if its going to be a TOS themed mini galaxy separate from the 25th century, then everything for the most part is likely to be as authentic as possible except when it comes to the time travelling part.
to play off your examples it would be the empire verse rebellion as it should be for the most part, but towards the end the first order arrives with Kylo Ren on board the flag ship as unstable as ever.
If that's the case I'd be fine with it. If, however, we have "time travel" remarks at every corner reminding us that we really are from the future or we, as "temporal agent" characters fight Na'Kuhl in every old episode we play (most likely the TOS themed episodes we already have) it doesn't strike me as particularily authentic.

although I agree this is not what I would have liked to see in the way of new content I will make a TOS character if only so I can play the story line and get the account rewards, where I will go with the TOS character after the event remains to be seen.
When I think about everything we've been through together,
maybe it's not the destination that matters, maybe it's the journey,
and if that journey takes a little longer,
so we can do something we all believe in,
I can't think of any place I'd rather be or any people I'd rather be with.
Most people are disappointed when they don't get what they want.
I'm disappointed about many things, but I don't start a thread about each and every one of them. Yes the new expansion is TOS related and has most likely been under development for a very long time. Complaining is not going to change the situation.
All I have to say is after the big "announcement" I updated two other games on my PC that aren't sto. Good job finding a way to milk the baby boomers for everything their nostalgia will pay up for, but meh and thanks for your time...
Tbh im glad they went this direction instead of cardassians, now i want a cardi faction like veryone else but, look how cryptic has treated the roms and klinks, do you really want a half hearted faux faction that is just going to be ignored time and again?
The Cardassians may come in the next, a DS9 era, Expansion. See my speculation in the link below of where STO is heading.
'Perhaps they are going to emulate CBS plans for the new show in that each season will be its own 'arc' so to speak. One season could be from 'X' era or just after 'X' era. The next one 'Y' era.
Here we have TOS Expansion, then the next Expansion is an NX era one, etc. They keep up some sort of overarching Temporal theme, but we get to play in varied eras with another set of Missions. More material to draw from to keep stuff sort of 'fresh'.
'But to be logical is not to be right', and 'nothing' on God's earth could ever 'make it' right!'

'As l speak now, the words are forming in my head.
l don't know.
l really don't know what l'm about to say, except l have a feeling about it.
That l must repeat the words that come without my knowledge.'
I really thought this wasn't an expansion and was just another season. Based on the information right now, it really appears to be perhaps just a slight upgrade for a new season and a very downgraded expansion, but that's just based on the info that's here now and could change my opinion on that.
Anyway, I really don't know how I feel about it. At this point, I think they are just trying to grab as many assets as they can from all the shows, to help satisfy as many Star Trek fans as they can. And of course being 50 years, might as well start the celebration to where it all started from. So it makes some sense.
Still astonished that anyone is surprised by this expansion. Granted, like most others that saw the Connie at the end of the video, I thought it was going to be a special episode(s) or something of that nature. But if they were going to do an expansion this year I figured it would somehow tie into TOS (it just makes more sense than a Carddie/Cooperative/or anything else focused expansion). I have seen some post where people are speculating that following expansions may follow the same path (focus on a specific era/show). That would be great too in my opinion. I love Trek...all Trek. And honestly...I just love new content in the game. I will be cautiously optimistic about the execution, but I am excited to see what Cryptic does with this.
I like the idea of it. However I'm more concerned over the story Arc and how will it play into my other characters. This is what part I'm waiting on to see.
Other than seeing if they give us an additional slot to play. My slots are full.
Only part I didn't like about the trailer of it. That is showed mostly Fed stuff. Its like they didn't bother with KDF or Romulans.

The TOS era stuff is explicitly stated to be Starfleet only... so they DIDN'T :P That said they also explicitly state there will be an arc for existing characters of all 3 factions already here in game. Likely in the same vein that the FE or Delta/Iconians were for all 3 factions... Written badly, from a fedrat perspective, and the odd Qa'plap thrown in.
Thanks to those oldies who yearned to play in those older ships of TOS. They got what they wanted thinking there was a market for the old dudes to play TOS. I'm tending to be on the sidelines on this one but aren't MMOs marketed to young players and not Nostalgia ONLINE?
I believe that STO kinda-sorta breaks that particular mold.
There's certainly more than enough Original-Trek-Watching Fans still alive to make this seem like a smart, profitable venture.
And I would imagine that since all of us grew up through the early age of home computing/video gaming, we are probably quite comfortable playing a Trek MMO.

