As anyone should truly know, beauty is in the eye of the beholder, simple fact of that matter. To me, this is one of the cooler looking Starfleet ships yet cause it's much more unique and not just another typical relic of past designs saucer with engines strapped on, big, looks tough, It's the super star destroyer of the federation I've been wanting. Also like that it's science heavy, so glad they decided to give it that focus as anything else would be so same ol'.
As the old saying goes you can't please all the people all the time. So OP if you don't like it don't buy it and stop griefing those of us who like the ship and stfu.
Because it has to be the most awful design I've seen in the game to date.
Hmm, please don't give Cryptic a reason not to ask the playerbase for their feedback any more. This is what the ppl voted for. And it doesn't look half-bad, IMHO.

Agreed - whilst I don't love the design (definitely wasn't my first choice) I don't hate it either, and it wasn't enough to put me off buying it. Still don't like the aft-view much, but I can live with it.
And so far as using it in-game is concerned, I'm really quite enjoying it.
I agree it was a good gesture on their part to make us part of even that small part of the designing of the ship, yet i hope in the future we get more of an ability to put forth our view-point an suggestions for ships. even if it is voting on pre-done boff layouts, specs that would be on the ship or even spec pairings, additional parts, features, and such. Many people on the forums had alot of ideas an input that could have made the ship much more unique an interesting. Even if it were a concept contest in which you put forth a concept for a new ship, such as a feature or role of the ship with a small description that the player-base would vote on. After which over the course of the year the idea an concept is refined an showcased by the devs (with imput from players) to the players as a year-long project to make a fully player created ship, with some opptions being put forth for the players to vote on or even give input to create ideas an features for the ship to have.
Well I agree with most of that except the design of the decks are for deployment speed not acceleration. It's to allow for taking off and docking to be undertaken simultaneously.
I'm also the last person to try and equate anything from Starfleet with the US military in any way .
Incidentally, I agree it looks nothing like a traditional Starfleet ship, you know, the ones that look like, umm, I don't know? Like the Daedalus or Olympic (with their globe 'saucers'), Norway, Akira, and Steamrunners (with their catamaran hull), the Novas and Intrepids (with their triangular 'saucers'), NX, Constellation, Centaur, Challenger or Cheyenne (no secondary hull), Sovereign (no neck), Excelsior (bloody ugly), The Defiant (which looks as far away from Starfleet designs that it makes the Jupiter look like the Constitution).
When people talk about the design language of Starfleet ship, what they mean is the Constitution, Ambassador, and Galaxy. No others. There's no more ships that match the silhouette of those three in any way other than the superficial (maybe the Excelsior and oddly the Springfield)
I still don't see why the long hull is better for that, it works on a saucer the same way, you can launch at one side and retreive on the other end and still keep a more extraordinary look
It is true that not all Starfleet ships are connies and I never said they have to. But I like the designs resembling the saucer setup, that's all. The more triangle shaped ships look less and less recognizable in my opinion and that's simply a shame because simply everyone somehow recognizes the saucer-ships as Star Trek whereas the modern designs simply could fit in anywhere. Just a personal preferences of style. I love for example how Axanar uses their own designs (which are even inspired by JJ) but let them look so "organic" - they are all basically flying saucers with some sort of appendix. I like that, maybe because it's a dying off design and modern starship design, even in Star Trek, all try to imitate jetfighter aerodynamics. I like the Katamaran-style, though.
Starfleet leaves a lot of room for different styles, actually, since all members are involved. I very much love a particular design of an Oddyssey-esque ship but with Vulcan warp nacelles (aka "the ring") which was a alternate design for the oddy contest I think. I'd love to see that as a T6 refit, just so you get the illusion that all of those designs are found in Starfleet. A Tellarite "block engine" could also work on some ships to show some influence.
In the end this all is a matter of taste, one loves this the other loves that. I personally think it's a shame designs get so streamlined that you sometimes can just take one and put it into any kind of show and it would look okay-ish. Diversity instead of uniformity.

