So, I was thinking about the end of the Iconian War arc, and never getting the chance to play "State of Q", while running yesterday...
They removed it, because they want to make it better... which is fine by me. I'd love to hear John de Lancie's voice as Q, which has been long-rumored/desired. BUT... after re-watching the playthrough of "State of Q", I realized something: the mission as it was no longer makes sense, story-wise. I don't see the Iconians, as we know them now, messing with temporal mechanics since it's also their "kryponite."
Then again... why use the Iconians at all? As the devs keep saying, time travel is now "out of the bottle," and if speculation of Sphere Builders and Temporal Cold Wars are to become reality... maybe a major re-imagining of this mission is possible. Here is my thoughts:
- Make "State of Q" the 6th Anniversary Event episode, which also falls during the franchise's 50th anniversary.
- Hire John de Lancie and Jonathan Frakes as voice talent (more on that in a moment).
- Open up the CBS archives and pull audio from "Emissary" and "The Best of Both Worlds." (They have the option to do this.)
THE BASIC PLOT: The Temporal Cold War begins, as one faction in that conflict attempts to interfere with the Federation's past. The player is called to a random system to investigate strange readings, only to encounter Q (voiced by de Lancie). The banter and objectives of the original mission can play out as they did... but, this is important... instead of Q just being mischievous, he is trying to
help us. Q sees the attempt to destroy the Federation by messing with the Borg at Wolf 359, and chooses to step in and help (not far from the original mission's premise, but this follows along with Q's characterization towards the end of
TNG, especially).
The player is sent back to the Battle of Wolf 359, and must prevent the Borg from assimilating Benjamin Sisko and the crew of the Saratoga... again, not far from the original concept. As the player moves through the ship, however, we see at one point a broken man scream "DAMMIT! WE CAN'T JUST LEAE HER HERE!!!!"... the original audio from "Emissary." As the final ground battle draws to a close, you hear Patrick Stewart's "I am Locutus of Borg..." audio cut through. The player ultimately defeats the Borg, the Sisko is saved, and you beam up.
BUT... the mission ain't over. The Borg are gone, but Wolf 359 is a mess... and there's a trap set. The Temporal Cold War faction is attempting to destroy the Enterprise-D! The player must sneak around the wreckage and scan for the trap, while avoiding the 1701-D as they look for survivors (cue Jonathan Frakes voiceover!).
It's a very rough idea, but you get the picture. You could let the player wind up on the bridge of the 1701-D, if desired... this would allow for that interior to be properly added to the game
for a legit reason, as well as the ability to interact with Frakes' Riker himself. Details aside, my main thought is that I'd love to see "State of Q" added back to the game, and the 50th anniversary should be a BIG deal in this game... and this idea would get voice talent (technically, LOL) from Frakes, de Lancie, Sir Patrick, and Avery Brooks.
Thoughts?

De Lancie is pimping Star Trek: Timelines, whose plot is spurred on by Q... so, while I've heard the same thing, I actually think that "he's done playing Q" unless you...

And, as for the permission of Brooks and/or Stewart... it doesn't sound like Cryptic needs the actors' permission. They'll need CBS' permission, but they apparently have that. Geko said they considered using the recorded voice of Roxanne Dawson from "Deadlock", back when they did the flashback cutscene from "Dust to Dust", but they wanted real voice acting.
Not to say that a royalty check would still need to be cut, because it could... it just sounds like it wouldn't stop them.
Just one character. Its an account unlock once you get it.
Hell we could actually go as far back as Enterprise and who knows, undo some of the unholy mess Bragga and CO inflicted upon it.
