What kind of personality do you give your characters?

For example,

My character, McQueen, is the archetypical captain. Brace, strategic, guile, respectful, and so on. He also tends to be a bit of a flirt with females of all kinds having picked this up from his ancestor, Captain McQueen from the Drozana Starion mission.

His second in command, Suvak, is essentially a female Spock though without the emotions. Though McQueen kind off has a crush on her, though she does not notice it.

The science Officer, Cruz, is a nicer version of Dr. McCoy. He is the best friend of McQueen and is a bit of a geek.

The chief engineer, Casey, is a strict no-nonsense kind of Officer. While Scotty is a bit easy-going and fun guy to be around, Casey is more strict, essentially Wong from the recent Doctor Strange film.

The operations officer, Dissen, is a female Andorran who is quite eager for a fight. She is brave, hot-blooded, and tomboyish. She sometimes pushes people due to her attitude.

Oh boy a fluff thread. I'll bite.

Captain James C. Jexsam of the USS V'nashir is a quiet, bold man with an almost self-destructive tendency to stick to his convictions. It's cost him a shot at the admiral's chair more than once, but he does too much good to take him out of command, so he sits at captain. In his personal relations he's a bit of a paradoxical softie. A few officers he's served under joke that he's actually two different people in one body. What you end up with is a captain that's great in tactical and exploration environments but relies more on his staff for diplomatic missions.

Captain Endrea "Ender" R. Pritchard was recovered from wreckage shortly after Wolf 359, but was placed in cryosleep when it was determined that she was too damaged to undergo the procedure to remove her implants. It was tech recovered after Vega Colony that gave doctors what they needed to regenerate and revive Ender. The experience cooled the temper she once had, but did little to calm the fire in her heart. She is a fearsome presence on the bridge and at the diplomatic table, and doesn't take TRIBBLE from anyone. Being effectively dead for so long has, however, understandably taught her patience and perspective.

Vikael is a Romulan Republic Commander with a long history of being flirty and kind of a TRIBBLE. But she didn't earn her position with what's between her legs - mostly, anyway. Her tactical mind has made her a minor legend among the Republic fleet, and when she gives an order, people listen. Her role in the defense of New Romulus during the Elachi attack was pivotal. She can be flippant and fickle in diplomatic situations, but manages to scrape by without causing interstellar incidents.

Elthora is an Orion slaver and intelligence liaison for the KDF. Though she isn't technically a member of the KDF, she works closely with them, using her slave trade as a cover to move Klingon Intelligence agents in exchange for the them overlooking any illegal activity she may be involved in in their space. She is seductive and sultry, a master of subtlety, but far from a submissive slave girl, being a cold and pragmatic commander. Her favorite slave acts as the "face" of her vessel in most of their dealings, with Elthora herself playing the part of slave girl in service to him.

None. My character isn't real nor do I pretend it is. None of my boffs have names, and they aren't altered in any way from how they come out-the-box. I have one used costume slot, that is worn all the time, and I don't play space Barbie.

I didn't bother thinking out personalities for all of my characters. But they end up with wildly varying personalities because they're all different. One is actually meant to be a liberated Borg Trill. :p

I do like these kind of threads.

My AoY character, Captain Dean Foch, is the very dashing image of a 2260s Starfleet captain. Capable, bright, dramatic, and good in a fistfight, the sort of person to be trusted in the depths of space, distant from any authority, carrying the flame of the Federation. Unfortunately, he's in the 2410s, when you can pop from Bajor to Q'onos for scones, where powers from other dimensions and times manipulate events.

He's doing his best under the circumstances, but the pace of events means he hasn't really caught up himself, and he's basically only been able to keep his crew going, as the majority of them are struggling to adjust as well. He's doing well as an operative but not the best as a captain where a good right hook doesn't carry you as far.

Captain Valdez, very intelligent and patient with his crew. He only fights when he has to, he has a good working relationship with his crew who will follow him into hell if need be. Military tactics are his strong point as is diplomacy.

My main character Claire is a human liberated borg and was assimilated during a Starfleet Academy trip to a far flung Federation colony world which was still in the early stages of development. The transport ship she and her class were on was ambushed after being forced out of warp and after a very brief and ultimately futile resistance the ship and all hands were lost.

Roughly one year later she was rescued when the sphere she was on ran afoul the U.S.S. Odysseus (a ship an older character of mine commanded, an Odyssey named Odysseus). After Claire along with many other drones boarded the ship she was incapacitated and then de-borgified.