I disagree, I adore the ships aesthetics.
Man I wish we could have voted on the Boff and Console layout too, though.
Why not have made a HUGE deal out this thing...instead of being with their debatably questionable designs, give us a choice of saucer...round, pointed, lumpy. A choice of nacelle, a choice of deflector, etc and then give us the choice of seating, making for a truly bespoke and original ship. And once all of those components are chosen, they then create the new design. They wasted so much time on near-completed ships and have now discarded them...or put them to one side to bring back later, most likely.
Ya know? Considering it is the first time they've done something like this, the ship did not turn out all bad. It has Frigate pets. Something the Blue Side has wanted since the vo'Quv was released. I am sure they learned a few things. So the next time they do this, (Our Dev Team won Gold, Silver and Bronze, all at the same time, at the Copy/Pasta Olympics) it will have more features and be better done.
A six year old boy and his starship. Living the dream.
You can't argue that circle bit is in any way reminiscent of the saucer on any other Federation ship? What about all the ones with oval, triangle, spherical, or whatever saucers? There barely is a Starfleet design language, every part of the ships can be found else where (The T'liss could be a Federation ship, the nacelles on the Vor'Cha are Federation style). Ignoring the Jupiter's saucer, what's wrong with the pylons, nacelles, hull materials and embalms, thrusters and impulse engines etc.?
Circle->Circle, it's an incredibly easy point to argue. I'm not saying it IS a saucer but it is absolutely reminiscent of a saucer. See. design language. Things can be subtly implied. That disc is almost certainly there to reinforce the fact that the Defiant is a Starfleet vessel through common visual imagry. Nothing like that (apart from nacelle color and cut outs) can be so readily identified on the Omega Jupiter model.
Thanks also for implying the point that extended nacelle on struts attached to an irregular geometric form is insufficient by itself to determine a starship's faction (you need other translated components, which your sig demonstrates rather well. Though no two ships are exactly alike you can easily see a common evolutionary theme. Components are added or removed, extruded or reduced, but there's a theme most certainly there. You can even the imagine selection pressures re-configuring the common "anatomy" of those ships to suit their roles.) :P
Remove the nacelles from the Jupiter and you have absolutely nothing at all (besides the paint scheme) linking it to the UFP. It is a bland ship, it could fit many places in the ST universe with some relatively minor tweaks (as demonstrated above). We could have had better (ie. something better suited to the FED or alternatively a multi-faction release that [with a few visual tweaks] played off of the poorly defined identity of the Jupiter to provide a valuable service to KDF/RR c-store ship selection.)
Replace that circle and there's nothing to suggest the Defiant is Starfleet either. Hell, even with it, it shares nothing in common with any other design.
Looking at the Jupiter in more detail this morning I've come to the conclusion that it's even more Starfleet than I previously thought. Compare the side on view with the Vesta, other than the secondary hull being replaced with a mirrored saucer, it very similar. That deflector on the saucer rim, look at the NX. The pylons and nacelles are very similar to the Vesta as well.
The top view is unusual certainly, but no more so than comparing the Norway to the Galaxy.
I still don't see why the long hull is better for that, it works on a saucer the same way, you can launch at one side and retreive on the other end and still keep a more extraordinary look
I assume it's for reasons of space and packing, circles are inefficient for packing, so much wasted space.

It's just how it goes, it's evolution. Te ships are becoming more and more specialised into the war era of DS9 and VOY. All the TNG era ships (Ambassadors, Galaxys, Nebulas, New Orleans, Niagra, Freedom, Challenger, Cheyenne, and Springfield, but not the Olympic) share common features across all of them, same nacelles, and saucers etc. They only differed in their configuration.
By the time of DS9 the ships were specialised and shared little with each other. The Intrepid had its folding pylons (presumably for the subspace damaging thing), the Prometheus was shaped for its attack mode, the Defiant had it's small profile and compact design.
Come 2409/2410 and the Iconian war the ships are continuing that trend, the Jupiter is a case in point.

It would't make much sense going back to the warp-ring when an episode of ENT pointed out that it didn't allow for rapid course corrections (despite the T'Pau Type retaining it in the TNG era).

I voted for the Alpha, but Omega (Jupiter) was my second choice. But I'm not getting one, because she is mostly science oriented ship which isn't that good for my ENG and/or TAC captains. I would get it if I had a science character or when I create one. However, I must admit that 3/3 weapon slots settings is a bit disappointing. I was hoping at least for 4/3 setup, if not 4/4.

I'd actually see it the other way around. A big saucer like that with bays to all sides would make a very efficient design plus it would even have, as the very first "carrier" in STO, the reasonable space to actually store one of the frigate pets (the fed ones, as they are flat).

At some point it's just a question of style which I find it's a pity they abandoned it. After all, Star Trek wouldn't have to follow any kind of "logic" in the ships, really. But on the other claw I especially think this argument falls apart especially with the Jupiter. Neither in the game nor the treknology around it does it make sense they would design a fighter and frigate carrier in the first place

Not a problem to clawwave that away with a line of "Vulcans don't sleep, their new warp ring is teh TRIBBLE!". I'd really find it refreshing to see at least Vulcan influenced engineering in modern ship design, after all we technically have a Andorian Sabre-variant in the game (old launch model) that shared very little with the original design. I understand and support Starlfeet's take on standardization, but STO reached a point where such a design would be plausible and a welcome addition.

