Visuals are pretty important. One of the things I'v loved about mmo's and rpg's is that I can get a new appearance with different armors or items. People can spend hours in character creation in a first person shooter and they literally dont even see themselves most the game after that. If visuals weren't important? why would we be voting on ship design? Thats just another visual. Might as well sit down with a pencil and paper, play rpg's like in the old days, with no visuals at all besides imagination.
Ha I turn all visuals off. I love seeing my Veteran skin and blue glow on my Oddy too much

The only precedent in the game thus far is that Crypic, as per the release of the Romulan reputation, believe that such heavy ship visuals should be restricted to rep items only, as per their change of the Reman items to be rep items, and that mission reward items, such as those of the Kobali, Solanea, and Sol Defense sets should not have equivalent level visuals.
Pot, met kettle.
Wait, are you saying that the Reman items were changed to rep items because ONLY rep items can have a ship visual? Therefore they HAD to change the Reman items? Mate when you lose it at least you lose it big time.
Seriously, visuals are more important than performance of the set?
Yes, often enough it is.
Cryptic games tend to have very rich customization and it is a big draw for their games.
If you're not chasing the top 10 DPS charts, you can usually do with subpar gear and ships because pretty much any content is doable with them, and then, why not do it in style?
Star Trek Online Advancement: You start with lowbie gear, you end with Lobi gear.
The 3 piece set bonus is a nice group heal that effects even pets, plus there is some nice synergy between it and Reactive Repair Nanite Ship Trait. Its a good team set I think, strong on boosting healing abilities.
I have the whole set, but didn't have time to test it. I think it will rock on my carriers and hybrid carriers. From the tool tip the primary healing was over 10,000 to ships within 10km, plus the bonus healing, it seems very good.
Right now I have Reactive Repair Nanites, Scramble Fighters, Coordinated Assault, Starship Traits, and now the 3 piece set bonus that gives more healing to my fighters. It might be over kill, with enigeering team III (and the doffs that cut the CD), Repair Platform Console, plus the discussed traits I can dish out tons indirect healing to my fighters, make them invinisble for 5 seconds, boost damage by 25‰ for 5 seconds, heal them for 50% which benifits from Reactive Repair Nanites, grant them Beam Overload 1, APB3, Fire On My Mark, that new Tac power the boost damage for anyone attack your target I forget what its called. Do I really need to boost my ability to heal my fighters more? They have pretty good survive ability now.
Never mind, I probably shouldn't joke around in that manner. Suffice it to say that I'd have liked to see visuals on the Shield... but I can live without it. There are certainly other issued I'd rather see addressed first.
With each passing day I wonder if I stepped into an alternate reality. The Cubs win the world series. Donald Trump is President. Britain leaves the EU. STO gets a dedicated PvP season. Engineers are "out of control" in STO.
I'm using this as free gear for some of my shuttles, that don't have reasonable gear. I actually kinda like that giant engine plume out the back...no more worry about losing track of my tiny shuttle mid-battle!
I don't think I'd be that impressed if I were planning to use it on any of my main ships. But for the purpose I'm going to employ it for...it will work.

Imagine how many ship skins they have to make for a single item with visuals now. Back in the day it was much easier: you only had to worry about the first four tiers of ships in two factions.
Does anyone even know how many distinct ship classes there are now? That many skins for each item that has a visual effect. And it has to be a visual effect some other item isn't using already, so no Kobali shields with Reman visuals.
I tend to disable visuals anyway, unless I'm explicitly trying for a specific look. (Like when I put KHG gear on my Gorn's KDF ships to make them look a little more Gorny.)
What'd be really great is if we could apply such "skins" independently of the gear equipped. They already fixed this for ground armor and kits, a while back...

It's not as difficult as you're imagining it to be.
Been hooping to see the armor/engine/deflector visuals would be seperated from the items and added to the ship customization menu as a third row of drop-down menu choices. It would make it easier to use the visuals you like without gimping your ship in the prossess, or having to run specific ship layouts. Also just add another level of custumization to the game, while i would not mind also being able to add structural changes to your ship that are tied to a shield/deflector/engine/console as well independent of the said items like the borg set. I mean imagine being able to use the structural changes of the borg set with the visual pattern/texture/color of the breen set.
I would not mind seeing a shield visual on this shield, along with the Kobali and even the solane shield, along with the engines and deflector. Just think such branded kinda items should have a visual impact along with the combat impact of them. Almost would not mind seeing them run a contest later in which you could send in submissions of how you would like these items to change your ships look from a structural or a merely patter/texture/color stand point. An then have the community actually vote on which o the submissions they would like to see added to each of the branded sets that have no visual effects on your ship.
The Dyson gives you that cracked bone effect, the Reman is still amazing, but Breen gives you the Breen hull effect, the Jem'hadar is pretty great and the Borg is the most extreme...recently though, no effects and there aren't really any other of note. It's bad enough that the game is all about DPS and choosing the strongest weapons and sets, but where's the fun and the chance to just make our ships look cool?
It's not as difficult as you're imagining it to be.
Actually, I think you'll find it is. They'd have to map every visual to every ship in the game. That's a lot of ships. And from what limited experience I've had, mapping textures onto models is time consuming.

No they wouldn't, at least not necessarily. Perhaps if they were amateurs and laymen, that is how they'd do it, but I'd hope they're a bit more competent than that.
Just to remind everyone of things NOT said by my initial post or anywhere in this topic:
- Visuals are more important than stats and gameplay
- Everybody should care about visuals as much as me and should always have them on
- Cryptic can and should place visuals above bugfixing and new content because I say so
- OMG WAI U DO THIS CRYPTIC I WILL RAGEQUIT
I hope this has been enlightening for future posts.
I too was slightly disappointed the Sol shields had no visuals. Its not like a major thing, but with the engines having visuals i guess i half expected the shields to have one as well.
Well i guess than the next question should be this than, since one of the reasons they might not have given this or the Kobali set a visual is that they don't know what kind of look these should have. What would you make the visual look be for the shield, and/or the deflector on this set? Also wondering with the Kobali set what would people think would fit the best for that set to have for a visual altering look?
Honestly at this point I would like to see visuals become actual material/costume unlocks for ships, rather than just something bound to specific items.

Most of the time I disable the visuals. Only one I use the Visuals is the Breen set on my Breen ship.

Um I think you are forgetting the Breen Set. That comes with visuals.
