What? You say that's unfair and undoable? Like duh... that's the reason I challenged you to do it. Any character who is the son of Han Solo will be compared to every other character who is the son of Han Solo. For no other reason but "son of Han Solo". Why? Because fans are jerks like that.

He could have simply become a pilot... Combines both inherited Force sensitivity from Leia, plus unorthodox piloting tricks (drifting to the left) from Han... Would not have necessitated Jedi training, infact, he could even eschew that part of his heritage and not want to be seen as some kind of follower of 'hokey religions'... As I mentioned upthread, the Poe Damaron (sp?) part would fit such a criteria nicely, and would be nothing like Jacen Solo... And again, Deacon Frost was very different in comic and movie incarnations, which would allow 'wiggle room' for any deviation from EU Jacen rather than 'movie Jacen' (I felt that Mal Reynolds was very different in Serenity, to how was in Firefly) So there's no need for a 100% spot on transition of a character, but to say "I'm creating a new character..." and just tack a different name on elements taken from two very recognizable and established characters, as I said, it's just lazy, sloppy writing, which I wouldn't expect from such a big budget/high profile project...

Hehe, comparing chars to the EU is exactly why Disney tossed it. They had two choices, make movies out of books, which probably had licensing issues, or make movies with their own story.
they could have simply come up with completely fresh new characters (which some of them are, such as Finn) to avoid the comparison completely...
This is the part where I challenge you to come up with a definition for "completely fresh" that doesn't preclude them from using concepts like "Han Solo's son", yet still prevents fans from comparing the new character to the guy in the books.
What? You say that's unfair and undoable? Like duh... that's the reason I challenged you to do it. Any character who is the son of Han Solo will be compared to every other character who is the son of Han Solo. For no other reason but "son of Han Solo". Why? Because fans are jerks like that.
Well... maybe Han's son would be a smuggler or a soldier, like his father before him?
I honestly have to agree with Marcus on this one - it's like they took Jacen and decided to have him kill his father instead of Mara Jade.
Well, logically, what would you expect Han's son to be like given that he can use the force and his uncle has decided to teach him? Especially given his mother's history.... Thus he can't be a smuggler/soldier or he won't have Jedi training.
For lack of a better explanation, aside from the turns evil part, it's the natural direction to take the character.
*shrugs* Doesn't have to be Leia's son, too. You didn't specify that in your challenge.
Infinite possibilities have implications that could not be completely understood if you turned this entire universe into a giant supercomputer.

Except for... Why would Han have children with someone else? At the end of episode 6 he was clearly planning to marry Leia. It goes back the story making sense. There were several things said at the end of Ep 6 to the effect of "what next?" If you follow them to their logical conclusions... well, there's certain places that you end up almost automatically.
Luke was planning to rebuild the Jedi Order.
Leia was planning to make the Rebellion into a more powerful political entity instead of a rag-tag group of freedom fighters.
Han was planning to marry Leia... and probably help her with whatever she was doing.
Thus part of the story is already written.
So that leads us to:
Leia has force powers, thus her children(and thus Han's) probably will too.
Uncle Luke is looking for the next generation of Jedi now that Yoda and Obi-Wan are dead, and his nephew fits the bill. (assuming he has a nephew and not a niece)
3. That relic lightsaber "reacted" to her. When we see that lightsaber, it was Anakin Skywalker's, the same that Obi-Wan took at Mustafar, the same one that Obi-Wan gave to Luke before their departure of Tatooine, the same one that Luke lost with his hand in his first fight with Darth Vader. That lightsaber holds a lot of Skywalker history, both good and bad and I think it's no coincidence it "reacted" to her. When the lightsaber was held by Finn, it did nothing. It was simply a weapon. Only when Rey touched it did it "react."
The way I understood that was that, since Luke had used the lightsaber, she was seeing Luke's memories through the Force. It doesn't necessarily mean that she's connected to him, just that the saber is. It's probably not canon anymore, but I'm pretty sure there were other Jedi who could do stuff like that. And it didn't work for Finn because, from what we've seen, Finn doesn't seem to be Force sensitive.

It was a strange sequence, because it was a combination of HER memories(being left on Jakku) *and* Luke's(that scene of him kneeling with R2. Possibly also Kylo Ren's(the scene of him standing with his knights. Either way, the scene of her being left on Jakku show that she was not simply seeing Luke's memories.
Hmm... I wonder... is maybe Rey's parentage being kept secret by the producers because she's the descendant of someone like Palpatine or Dooku? *goes looking for pics*
Hunh.. here's an interesting one.. apparently that thing on the end of her staff looks like a broken light saber...
Hmm... I wonder... is maybe Rey's parentage being kept secret by the producers because she's the descendant of someone like Palpatine or Dooku?
I think Luke is the most *likely* candidate, and I think they will say he used the Force to erase/block her memories. But what you mentioned is definitely possible. If it was going to be one of those two, I think they would be more likely to go with Palpatine than directly reference the prequels
I'm wondering if Rey could have been a survivor of the massacre of the Jedi by Ren. Luke collects her and drops her off on Jakku to keep her hidden. I prefer this to the numerous theories that she's Luke's or Han's child as that would involve abandoning her. At least when Luke was abandoned he had Obi-Wan nearby.
I don't think so. Rey had no knowledge or training in the use of the Force. If anything, I believe her to be a Skywalker. Some of this may be a stretch, mind you

Luke seems TOO obvious really. It's exactly what people would be most curious about. They show us Han's son, thus fans automatically want to see Luke's kids, and jump to the idea that Rey is his daughter. BUT the writers DON'T tell us in this movie who her parents are. If it was as simple as Luke.... It seems likely that either they're going to have an elaborate explanation coming, or they'd have put it in the first movie.