Having the bays on the side would protect the ships inside. In the TV shows ships tend to fight head on, so having the opening of the hangar facing the main fire-point would't make much sense.

Well, yes, I'm not keen on fighters in the first place but they're canon, but I did always assume they just came in the Galaxys rather then dedicated carriers (beside the Shelly and Curry).

Yeah, it's an ancient discussion in the STO forums. Galaxies could be, considering the are warp capable and based on courier ships they can just accompany the fleet like any other ship (Star Wars analogy: X-Wings also didn't have to dock but were hyper-drive capable on their own). Also, Gul Dukat's (I think) confused line about "lightly armed shuttlecraft" suggests to me that their use was far from established but a diversive act of desperation and their effect also never was pointed out (the ruse was compromised almost immedeatly and they played along and what battle scenes we see (considering DS9 also decided shields are superflous how much value they hold is anyone's guess) never show a confirmed kill of attack fighters I tend to be on the side of people saying "nah" to the concept. But as I said, ancient discussion

I agree. I don't like ENT, not much of a secret, but I'm all for all ships available (especially the Tellarite one ). The Ushaan though looks kinda freaky in comparision. The Shi'Kahr (sp? ) doesn't look like a Vulcan ship at all, but it's also one of those launch designs that let you ask what they were thinking. It's one of those weird blocky "Monarch" designs.

Even in DS9 and the CGI battles most ships went face to face. The Galors, Hidikis, D'Ds and Vor'chas even have their most powerful weapons fixed in a forward position.

The Ushaan looks almost exactly like the Sabre but with a really curved front saucer, not really Andorian (or at least not at all like the aeroplane shaped ships from ENT). I do love the Monarch the most out of all the launch era blocky designs and am so glad it's available at endgame with the Gal and Gal-X.
Also, on the bit about the Vulcan warp rings being obsolete, maybe not. Remember the three ringed 25th century Vulcan cruiser Danials shows Archer. Maybe we could get those style rings on a Starfleet ship someday?

They can include that Vulcan ship (a carrier I believe. But with the Negh'Var which is also a "Heavy Carrier", we don't know what it means in Trek terms - but Vulcan fighters don't seem right to me. Because it has to be the most awful design I've seen in the game to date.
Hmm, please don't give Cryptic a reason not to ask the playerbase for their feedback any more. This is what the ppl voted for. And it doesn't look half-bad, IMHO.
No, we voted for the Omega design that suddenly turned into an obvious remodel of the original Jupiter Class.

And how, precisely, does the in-game model differ from the concept art designs?
It didn't "suddenly" turn into a Jupiter remodel. It was already admitted by the devs that the Omega design was clearly made with Jupiter nods to begin with.
Once the Omega design was officially selected, the devs kinda shrugged and said, "well, we might as well call it the Jupiter class".

Yeah i agree that ship actually does look like it would have been a proto-type ship design the federation would have created, maybe developed/created during the Undine conflict to travel thru fludic space.

I disagree, I adore the ships aesthetics.
Man I wish we could have voted on the Boff and Console layout too, though.

I assume there's a reason why the pylons and nacelles design prevailed over the warp-ring or whatever designs in the first place. It would't make much sense going back to the warp-ring when an episode of ENT pointed out that it didn't allow for rapid course corrections (despite the T'Pau Type retaining it in the TNG era).
Norway and Yeager dammit... I still want my Typhoon and Jupiter though.
JJ Trek The Kelvin Timeline is just Trek and it's fully canon... get over it. But I still prefer TAR.

I've got to be honest...I think I prefer absolutely every other design over the Jupiter.

I'd rather they just added all of the ENT and TNG era Vulcan ships (and that Tellarite one if you must ).
I know the Ushaan is named after an Andorian concept but so is the Sha'kar (?), the Miranda variant. They're not really those races designs though, just the name.

Good thinking. Then again, STO really bucks that one up, eh?

Drones, finally, maybe? ) and there's this entry n the oddy competiton that's not perfect of course, but I'd like it as a T6 variant.

Now, that's sexy as hell!
I don't know if I'd give any ship but the Bulwark that verdict, but it looks cool
And I'd appreciate the style being incorporated into modern starfleet designs, I'd also like the D'Kyr be able to use the Type-6 Starfleet hull material

Yeah i agree that ship actually does look like it would have been a proto-type ship design the federation would have created, maybe developed/created during the Undine conflict to travel thru fludic space.
