In this purely hypothetical and totes not actually real situation, they'll be in a lockbox. There would possibly therefore be much forum rage.
The issue here is that the information is not official in any way as its not been posted by Cryptic yet and how it arrived by the OP is through less legitimate means. the Forum rage is about the fact it was datamined and plastered all over the forum and left to set, no one likes a spoiler, especially one who does it on purpose. if it is true or not is irreverent at this point.
T6 Miranda Hero Ship FTW. Been around since Dec 2010 on STO and bought LTS in Apr 2013 for STO.
to bad they keeping to the idea of selling more junk that the main player don't like that know startrek
What qualifies as "knowing Star Trek" though? Someone who got started with the Original Series? Someone who started with TNG?
What about DS9? Voyager? Enterprise? The reboot movies?
Saying things like "knowing Star Trek" or saying something is or isn't Star Trek is subjective. For a new fan, they may have gotten exposed to Star Trek through the Reboot movies. Someone else may have started out watching Enterprise.
Part of me naively likes to imagine that someone at Cryptic actually has some integrity and care about the Star Trek IP, and realizes that introducing JJ Trek ships is stupid and nonsensical and just a shameless cash grab.
And then I remember that we're talking about Cryptic, and if they could get the licenses I'm sure they'd be shoving in Star Destroyers and Battlestars and Ponies as long as they thought it was going to get them some money.
It can happen because lawyers get paid to work out deals. It can happen because even though Paramount and CBS are separate entities and have thus far had a very strict legal framework for assets STO is allowed to use, it does not mean that they can't reverse their decision if the right legal paperwork is written up and signed off on.
It is entirely possible that STO could have access to the JJ Trek universe if for no other reason than CBS Studios and Paramount decided it was okay to do it now.
It is also possible it could have some sort of time-limited moratorium, similar to no-compete clauses (like when Conan O'Brien was legally prohibited from appearing on TV for a year after Jay Leno backstabbed him), because of contract obligations.
It is possible that the 2009 Star Trek assets were prohibited from being used by STO for some period of time, but those time limits are now expired.
The truth is, none of us know what the legal paperwork looks like, but it's certainly possible. Just like it's possible we'll get an end-game Connie. People are always capable of changing their minds.
Personally, I think it would be absolutely hilarious to have an end-game Connie, except that the end-game Connie is from the JJ Trek universe. The forum responses alone would make AoY the best expansion ever for me, and I'd love it.
If I were to speculate, it would be on PWE warming up to the idea of sharing their profits with other entities. They've shown a willingness to cut Microsoft and Sony in on their profits, so it wouldn't surprise me if they offered Paramount a similar deal, and Paramount said yes.
It can't be that easy though can it?
That someone somewhere changed their mind? That negotiations happened? That goes against every thread I've read on this topic for years and years.
I just can't believe it's as easy as: "Well we changed our minds and now we want to make these ships available."
That's so far fetched. I can't suspend my disbelief. It goes way beyond immersion breaking. That's completely anti-Cryptic. I won't believe it until I see something real and concrete from Trendy or Taco or Geko or ... well someone official.
Until then, I just can't wrap my brain around even the thought or idea or whisper that movie assets would ever make an appearance in Star Trek Online. THOUSANDS of posters have assured me that it wasn't possible.