I like Luke is the most *likely* candidate, and I think they will say he used the Force to erase/block her memories. But what you mentioned is definitely possible. If it was going to be one of those two, I think they would be more likely to go with Palpatine than directly reference the prequels
Luke seems TOO obvious really.
Yep, which them seem to like. Saving the Kylo reveal for when he and Han actually met on the bridge would have been a shocker(for many), but instead they had Snoke spoil it much earlier in the movie. So yeah, they seem to like being obvious.
The Force is strong in my family. My father has it. I have it. My sister has it. You have that power too.
Key words highlighted. This was originally a quote from ROTJ, but in that movie it ended with the "my sister" part. That last part is new.
Interestingly... the delivery doesn't give much indication of who he's talking to. Which makes it a bit LOT more vague. Sister + you = Kylo.
It definitely doesn't reveal who he's talking about. However, it sounds like a statement that would be made to try to convince someone to train their power, not someone who has already trained and knows they are strong in the Force.
Whoops, looks like I need to correct something I said before. Apparently all of what he said in that quote was from ROTJ, so that last part isn't new. However, I still think that including it in that trailer suggests there is someone else in his family he is trying to convince to train, and I don't think it's Kylo at this point.

Who did he say it to in RotJ?
It was all to Leia, just not in that order. Here is what I found:
Leia: Luke, don't talk that way! You have a power I don't understand and could never have.
Luke: You're wrong, Leia. You have that power too. In time you'll learn to use it as I have. The Force is strong in my family. My father has it. I have it and... [looks directly at Leia] My sister has it. [waits for the words to sink in] Yes. It's you, Leia.
I think they will end up showing that Rey is just a 'natural' with the Force, like a savant.
(like they are showing Ezra to be in REBELS)
I'm just not totally convinced at this point that she will end up being Luke's daughter, it's just wayyy to obvious in my mind.
JJ loves his surprises and I can't imagine him being that overt with something that is probably going to be a REALLY BIG REVEAL in Episode VIII.
It seems to me that he's purposely steering everybody to believe she is.

A thought I had:
What if she is learning so quickly because of how the Force was brought into balance by Anakin? During the original and prequel trilogies, the Force was being dominated by Darth Sidious, resulting in the Jedi's clouded foresight and otherwise diminished power. It seems possible to me that Anakin's Chosen One thing may have "cleared the air" for the light side.
Just my theory though.
Your father was captain of a starship for twelve minutes. He saved 800 lives, including your mother's, and yours.

The entire concept of "chosen one" and "balance" was only talked about in the prequels. It was never mentioned at all in the original trilogy. While the prequels are obviously canon, I think Disney is pretty much going to ignore them. They aren't going to contradict them, but I doubt they are going to be referencing them going forward. But we'll see.
Also, "bringing balance to the force" loses any real meaning when you have dark force users running the show again in the very next movie. It kind of defeats the purpose of having a chosen one when what he accomplished gets completely undone so easily. That is actually why Lucas had not planned on going past ROTJ, although that is a moot point now.
The way Lucas explained it some time ago was that "balance" was not about both sides being equal like a scale, but about the Force being at a "natural" state. If your body gets sick you could say it has become "unbalanced", and the dark side is an unnatural use of the force; a cancer. So Lucas definition of balance is NO dark siders. But again, this whole "balance" thing came from the prequels, and he had kind of lost his marbles by that time.
After seen The Force Awakens, my mind keeps going back to ''The Force Trilogy'' from the Clone Wars.
I can't help to see Kylo and Rey as the Son and Daugther from Mortis. Kylo is exactly like the Son, power hungry, rutless, and very immature. Rey on the other hand, is much more focused, calm and peaceful even in the heat of battle.
If Anakin did not bring balance to the Force by replacing the Father, the Force might just have found a way to balance itself out in a new generation.
As for Han's death, I'm still shocked but not unhappy about the way is was done. Han was never overly attached to anyone, even Leia. In the end, he tried to get is son back by trying to be a father and he paid the price for not having been one before. That also reminds me of Mortis, the Son killing the Father not by his own hand but by is direct actions.
I also saw a parallel to Mortis except that now Anakin is dead and cannot fufil the role of the Father then Luke may have to.

