What is the Starfleet regulation regarding pregnant Captains?

doubleohninedoubleohnine Member Posts: 818 Arc User
Came across this Captain tonight on Bajor, obviously very near full term. Of all the role playing and whacky outfit combos Ive seen in 6 years playing this game, shes the first pregnant captain Ive ever come across, and it made me chuckle. I PMd the player to ask if the captain was pregnant, and got no response. Normally you dont ask such things in real life, but I figured in make believe STO world, it was ok, lol. Perhaps that player is pregnant in real life.

I did that with a Foundry NPC once.

I'm pretty sure they would say Light Duties only... B)

Maternity Leave until they can return to duty most likely

I would assume so long as the captain was fit for duty and the hormones were not affecting her judgement then there would be no issues. It's all down to her and her doctor.

There's not exactly many cases to go by, is there? Certainly with lower ranking officers there appears to be no interference with their duties, but never with the commanding officer.

      Station-side duty, I'm guessing.

Well they kept Naomi's mom on active duty, of course they didn't have a real choice about that. Kira didn't really take leave either but she isn't Starfleet. Then too Crusher & B'lanna were both RL pregnant (as was Kira) and kept on working.

Gates McFadden didn't. She took a break for Season 2 while she was pregnant (as opposed to Denise Crosby whose character was just flat-out killed). Crusher has only been present once as far as we know (with Wesley) and that was completely off-screen. B'Ellana in-universe is the same case as Ensign Wildman in that Voyager was stranded - they couldn't go anywhere.

I've got it in my head for the time-skip at the end of my ULC 27 piece that Eleya took a promotion to admiral and gave up command of her ship when she and Gaarra decided to start a family in the mid-2410s, just because a starship really isn't the best place for responsible parents to try to raise children. Even the TNG writers themselves decided that having children aboard the Enterprise was a dumb idea in hindsight.

Cara takes time out after the events of The Way We Weren't, then after her maternity leave, returns to the academy, leaving her brother-husband and cousin-wife to primarily raise her son. This is why she graduates a year later with a new circle of friends ;)

I figured that after the losses at Wolf 359, and during the Dominion War, public opinion strangely changed about civilians wanting to be on board starships ;) I put reference in ULC (I think) 26, where Jedda and Cameron are talking about it, and Jedda says that Command changed the policy due to public opinion B)

Well... if my STO character ever gets pregnant... they'd have to take a crowbar to pry her out of the Captain's Chair, or assign the Lexington to patrol duties. She'd take maternity leave... probably at gunpoint from her own CMO.

Summary execution before the infection spreads and a fiery death of their ship to make sure.

Considering what the Galaxy Class was "supposed" to be about - long term peaceful exploration (10 year mission?) at extreme ranges (where shore leave, resupply, etc. were to be minimal) - then the thought of having the entire family on-ship would have worked out immensely.

However, when they either power-creeped themselves into a hole, or otherwise realized that Starfleet's "exploration radius" is a lot smaller (ie, you don't need your ship to stay away from friendly shores and shore leaves for 10 years) and started writing a lot of combat into the show (and skimped on blowing budget for a lot of saucer separation segments), the concept of having the whole family along for the war suddenly didn't quite "fit" in.
Detecting big-time "anti-old-school" bias here. NX? Lobi. TOS/TMP Connie? Super-promotion-box. (aka the two hardest ways to get ships) Excelsior & all 3 TNG "big hero" ships? C-Store. Please Equalize...

I believe the Galaxy class was meant to have a service lifespan of 100 years or so. Also consider the times. It was a time of peace, and the Galaxy class had facilities most other ships did not have due to being a long range Explorer.

it would really be up to the CMO on wether she was fit for duty. If she wasnt fit theres the first officer that can take over till after the pregnancy, but I dont think the captain would be relieved at all untill near the end of the pregnancy, and she should always wear her seatbelt. :P

Seatbelt ? When did starships get seatbelts ?

Or have they always had them but no one ever actually wears them /

My guess it is up to the rules and regulations of Starfleet with supervision by medical personnel and relegated to more dirtside stations. However, ship classes like the Galaxy, Ambassador, and the modern Mirandas probably have a more desk job-esque duty for a pregnant crewmember.
    • galattgalatt Member Posts: 708 Arc User
Based on the two times my wife has been pregnant, the crew would have to learn to ignore certain orders like "I hate everyone, kill everything that comes into range", "Security, kill all males onboard so they can never do this to anyone else again" "Why does nothing fit, have the ships tailor disciplined at once"

Hold your horses, would want more evidence than that, could be perfectly innocent, there is such a thing as pregnant women so why not in STO without it having to be some kind of convoluted ERP thing? (Haven't been to Bajor lately so couldn't say what else is going on there.)

I imagine Star Fleet would allow maternity leave.

IMO having families onboard ship was one of the dumbest things to do. Even if the Galaxy class was built at a time of peace space is still a dangerous place to be in. You'll never know when the holodeck will go crazy and try to take over the ship or some giant space creature decides to eat planets or absorb all energy or space Apollo wants to make humans worship him again.
      Your pain runs deep.
Let us explore it... together. Each man hides a secret pain. It must be exposed and reckoned with. It must be dragged from the darkness and forced into the light. Share your pain. Share your pain with me... and gain strength from the sharing.

Space is Disease and Danger wrapped in Darkness and Silence.

Anyways... Par for the course for a Starfleet Officer. ;) As Janeway once said... "Weird is what we do."

My guess is Starfleet regulations require pregnant women to go on maternity leave... however, they tend to ignore it and instead try to punch Undine with their fists.

In the 23rd century, they were at least required to change outfits because the uniform would become way too short on the bottom.

Actually... Starfleet does have Maternity variants as late as the 2370s.
