I'd like to see a game that isn't a clone of so many other games.
Barring that, if the proposed STO2 were simply STO with different stories and gear, then I'd be unimpressed. For all the hate on Gecko or any other designer/developer, somewhere along the way you have to make choices and those choices have consequences. The consequence here is that everyone thinks it would be better to use his idea instead of the one the developers went with.
I, for example, believe that PvP should have been the focus of Season 7, with a complete remake of the rewards system to make PvP attractive to players, and a tier structure that matches players with their peers instead of throwing everyone into a single bag.
My choice was obviously not taken, but I won't go so far as to call the developers names: I'll just say that if a Star Trek based game that supports PvP came along, I'd leave STO in a heartbeat.
So, instead of STO2, I'd like to see Star Fleet Battles Online, I guess, which means STO is secure in its current niche.
Remind me to call FASA. There is still a FASA, isn't there? If not, I bet Steve Jackson holds the license now!

If there was a STO2 in development, it shouldn't be by companies that do single-player games, but a company or a team that's well experienced with MMOs. Especially in handling a good engine that could handle both Space and Ground. The current Cryptic engine works, but we all know it's limitations by now. In all honesty, what Star Citizen done with the Crysis Engine seems like a decent direction to go since it can do just that. Not saying using the Crysis Engine, but something as capable.
The timeline, I honestly would write it in the current timeline as STO, right after the Hobus Events. But do it in a more methoical way than relying on the storyline missions to carry the game.
For instance, the war with the Klingons wouldve been a boon with the PvPers with a decent Territorial Control scheme.
Exploration easily could've been achieved and kept us busy than it ending up as some random mission generator.
Instead of mobs dropping functional equipment (that's obsolete), let them drop salvage that could be used as resources or sold on a market, which could be used for crafting. And the crafters being the ones making the weapons.
Diplomacy actually matters, not it being some number.
Reputation is something that can go up and down.
There are a number of things I would do that I believe would make Star Trek Online a more functional MMO than it being an online single player encounter with people that it's been since F2P went live. But to accomplish that, requires CBS giving their blessing, $100 million to buy equipment, and at least 5-6 years to properly develop the game.
I was a great fan of Guild Wars 1. And they made Guild Wars 2, which was supposed to be a vastly enhanced version of the game. And what did we have ? A vastly less interesting game. Beautiful, for sure, but way less interesting. So no, i don't want a STO 2. Especially with what it means in terms of STO 1 maintenance, upgrades and additions (= less and less) during the development process of STO 2.
I agree...GW2 was a big disappointment, at least to me. I loved Guild Wars.
I guess we were due for this to rear up again so...
I'm going to have to say No.
Pretty much my thoughts. There isn't any point talking about a STO 2. It. Will. Not. Happen.
I agree with you both, I sat down and really read the thread this time around, and it sounds more like Dev and Cryptic bashing over any meaningful discussion on what a sequel would be.

Agreed. We're lucky STO even exists and we have the option to play it, bad or like wise.
Retired. I'm now in search for that perfect space anomaly.
I guess I prefer the more active style we have now over just "Giving orders". Then again I never played Bridge Commander. The CLOSEST I can compare to is probably Starfleet Academy.
but bear in mind the game is over a decade old and it's showing 3rd person combat instead of from your bridge. I'm having trouble finding footage of combat from your bridge where you give your officers orders and watch the viewscreen.
STO2.0? Nah. A sequel would really only serve the purpose of offering vastly different mechanics or better graphics. I'm fine with the graphics, and though I'd like updated mechanics... I'd be fine with additions and revamps over a complete overhaul. The main problems I have with STO are management-related, namely the piddling rate at which content releases, the ridiculous way it's monetized, and the total lack of anything resembling balance.
Not really interested in an STO 2 developed by cryptic and published by PWE.
Why? Because I play STO 1 for 3 years under those companies and experienced first hand in which direction they would develop STO 2.
If they continue to care about STO 1 in a good way I stick with them simply because I put a lot of effort into this title. If they stop caring about it, and let it be because a successor, all those efforts would be wasted, and I’ll be gone somewhere far, far away from those company’s names.