From what I've read, I thought I wouldn't like the pacing.
I didn't, but after so long since RotJ I'll accept it as a proverbial kickstart.
There are 2 things I definitely didn't like;
1) It didn't feel like SW.
Maybe it should have focused more on the backstory of the "new guys" and the current state of the Republic/First Order for this first movie.
Sort of how Reach should have been the first Halo game.
2) Han being killed off.
I think it will hobble the movies going forward.
I'm all for new blood, but his death leaves a massive crater between the original trinity and the new guys.
There would be no SW without L/H/L.
So, I guess that's my verdict.

I probably saw the original Star Wars 100+ times (I'm talking Ep. IV) but I'm talking the original 1977 release (I was 14) before extra titles were added and it was just "Star Wars". On that front I really enjoyed the film because Ep. VII in a lot of ways is a virtual remake of the film in pacing, shot composition, etc; and Abrams basically redoes shots and themes from the original 1977 film in a way that they are instantly recognizable as such; but still 'new'. On that level I was very impressed with the film and all the little nods and Easter eggs I'm sure many missed that were only recognizable to those of us who saw the 1977 Star Wars 100+ times in a theatre (although to be fair, people have to remember the 1977 film stayed in theatres over 2 years, and it was easy to find one playing it where the admission price was $1 to $2 dollars and the next summer my air conditioning was out - sop many times I'd go to the theatre I described par a buck and sit through the film twice in air conditioned comfort).
Script-wise I loved the Han Solo character in the film, and actually even liked the female non-Jedi, but still comes across as the Yoda-like replacement character that's an 'old/ancient' friend of Han's; but as for a lot of the rest, I do have to say so far I'm not impressed with the 'Darth Vader' nor the Palpatine character replacements; and while the beach ball droid (DB-8 or BB-8 was never sure which designation was correct) is still annoying for me, he's not annoying to the level that Jar Jar Binks was. I'm also groaning at the 'StarKiller Planet' weapon (and I'm sure the name was a reference from GL very early drafts of the original Star Wars); but I suppose in the scriptwriter's mind it ain't Star Wars without a planet destroying weapon, but even I had to do 'huh' at the shotgun/FTL capability of it; and somehow I'm sure the First Order will have another converted 'Star Killer' planet by the third film. My only real issue with the setup is that they don't explain the scope of the First Order, or how/why the new Republic is so small/weak that there's a 'Resistance' and not the full force of the Republic countering the First Order (yes, they mention the Republic Fleet; but if the First Order is such a known threat why isn't the Republic Fleet doing something?)
Still, for me this was MUCH better then ANY of the dreadful prequel films - and I actually will probably see it again while it's in the theatres (something I didn't do/nor want to do for any of the SW Prequel Trilogy); but hey, YMMV.

For lack of a better explanation, aside from the turns evil part, it's the natural direction to take the character.

1: I didn't say she was Hans kid, I said I don't think she is.
2: But why does she need to be?
3: She was the only Jedi around. Lightsabres aren't Excaliber, they don't react to the one true king, they're just metal handles with a crystal inside, there's no magic in them. She received the vision because it was the right time or something.
4: So did Ezra. It's not uncommon and not indicative of being anything other than a strong Jedi.
5: So are most, if not all, Jedi, it's the reflexes.
6: Just like Asoka.
7: Just like Asoka.
8: She was abandoned there, it was never her home, just where she was waiting for her family.
Besides she wasn't that young when abandoned, she'd surely remember Luke being her father.

2. For me all my other points just point to that.
3. Lightsabers aren't Excalibur. Then again, Lucas introduced Midichlorians to us in TPM (ducks). Each movie that comes up potentially opens up more things, possibilities. For me, Anakin Skywalker's Lightsaber just has wayyyy too much history to be discounted as merely another weapon, another tool. The way that specific Lightsaber was presented in the movie, like it was some special, magical relic, the fact it is the ONLY Lightsaber having some crazy effects in the entirety of Star Wars movies means a lot. When that Lightsaber was shown in the movie, there was some, "Ooh, Ahh!" reactions in the audience, especially the older fans. They could have had some generic Lightsaber, or something new like Kylo Ren's weapon. But that old Anakin Skywalker Lightsaber was specifically picked out.
4. I do not know who this "Ezra" is. For me, Star Wars is limited to the movies because everything else from the franchise went off the deep end long, long ago.
5. I'll agree with you to a degree but again, too many signs pointing things a certain direction like I said in my post you replied to.
6, 7. Star Wars EU? See point 4.
8. I'll concur that she was abandoned for some reason. I expect that to get clarified early on in the next movie. I feel that her meeting with Luke Skywalker will net us some answers. Regardless if she was abandoned there, that was where she grew up. That is, in essence, "Home." Jakku was the only thing she remembers.
3: Because it's the last lightsabre and she's the last Jedi other than Luke. There's no magic in the sabre, it's all in her.
4: Star Wars: The Clone Wars and Star Wars: Rebels are canon, Ezra is the main character in the latter. It's not the EU it's canon on the same level as the films.

*shrugs* Doesn't have to be Leia's son, too. You didn't specify that in your challenge.
Infinite possibilities have implications that could not be completely understood if you turned this entire universe into a giant supercomputer.
(assuming he has a nephew and not a niece)
soo... yeah.
My character Tsin'xing
