I seem to be getting a new issue where the game is super laggy (almost like my machine is trying to catch up with the game) and it makes it unplayable.
Every time it hangs the system fan pulsates into action (laptop - HP Envy with nvidiagfx card).
I dunno what the problem is or why its happening now and not yesterday etc... any bright ideas welcome as missing out on the breahh event now.

You should use a program like HWMonitor to check the CPU and GPU temps. Generally speaking 80c or less is fine, 90c or more is a concern.

Out of interest what OS are you running? If windows 10 check out some of the other crash/lag threads for some ideas which may help.
Firstly, you shouldn't hijack threads with unrelated issues as this can easily result in the original problem not being addressed.
Secondly - MAC access is being discontinued, you need to download a windows emulator - Google is your friend!!!
There is an existing thread in the News section dealing with this http://www.arcgames.com/en/forums/startrekonline/#/discussion/1211294/mac-closure-notice with a link to WINE
I fairly recently noticed my laptop constantly slowing down to .90Ghz. I downloaded Techpowerup's utilility ThrottleStop and monitored my CPU. I noticed the not only was my CPU no longer turboboosting, but the when the CPU attemptied to run at the base 1.6 Ghz, temps on cores 1 and 3 would spike to 100c and cause the CPU to thermal throttle. after a week or two running various tests to make sure it wasn't anything else, I took the laptop to the local PC repair place that was certified to service Toshiba laptops, and had them do a thermal teardown. They told me that the thermal paste had failed under two of the core contact points. they replaced whatever Toshiba had used with Arctic Silver, and since then my temps, across all cores have remained at or around 60c. before, the thermal teardown, I had trouble doing the final battle in undine zone (the planet killers) and badlands was impossible if there were more than 3 other players present. now I have no problems doing either zone. the tech that did my laptop said I had done a good job at keeping dust out of my machine, and he had seen machines that were far worse. that said, a thermal teardown will include of course cleanout of the dust. I would have probably down the teardown myself, but my research indiacted that on my laptop total disassembly of the laptop was needed to do the thermal teardown. I am one of those people who unpacks something from a box, and then can't get all the stuff to fit back in again. so I felt it was safer to get someone else to do it.

Yeah, taking apart a laptop to replace the thermal paste is not for the faint of heart.
