Do DEV'S play the game personally?

I'm genuinely curious if they have personal accounts they use in their off time or if they rather not even think about the game when not on the clock. Lol

So, do you guys have secret private accounts? Do you play often? What's your favorites ship class or build? Do you join fleets?

Thanks!

Some do, some don't. Those that do would play on personal accounts unless they are doing some type of event or promotional activity and wouldn't tell you who they are on their personal accounts for various reasons.

Many play regularly, as pointed out by Nagus, under personal accounts. It avoids the flood of friend requests. But I would imagine after working all day on X, they might want to play Y to relax.

There is something to be said about experiencing something that took a great deal of personal effort to produce, being used in a larger finished product, as a regular member of the playerbase.

It's probably the same feeling musicians get when they listen to their own bands' songs, or actors get when they watch films or television shows in which they had roles.

Then again, I'm sure there are some developers who refuse to play games they've worked on for any purpose other than QA.

I've heard a lot of performers tend to criticize their own work when watching it. Nancy McKeon, at one point in her life, avoided watching herself because she was reminded of things she didn't like about herself.

The last time I saw someone that worked at Cryptic actually play the game (not test something) it was Brandon. It was awesome seeing him in Ker'rat or in a random PvP match. You don't see that EVER anymore.

I'm curious what Trendy's toon looked like, can you describe it, her i presume? Faction, species, costume and all that? I'm curious what she chose to represent herself.

Trendy actually uses an Alien character with black skin and those weird bone spikes coming out of her head.

I can confirm this after seeing her toon on ESD one time maybe a month ago now or more.

My Delta Recruit has that kind of look. Very dark skin and large bone crown, but she has a pink ponytail.

I could tell you about some of the epic times I had with Dan Stahl before Season 5 but I don't want to ruin my own fun.

I remember seeing one once, I can't remember who or where. I think it was in one of the battlezones. I didn't bother saying anything, because I'm sure they get bothered by enough players.

Taco was chatting it up in ESD chat one night, I noticed I was in the same instance, so I went and sat down in one of the lounges with him. It only now occurred to me to ask if he chose that spot because of something he designed. Should have asked...

Chatting it up in ESD which I've seen plenty of devs do does not constitute playing the game. They usually log in after patches that add features to get a quick sense of whether there are any bugs people are complaining about.

Trendy does this often. So does Taco. It's cool. They try and answer questions as best they can, but they get flooded with non stop questions.

As far as playing the game, not sure how much game time they put in.

Every dev has a private account. These are lifetime accounts, and we get special dev packs that unlock all of the new shinies without having to use lockbox keys and such. But these accounts don't use Dev handles, won't show up as pink, and would look just like anyone else you're playing with. Chances are, the guy that screwed up your last ISA run, was probably me. Many Devs play using these private accounts. I have done so many times, though admittedly, my play slowed more recently.

In addition, some Devs have Dev accounts. These are the accounts you see dressed in Pink, chatting with you in ESD, or joining in events after a launch. These are not accounts we really play with much, they're just public faces.

I will say for my part, I have always had trouble playing any games I've worked on. I'm mostly an explorational gamer. I enjoy discovering the world within the game, figuring out where things are, how everything connects, etc. It is very difficult to explore spaces you have built yourself. Even beyond the exploration aspect, there's a lot lost to me through "knowing how the sausage is made." That is to say, it's difficult to enjoy a game when you know how it was all made, who wrote the lines, put that spawn there, etc. Even worse when you spot errors. Rather than running past that wonky triangle, or dismissing that typo, every error is glaring you in the face the whole time. At least for me.

So, yes. Many devs play. When they play, they are probably playing privately.

You don't see us, because we play on our own, private accounts.

I built most of ESD's interior, but when I'm dressed in pink, I hang out there because it's the busiest hub of activity. I do go off to DS9, Drozana, First City once in a while, but generally I ESD is my main public space.

I have my private personal account and my dev account, similar to what Taco mentioned. I tend to be on once a day.

Also yes, my dev character is a black alien with bone spikes. My personal account's main looks very different. :P

Heh, well look at that, I got my answer. :) Well, sort of. I didn't actually mean ESD in general, I know you designed it. What specifically I was wondering was if you sat where you did to best admire a particular aspect. Clarifying not do much to get a better answer as to let you know I know you designed it (it was the reason the question occurred to me) and think you did an awesome job, and wondered what little detail I might have been missing out on that you were admiring. Really, you probably picked it because it was out of the way. ;P

Well thanks guys it's nice to know this!

I suppose as an extension, do you interact heavily with the player base like in fleets or do you dev's have your own private fleet?

I can vouch for Tacofang's outlook on 'exploration'. Even though a lot of people (including me) ask for more 'exploration' in the game, remember that for most of us, *everything* in the game is somewhat new, different, something to be explored. When you and your co-workers produced it, you lose a ton of that.

It's sort of like, I have fun cooking for other people, and I *love* when other people cook for me. But cooking for myself? Not interesting at all. I make a sandwich and I'm done. :)

I generally play every day, with both my Fed Vulcan Sci captain and my KDF Gorn Engineering captain. (I also have some Romulans, of course.)