She returned home to her family then shortly after went back to complete her education at Starfleet academy and become a Starfleet officer in part to protect as many people as she could from the nightmare which happened to her at the hands of the Borg.

Nope, just responding to the question. Not everyone plays in the same way, or has the same kind of emotional tie to a virtual product. Never said anything about it being weird, wrong, or intended to be demeaning. A simple factual statement of my opinion.

Haven't got around to writing a bio to each of my 10 toons yet, much like most of their ground crew hasn't been customized.

Fed Sci Human: Takes Picard as a role model, questioning orders from superiors, struggling with moral dilemmas, making exceptions to established protocols. Also serves own interests, a rogue agent of sorts, infiltrating Section 31 and using their power to meet own agendas. Vetoes SF orders or simply assigns crew or second in command to deal with standard missions. Does not refrain from using enemies by establishing temporary alliances on mutually beneficial terms to achieve personal goals. A fighter against the SF temporal hegemony as a result of ethics and moral obligations to all life forms and freedom of personal agency and expression. Prefers to live and let live, but acknowledges this isn't always possible, and so chooses to fight in order to help those that would otherwise remain oppressed or meet certain doom. Also enjoys deep space exploration, making scientific discoveries, pushing beyond known boundaries, meeting new cultures, and pondering on the deeper meaning of what Q has told Picard in his many encounters. Regularly violates the Prime Directive if a species is certain to go extinct or cause extinction of other forms of life, or to impart knowledge and even grant asylum to select members who desperately and justifiably seek these.

Romulan Tac: Loyal to the Romulan Star Empire but not its current degenerate 'fraction' but as one independent from both republicans and current Imperials. Tries to serve fellow Romulans, be they republicans, or imperials, in order to see the error of their ways, and often poses and acts as a Tal Shiar agent doing their bidding but only as long as it furthers this greater agenda. In such troubled times, the ends in this case do justify the means. Rejects federation/UFP, and KDF alliances, often acting on behalf of Imperials and Tal Shiar in order to sever unnecessary dependence on them, but otherwise promotes tolerance and cultural dialogue if mostly as a means of spying and keeping tabs. Does not seek reunification with Vulcans but strives to make peace and establish cultural dialogue and sharing. Works with Vulcans and Remans in order to re-awaken lost powers of mind melds, telepathy, telekinesis, channeling emotionality through logic for clear thinking, and austerities for personal and cultural development. Often found spying, infiltrating, or even establishing legitimate relations with all species in order to explore and exploit material and immaterial resources. Served to protect Romulan Scientists and Engineers in exploring the Dyson spheres, and engaging with Elachi, Heralds, and Iconians towards such ends, but does not regret the consequences, since being at the forefront of science and technology requires accepting high risks and taking unconventional approaches despite danger in order to serve Romulan brothers and sisters.

Orion Tac: A rogue agent enjoying the freedom of anarchy among the KDF, living the free life to do as one pleases. Uses the powers of stealth, deception, allure and even seduction in order to influence, persuade, bribe, blackmail, and hypnotize to exert considerable control in the empire. Is also highly skilled at martial arts in order to engage enemies that are almost always more powerful in close combat. Uses her crew to do her bidding generally. Follows the Klingon code of honor but only among those Klingons that have personally demonstrated this and in more specific circumstances, and generally avoids exerting such powers on these. Often engages Federation in battle when they demonstrate lack of respect or otherwise try to impose themselves in any way, but is otherwise mostly harmless and enjoys to party with everyone. Fights against the temporal accords and does what is necessary to ensure KDF remain strong, independent, and free.

I don't 'give' my characters personalities, they provide them themselves ;)

Cara has always been hard-working and studious, with a somewhat whimsical sense of humor... Events during her final year at the academy brought her to the attention of Admiral Janeway, who took it upon herself to act as a mentor to the young Pentaxian, suggesting a shift from operations-based, to a command-based career (brought a nice bit of nostalgia to the conversation when Neelix mentions 'Captain Janeway', to which Cara then comments about 'Admiral Janeway') Career events forced her into a command position, and a combination of fast-tracking, due to Mad Kathy's endorsements, and the years which the game progress represents (Consider the growth of Singh's hair...) means that she's now not a freshly graduated cadet, but a grown woman with a family and kids back home...

