So after playing the mission several times on Tribble I am wondering if Admiral Garrett is an ancestor of Rachel Garrett, Captain of the Enterprise C in the Prime Timeline. I also notice from the dialog that the Kelvin Timeline Starfleet is aware at least of the existence of alternate timelines, if not necessarily the Prime Timeline specifically.
It would make sense. The Enterprise crew (ok, just Spock) in the 2009 movie theorized that their current situation would not have happened if the Narada had not destroyed the Kelvin, and since that happened as a result of time travel, it stands to reason that it didn't happen "the last time around."
Your father was captain of a starship for twelve minutes. He saved 800 lives, including your mother's, and yours.

Pretty much. I'm sure that was all in Kirk and Spock's report to Starfleet and we also know that Section 31 immediately began buffing up for attacks and utilizing everything in their arsenal in order to prepare for when, as Marcus said 'The next thing comes at us.'. In addition to that, if you go by the IDW Star Trek comics that continue past the movies they're at least aware of a couple of Alternate Realities including the Prime Reality thanks to Q and their own version of the Mirror Universe.
