But the CGI they used was ages behind the facial CGI we see in the Marvel movies. Tarkin seems like a video game character cut into the movie, staring from lifeless, wonky eyes massively disrupting the feel of every scene he's in. And Leia/Carrie Fisher at the end? Made me laugh out loud, sorry. It made the final scene feel like a parody.

    But not every link to the pass was as unlucky. RO managed to make Darth Vader menacing again. Yes, after all the years of ridicule, Vader going after the plans was just thrilling, and menacing. Hooves down, no debate. And in other positive news: Mon Calamari, Mon Calamari! pig-2.gif

    Just wanted to respond to this specifically, there are a large number of fans, myself included, who really enjoy it when the Force is left out of Star Wars and the stories instead focus on more relatable characters who lack Jedi abilities. Don't get me wrong, Jedi are awesome, but the old X-Wing book series, and games like X-Wing Alliance and pre-NGE Star Wars Galaxies, proved that you can have a great Star Wars experience without them.
