Was considering getting a dauntless experimental ship for my sci character, I had been told its a fun ship, so i looked it up. But damn its ugly. how about some new skins/variations for it? ( then I will part $ on it)
In all honesty, it looks MUCH better than Starfleet's obsession with designing flying spoons. Seriously. Vesta is a spoon. Emissary is a spoon. Galaxy is a deformed and mutilated spoon. The list go on, and on, and on.
That triangular, more spear head, THAT is what Starfleet needs to start doing. They need to start taking some lessons from Jem'Hadar, and start building triangular ships.

To be fair, some of the escort designs do manage to get away from that; for example, Patrol Escorts/Mirror Advanced Escorts can be quite compact, and the Advanced/Mirror Patrol ones have that 'spearhead' saucer going for them (see also: Prometheus and its spawn). On the other hand, there is this one science vessel whose saucer can kind of look like an ice cream scoop of all things.
That triangular, more spear head, THAT is what Starfleet needs to start doing...
I'm sure the art team would be able to devise a line of Dauntless-inspired models that retain the customizability players already know and love with the existing designs.

Triangular isn't exactly a traditional Fed design though. While they have done that with the Prometheus, and to a lesser extent the Intrepid (ok its more oval but the location of the phaser strips line up like the Prometheus pretty well), the fact is rounded saucers are more asthetically Federation. Also the fact that Starfleet uses phaser strips kinda negates the tactical advantage of having a triangular saucer section. Also... triangular might be more aggressive, and Starfleet isn't about aggression.
The main reason for a triangular design would be to maximize forward firepower on side mounted weapons, kinda like the Imperial class Star Destroyer from Star Wars. That way, side mounted weapons can pivot to face forward without risk of hitting the weapons in front of them. Phaser Strips kinda negate that. We saw how effective they were on the Galaxy, Intrepid, and Sovereign classes. The ability to fire from any point on the strip, in virturally any direction.
As for the Dauntless and its looks... well... she wasn't originally a Federation ship. She was a disguised alien ship. Starfleet just took the design and made it their own at some point after Voyager came home and they got to see this slipstream capable ship from Voyager's data.

I agree that having more ship customizations would allow more of us to choose to get ships that otherwise seem like a good fit class and stats wise but otherwise cannot deal with, not without at the very least tweaking some visuals. Back when the dauntless was first announced to be added to the pack, I too wished they allowed the warp nacelles to be positioned differently. I've grown to liking them and the overall ship look, maybe because I like triangular designs few as they appear. I guess limiting options is a way to have many ships and diversity without overlapping, but still, some options would be welcome.

*Gives a six-pack in agreement* So much this, it's a healthy change from the same ol' same ol' of starfleet ship styles. I love triangular designs.

my favorite among the sith empire designs, mainly because it has a superlaser on it like the sovereign and eclipse SSDs, but is small (and therefore maneuverable) enough to actually be able to use it more than once per battle

Amusingly how elsewhere people express their dislike of all the Chevrons and Triangles in STO starship design and want more round saucers...
I think I can like both styles.

Natrually of course those who want saucers should have them, just feel the style is over saturated for the faction. that's all. Just needs to be a greater design shape diversity than there currently is for the Federation.
Need more Triangles and points, after all, that is what the future looks like.
Norway and Yeager dammit... I still want my Typhoon and Jupiter though. JJ Trek The Kelvin Timeline is just Trek and it's fully canon... get over it. But I still prefer TAR.

The problem is that Starfleet designs tend to lean more towards the rounded saucer. Its been a staple since the NX Class of the 22nd Century. They really didn't change that until the mid-to-late 24th Century by introducing more streamlined designs like the Intrepid.

Until DS9, after that no ship except the Akira and Ent J had round saucers, (maybe the Sovereign it's not a circle but it is oval).