Like the old Star Trek grid game? I remember that one well.
I'm right there with you. I've got nothing against the TOS stuff, but it does seem a bit excessive to make the much anticipated third expansion essentially only TOS content.
You're right. Creating all TOS content for the 50th anniversary celebration of TOS is crazy!
Excessive in making the much anticipated third expansion essentially only TOS.
Like I said, I get having a special event, or a featured episode or two. But the whole expansion?
I'm just bummed because I've been holding out hope for a Cooperative faction for a few years, failing that it would've been nice to see a Cardassian one like the OP said. But TOS? Ok, sure. I'm glad the TOS fans are getting an entire expansion, it still stings everyone who's been patiently calling for a Cardassian or Cooperative expansion.
But why? While I'll grant that Elim Garak was an excellent character, overall the Cardassians were just what happens when a Klingon and a Romulan mate. Obsidian Order = Tal Shiar Lite.
No, I just don't see it. What STO doesn't need right now is a third faction claiming that the Feds get everything and they get nothing.

The exact same thing can be said for a DS9/Cardassian/Dominion "expansion".
It's the 50th anniversary of Star Trek, which all started with TOS. Players should have expected as much.
Players should have expected an entire TOS FED expansion with this anniversary? LOL no. That's closer to clairvoyance than obvious expectation.
Thanks to those oldies who yearned to play in those older ships of TOS. They got what they wanted thinking there was a market for the old dudes to play TOS. I'm tending to be on the sidelines on this one but aren't MMOs marketed to young players and not Nostalgia ONLINE?
Gamers under age 35 are the minority.
I'm a gamer, have been all my life, from board based war-games, miniatures, to the early computer arcade games. A ton of us 'Oldies" played games, oversaw the the growth of computer games, and work(ed) in the industry.
Gamers come in all sorts, from all social and economic strata. They are both male and females well. ("Old dudes" - lol). The one thing us 'Oldies' may have more of though than probably most 'youngsters' is disposable income and vast quantities of free time. The number of decrepit wrinkled up ancients surrounding you in your games would probably surprise you. Be careful in game, your gran might be flying besides you!
This thread tickles me. 50th anniversary of Star Trek launching and you all who are disappointed though you were getting something besides a TOS expansion.
Come on now people, let's get some perspective and a touch of reality. I'd of been more shocked if this expansion HADN'T been TOS related.

could also be done in a timelines expansion like the TOS version. only that its based back in the 25th century and the cardassians will have a hand in alpha/beta quadrant politics specifically with the dominion considering how things went almost 40 years earlier. if the cardassians can disarm a threat of dominion invasion and predisposition to observing the wormhole and being ready to strike out, then there could be hope for this galactic union.
T6 Miranda Hero Ship FTW. Been around since Dec 2010 on STO and bought LTS in Apr 2013 for STO.
I'm not a fan of TOS and I hate the TOS aesthetic. 90% of the show was utter garbage so hopefully they only hit the high notes in their story. I'm not interested in rolling yet another toon just to play content. And now the business model is to make the Delta Recruit event, except just for Feds, into an expansion... just sad really.
I think they greatly overestimate the appeal of the TOS era to the entire fan base. Only a portion of the crowd has nostalgia blinders on for that show, so unless they put some major power items into the pack, I think I'll be holding onto my Zen. The only thing that I am interested in on face value is the Temporal Sci T6 ship.
As long as they don't lock the story content behind the paywall - which would be unprecedented - I'll just go about my normal business. Now if they made a TNG or DS9 expansion, I'd be all over that.
You do realize if it wasn't for the TOS fan base TNG,VOY,DS9,ENT, ALL the films both TOS,TNG and JJ VERSE and this game NEVER WOULD EXISIT. You are the one underestimating the fan base.
After seeing the announcement(s), I honestly have no desire to log in now, much less when this steaming pile hits.
I get that they want to force everyone to play FEDs, but that makes most of us who don't want to....either dig our heels in more and get increasingly bitter about it, or just say "never mind," and game elsewhere.
And, to think, at one point, I thought "they screwed KDF/ROMs again" was an exaggeration, or just silliness.
So fine really nobody cares if you leave. Pulling a tantrum will not fix anything.
After seeing the announcement(s), I honestly have no desire to log in now, much less when this steaming pile hits.
I'm guessing that it's ridiculous and demeaning attitudes such as this are the reason why the dev's don't post much in here any more.
The expansion is not even out, and yet you are calling it a 'steaming pile'. Besides being pointlessly negative for the sake of it, such statements don't even make logical sense.

I'm not sure you understand what a tantrum is. Expressing displeasure =/= tantrum. Why is it that people HAVE to like what is announced? Sycophancy is an undesirable trait to display.
@sinn74 No you're throwing a tantrum. Expressing displeasure would of been along the lines of "I don't agree with where they are going with this expansion, I think it's a bad idea". That's expressing displeasure. You on the other hand calling a steaming pile without even trying the content out. That my friend is throwing a tantrum.

All the information we got so far is one announcement and two ship packs. At least wait till you know more about what they have planned before you dismiss it entirely.

Fine by me and more than fine with Cryptic I'm sure. I won't be buying anything from this but I sure appreciate others financing the game for me.