Makirto (Klingon chief of security) Assigned to Cara for his cadet's Midshipman's cruise... Turned up late for his first duty shift on the bridge, and made up for it ever since... Upon graduation, requested reassignment under Cara's command... During ground battles, he is always the first to engage the enemy, and always the first to return to Cara's side afterwards... A nephew of K'Valk, he proudly carries his uncle's bat'leth in battle...

Porsche has a 'famous' twin: Mercedes Santiago... Both are ground-based tactical officers... Buenos Aires-native Porsche has a fondness for personal cloaking devices and flying drop kicks...

Liz Flores (CloneBatch:EF-019284756) is a Mariposan clone, who became Cara's best friend after she (Cara) returned to the Academy after the hatching of her first child. Following the events at Vega Colony, she returned to the academy to retrain as an engineering officer. She wasn't happy when another Flores was assigned as ship's tactical officer, because it made her clone-nature more obvious to the Natural Borns...

Sihna has returned to ship-board science duty following a deep-cover assignment in the KDF. As an Orion, she knows she attracts attention... As cool and laid-back as a cucumber, she is nevertheless, deadly in combat... A lover of animals, she misses the jackal-mastiff she had while on assignment in the Empire, and had to leave with her former captain, Q'sha, due to quarantine issues...

Alys had only been in the Bajoran militia for a week, before being put on crowd control duty at a Klingon riot in Hathon... Panicked and overwhelmed by the situation, she confided in Cara, who then facilitated her transfer from the militia, to assume an enlisted position in Starfleet, becoming one of her longest-serving tactical officers...

Cara and her squad doing their bit for anti-piracy operations...

      IMG_0609_zps02j9fmmc.jpg

Liz declined to be photographed on this occasion, necessitating the use of bridge security logs to identify her...

Heh, my TOS character, Fanlaf-du, is a male Tellarite whose reaction to beign recruited as a temporal agent was basically: "so you want me to fight a war in the future? Show me who to kill first."

AOY is kind of funny with coming to 2409 when you think about it:

"Oh, this terrible future, the Federation beset by war!"
      "Oh - against who?"
"The Klingons who dastardly broke the peace treaty."
"What? Again?! Look, you pulled me out of time, let me show you how to finish this properly"

My chronology for Dean has my old Starfleet main still handling those missions, so the warrior from the distant, savage past arrived too late to help out these overly-civilized and bueraucratic future folks. :)

Just to indulge on a few others I write on.

Antonine (said Starfleet engineer), meanwhile, has settled a lot more into the command seat (and really the flag bridge) compared to where she was as a jumped up ensign. Experience of enough wars to last a Vulcan's lifetime have caught up with the Starfleet training. She's probably the bridge crew I've got the least grasp on since the game didn't give as much of a start. She tends to go a little lighter and probably has the least on-screen combat in stories I write. She's also the most 'common', an (originally) humble officer picked by fate to help save the Federation.

D'ellian (KDF tactical) - is an Orion struggling against the indolence of her species for the violent meritocracy of the Klingons. Not that she didn't have some birth advantages to reach the Academy, but eh. Her stories usually involve the chaotic nature of the KDF and the needs of public honor versus dark pragmatism. And even public honor means some vicious things during the Klingon War. She's navigated the pitfalls to a position of honor, but is well aware she could fall. Her bridge crew reflects that strain, with several conflicting objectives, all of which are served by their personal loyalty. Her first officer is pure Klingon, her science officer is Gorn and also aware of their outsider status, and they have a strong intellectual romance going on. Her engineer is also Klingon, but is in it to get paid. I find her stories usually have Imperial opposition as well as external enemies.

An'riel (RR science) - The humble farmer risen to great heights, with the Republic rising along the way. She's often concerned with fate; in the sweeping epics or operatic sense, that she's overly fortuitous. Her bad habit of being in the right place to discover new rising threats does lend some credibility to this viewpoint. She's also remarkably calm for a Romulan, beyond their usual iron will and control; the questionable boon of completely achieving your revenge seems to have instilled a measure of stillness on the passions at all Vulcanoid's core. Her crew is her family; and she has no desire to live in the past, but wants the Republic to have honor going forward, personally and as a government.

