Ok how i won the race when i crossed the finish line some other place grabs the flag from right under my nose, this race is completely and utterly unfair.
Please can you change this mechanic because it is very irritating and completely unfair.
It's a race to grab the flag, not to just cross 'the finish line'. This is the way it has always been for years!
"You don't want to patrol!? You don't want to escort!? You don't want to defend the Federation's Starbases!? Then why are you flying my Starships!? If you were a Klingon you'd be killed on the spot, but lucky for you.....you WERE in Starfleet. Let's see how New Zealand Penal Colony suits you." Adm A. Necheyev.
That's how it has always been. Same for the race on Risa. You figure it out after a couple tries, and if not.....do a practice run without anyone else on the course to figure out the slide/aim thing at the end. But just as a heads up, don't complain about anything not being "fair" unless you are ok getting flamed. As you will. And rightly so. It's a game, that's F2P. So if they give you anything for free.....it's totally their right to make it not easy to get the best rewards. That's how games work. So.....practice the race. You aren't entitled to anything. And grow thick skin if you are going to post things like this. Good luck!

Doesn't it make your blood BOIL OP? No matter what the intent is or has been for over 5 years...I still get the same feeling even when I win...to lose.
On a side note, first time I ran the race I came in 3rd and overshot the 2nd place flag as did everyone else probably now knowing... jumped in place and grabbed it over the fence, all I thought at the time was "YOINK" and had a big evil smile on my face... then back to hating how much time is in between events that last 2 mins
A normie goes "Oh, what's this?"
An otaku goes "UwU, what's this?"
A furry goes "OwO, what's this?"
A werewolf goes "Awoo, what's this?"
"It's nothing personal, I just don't feel like I've gotten to know a person until I've sniffed their crotch." "We said 'no' to Mr. Curiosity. We're not home. Curiosity is not welcome, it is not to be invited in. Curiosity...is bad. It gets you in trouble, it gets you killed, and more importantly...it makes you poor!"

That's why I don't do the summer or winter competitive races anymore - the flag mechanic is TRIBBLE. The truth is they don't know how to code it so the first to cross the finish line wins, not to mention the issues that lag would cause.
So be like me and don't do it. Forget it even exists.
there is at least one every year. I don't really understand it. I get 1st or 2nd nearly every time I race. Its not hard. There was that bug that people used to use that cheated them to the end then they would take 1st but you could grab 2nd and then go race again.
just win by a lot so you don't have to worry about it.

While I would prefer a straight "first to get across the finish line" race myself, I am quite certain Cryptic could - very easily - do that. However, they have decided that the evently complaints are still fewer than the ones they would get otherwise with people having different perceptions, often due to lags in placing opponents.

LOL HAHAHAHA!!! I literally LoL'd... seriously? What a cry baby, a lot of you cry babies have been popping up over the past 2 days.
The flag spawns in the same spot every time, aim for it and start mashing F as you get closer... DUH!!! You can do this race like 50 times a day, you'll get what you want out of it, heck I already have half the tags I need for the entire event and only did a small handful of races.
Doesn't matter what Cryptic uses, even having a finishing line wont change anything as you will still get threads like this, I CROSSED THE LINE FIRST ON MY SCREEN BUT ONLY GOT THIRD WTF?, latency and de-sync make racing systems hard to code for a fair result.
The only change Cryptic needs to make to put an end to these complaints is a text only change.
From Competitive PVP race, to COMPETITIVE PVP CAPTURE THE FLAG,
Or just to capture the flag. Doing this for both Summer and winter events will let people know its not about the finish line but the flags and these threads will no longer have any basis.

This is my favorite way to win a race.
When you see "TRIBBLE" in my posts, it's because I manually typed "TRIBBLE" and censored myself.
Just find a nearly empty instance and you'll be doing the race nearly alone.
Or....just get a massive head start and then you can slow right down at the flag.
Great thing about the WW? The race tracks are open 24/7 so you can easily practice nonstop to learn a good route that cuts corners and stuff, develop your tactics and skill at turning on the ice. So when the competitive part comes up, you'll be ready.
The flags are DESIGNED to be unfair. The game is allegedly unable to properly synchronize so that the dude you see running right behind you may actually be in front of you on the server. The purpose of the flags is to give plausible deniability when that dude wins.
At least in the winter race is better than the summer one. The flag placement is still pure trolling but at least you aren't hamstrung by movement restrictions and can reliably stop at the flag by jumping.
My advice: Find an instance with few people and avoid peak times. I was racing by myself last night and there were only 4 in the whole instance on the second day of the event. YMMV.
All you cry babies apparently never read that to win you must grab the flag. So get over it. Read the dang hints just like the myrid other things in the game I see folks going after things that have nothing to do with the mission then they cry when the pug fails because theyw ere off cahsing spawns instead of closing gates or defending an NPC that needs to stay alive. Get over it OP read the hints!
Not to mention that the reward is no where near the effort.
I've got no more room for pets, period.
Give me a place to store my creatures, with a way (paid or not) to increase that space, and even I would be willing to endure the ridiculousness of having to grab a flag.

Welcome to the Winter (and Summer) game mechanic! It's been around for years. Everyone hates it, but probably never going to change. So deal with it, find an empty instance or don't do it.
Sometimes I think I play STO just to have something to complain about on the forums.

Until Cryptic fixes it...people will always flame about it. It's like Risa's surfing race. Cryptic's motto: We reward failure and punish success.
Sadly, I would just get used to it.
You'll be seeing threads like this almost daily until the event ends. Happens every year.