I made my toon (I only have one) a Kelvin Timeline-themed character with KT ships, weapons, and uniforms, but he doesn't really have a "personality" per se. I guess I just haven't felt any need to write any sort of background story for him or his crew. He's basically just a STO version of me. lol

Fleet Admiral Di'an is your typical upstart vulcan science officer, who always looks at others from the tip of his nose. At least that's the impression he leaves in his fleet-mates... The ones non-vulcans, of course. Especially the humans. He is so conservative and backwards that he would argue with anyone all day about the "hasty", "human-esque" and "reckless" nature of the current political situation the Federation is in. That doesn't mean he doesn't know where his loyalty stands, of course. Loyalty is the only logical decision, after all. Little that his friends and close-ones know is he has two very deep and very dark secrets: 1) He is secretly in love with his first officer Elisa Flores, which is against all his principles and could cost him his carrier and his reputation. Even his life. 2) He secretly admires the Borg and daydreams about being assimilated and being part of the Collective, which has to be the greatest feeling in the Universe. The Logical Perfection.

      My Delta recruit
Cerys- Not your typical Vulcan. Orphaned at an early age and raised by humans. She is logical but has taken on a few human traits due to her upbringing.

      Temporal Agent
Solux- Vulcan science. Studied at both Starfleet Academy and the Vulcan Science Academy in the 2220s, his cold calm demeanor puzzles most of his multi species crew especially his Andorian XO Tarsi. When he was pulled into the 25th Century, his only thought was "fascinating".

I don't give my alts a "backstory" per se, but I think the way that many of us create our alts and our ships defines the characters and effectively creates a backstory for them. For me, I like to keep things as authentic as possible. So:

My Fed Tac has a Jupiter Class carrier. He and his Boffs are all dressed in smart Odessey Dress uniforms. Weapons are phaser based. This alt takes the role of "Fleet Admiral" literally, hence the Jupiter Class.

My Klink Tac flies a B'rel BOP, bridge officers all Klink, simple warrior uniforms. Weapons are disruptor based.

My Reman Sci Has the Nemesis uniform and my Boffs are all Reman. The ship s a Shamshir dread reskinned as the Reman Scimitar. Weapons are plasma based.

Then I went completely leftfield with my AOY sci alt......

I took inspiration from 2,000 Leagues under the sea (1954 movie) so my alt is Captain Nemo (I did a good job of making my alt look like Nemo from the movie), piloting the temporal dreadnought "Nautilus" through Time & Tide.

Heath Layress, Bajoran captain of the Sovereign class USS Los Lobos.
The Los Lobos is not the pride of the fleet, far from it. She is Starfleet's dumping ground for all its "problem children". Heath can often be heard yelling "Prophets above, why me?" about her crew. However despite the varied personality problems onboard they somehow manage to survive and get their assignments done

It can be exhausting typing in back stories for so many characters and then relating them all here in the forum, but here are a few basics from my STO experience thus far.

I generally prefer to keep all of my STO characters outfitted in the game canon Odyssey uniforms and variations; although I've tried out the other Starfleet styles. For the female officers I always utilize skirts over trousers. Between my main gamertag and alt, I currently have sixteen STO games running at various stages. I've got both male & female captains & admirals, and I've also got many races represented including Human, Vulcan, Klingon, Romulan, Liberated Borg, Trill, Joined Trill, Andorian, Ferengi & Alien. What can I say, I love character creation in games; so sue me!!

Same here, canon uniform (and variants) all the way with mine too B) My headcanon rule is skirts for Lt and above if they choose... I have some female officers in pants (either regular duty, or field uniform) just by what feels right for each (for example, Cara has two chief engineers (or rather, two officers of equal rarity and traits who are equally useful) Liz wears a skirt, Sarina wears pants...) B)

Ah, this looks like an enjoyable discussion!

First thing I should say is that a lot of my toons - especially Fed side - are based upon story characters of mine, and thus are adapted to the trek 'verse. And, copious amounts of cross overs! XD Having said that ...

Jamie Blanchard, fed engineer. She is the leader of a race called the Blurg'athri, a near human race. Primarily a diplomat, and prior to being elected, headed a high-tech corporation, a la Tony Stark. She is compassionate and wise.

Luna Isjungfrun, Fed Tactical. Cousin of Jamie, and a career military officer who is tasked with the security of the Blurg'athri colonies.

Autumn Blanchard, Fed Sci. Daughter of Jamie. Hardworking, humble and conscientious. She seeks to emulate her hero Glenn Miller, and occasionally serves in the Federation USO.

Nina Isjungfrun, Fed sci. Half elf/half blurg'athri. Oft mistaken for a Vulcan. Over 200 years old. She is the colonial historian.

Anastasia Elspeth McCullen, KDF Sci. Orion mad scientist. Daughter of the current era's Destro. (( Yep, my head canon includes a G.I. Joe cross over! XD )) She also has a half sister, Doris "Monkeywrench" McCullen. (( My KDF engineer toon. ))

Big Louie, KDF Tactical. Gorn. Models himself after the gangsters of the Depression era, and even names his ships after famous gangsters such as Al Capone, Pretty Boy Floyd; which is a departure from my usual Transformer themed names. XD

There are a few others, but these are my "stars", so to speak, and with that, my temporal agent toon, whom has taken over as my main of late. XD

Olga "Eagle" Rose, Fed Tactical. After being recruited by Daniels, she was sent back to Earth 1944 to rescue members of a PT boat crew. Namely PT 73! ~whistles the McHale's Navy theme~ Afterwards, Eagle found herself in the 1980s assisting an organization known as G.I. Joe before returning to the "present". She is conscientious and brave, and always strives to do the right thing.

As for the uniforms of my crews and toons, my feds are usually seen in TOS attire, or a WW2 inspired outfit. KDFs look like SWAT troopers, or escapees from a Judas Priest video.
Resident TOS, G.I. Joe, Transformers and hair metal fangirl.

And knowing is half the battle!

        21 'til I die!

All ten of my characters are related in some way. I have their bio's set up as my main as the head of the household (He is also the fleet leader). The rest are sisters, brothers, ex-wives, adopted family members and of course the live in girlfriend, who happens to be a Orion (My only KDF toon.)

I've got stories over in Ten Forward about my main Sills, my Ferengi Grunt (who now works for Starfleet Intelligence), and the timelost Iain Burwell (thrown forward from the Earth-Romulan War, and recruited by Starfleet); I plan on writing one about my first Temporal Recruit, Kevin Timeline (although I'll change the last name, probably Tamlin or something, because the name is a joke based on a repeated typo in the forums).

Kevin's basically your typical Kirk-style 23c Starfleet captain, trying to adjust to this new time he finds himself in. Fortunately, his latest ship is one he's at least kind of familiar with - a refurbished Ranger-class battle cruiser, the USS Time Bandit. The TB has a lot of future tech under the hood (in-game, it's a Paladin with a Ranger skin), but it looks, and to Kevin and his 23c crewmates feels, like the style of ships they used to know. He chafes under the tight tabs Starfleet keeps on their commanders in this era of instantaneous communications across the quadrant, but he puts up with it because Starfleet is the only life he's ever known.

One of these days I'll also tell tales about Subadmiral Tovan Khev, whose bridge crew consists entirely of alternate versions of Tovan and Rinna Khev from across the multiverse (the spatiotemporal rift in the Azure Nebula seems to have selectively drawn Tovans from hundreds of universes, and dumped them in this one)...

My main is a female Romulan Tactical captain, who basically doesn't get along with Sela because Sela is way too soft. Her rage at the destruction of Romulus isn't something you address by shooting ONE Iconian. Its more of a prolonged plan unseen and unfelt until it is sprung, culminating in the perfect and total extinction for those self-aggrandizing twits. This is the Romulan way. But she happily slaughters Iconian ships while she waits for all the pieces to be moved into place.

Despite her tactical background, she spends a lot of time in the guts of her ship with a wrench and a logic probe, because while it looks great on paper, the Tal Shiar Adapted Destroyer is an uneasy coalition of bleeding edge Romulan tech (a.k.a. prone to mysterious breakdowns and hard to source parts for) and half-tamed Borg nanotech. It's a killing machine to be sure, but some days its a little like trying to keep a 94 lb. foaming-at-the-mouth weasel on a 20-foot leash while attending a formal wedding. One moment of inattention and it's bitten four of the guests, destroyed the food table, and is humping the figurines at the top of the wedding cake.

But oh, give her a tumultuous battlefield and allies that know to stay the hell out of your forward arc and she is a dream to fly. The Tal Shiar may be a bit melodramatic, but they were not wrong to name her class "Death"...

        None...

They are digital characters that are fun to fiddle around with, but they are JUST pixels... They have no personality and TBH, people who imagine that their "Game that shall not be named" / EvE / STO / Champs... whatever, have a personality are a wee bit wonko IMO.
Don't look silly... Don't call it the "Z-Store/Zen Store"...
Let me put the rumors to rest: it's definitely still the C-Store (Cryptic Store) It just takes ZEN.