STO has shown very clearly that many Trek fans really want to play canon ships. A sequel to Star Trek Online would imply going even further along the Trek timeline.
I would make it a game set pretty closely after the Dominion War. Most of the canon ships are new and have every reason to be in active service. You can still introduce new ones (since there is also demand for that, too).
Close to the Dominion War would allow to explore the post-War situation in more depth - deal with the rebuilding efforts, mending fences and healing wounds. At the same time, an opportunity for a new wave of exploration. Maybe in a later expansion, the Gamma Quadrant would open up, as Odo's influence has started opening up the Founders to trust the Federation enough to allow that.
I would probably not have factions. The game would basically be Starfleet Online. Factions need seperate story arcs, and Star Trek is just not a setting that will lead to flexibility. I might allow Klingon, Cardassian and Romulan characters as part of Starfleet, and maybe later there might be tech exchanges and bridge officer exchanges that allow becoming using non Starfleet ships. (It would be a thin pretense ultimately, but so be it. Games have to make compromises.)
I would probably try to make the Bridge Officers more personal ,with their own stories integrated in the overall arc. Give player and bridge officers a voice. I think here I'd steal a lot of ideas from SW:TOR.
I'd probably have the background arc of the character start at the academy and show a few highlights of his career, but the "real" play starts when he becomes a Captain. Levels will likely be independent of rank.
Mechanically, I'd probably take some cues from STO, but try to reduce the clutter of abilities. STO has way too many IMO.
For example, the energy system I would keep similar to STOs, with a big difference: Weapon and Auxilliary power feed an energy pool. Weapons drain power from that pool, and many non-weapon powers will drain from the auxilliary pool. This means particularly that shield and weapon power have better opposing mechanics. If you have very powerful weapons, you drain more from that pool, so you exhaust it more quickly. That might be a key difference between something like an escort and something like a Cruiser - the Escort has more powerful weapons, but drains his resources quickly, while the Cruiser can sustain his firepower for longer.
I think BOFFs would work more as skill boosters for powers than as source for powers. (Tractor Beams are installed in almost every ship - but a skilled BOFF can get more out f them than an unskilled one.)
Star Trek Online Advancement: You start with lowbie gear, you end with Lobi gear.
STO has shown very clearly that many Trek fans really want to play canon ships. A sequel to Star Trek Online would imply going even further along the Trek timeline.
And a great many also seem to go for non-canon ships without hesitation. That's because while some people complain "hey, there aren't enough galaxy classes in game!" progressive Star Trek content isn't fundamentally undesirable (see. the fact that in spite of all the classic T6 revamps there's still a healthy market for new ships.)
Think of it this way, we've had years and years of star trek games that more or less just paid lip service to the TV shows. Some of those could be pretty fun but I'm going to say flat out that not one had any lasting appeal beyond it's gameplay because, while fan-service is good, what I think we all basically want (more than being Picard's very best friend in all the universe) is another Star Trek series. You could reskin an RTS or FPS with the franchise brand but without any real independent creative initiative the result would always feel hollow.
Personally, if I can't have that then the next best thing is a video game that tries to simulate what that might be. If it's just going to be rehashing old-stories, old ships, old missions, I'm sorry but the TV shows and movies are going to do a much better job at presenting those elements. We don't need to waste several years of a studio's collective life with the task of being nothing but the second fiddle (ie. resolving plot threads that were perfectly fine left hanging). Ultimately they still might not be able to pull off a very good solo act but that's strictly down to implementation and that's still going to be an issue even without taking some potentially redeeming creative liberties.
If ever there's another ST MMO, it has to try doing new things (and I'd personally start with another 40 years after Nemesis, as it is there's too much opportunity to waste creative output on resolving resolved character arcs.)

I am also a fan of more non-canon ships - I am playing my own Captain. But by staying closer to the TNG/DS9/VOY era, you can have both. Any non-canon ships you'd introduce in such a game could just be explained away as recent deveopments or "the show didn't have the budget for that." Considering how big Starfleet seemed to have become during the Dominion War (compared to Wolf 359), there is plenty of space for new ships.

As long as it's nothing to do with cryptic and pwe I'm fine. Even EA would be better.
I need to get to him. I can't just leave him out there alone. - Sometimes you've got to makes sacrifices, Lara. You can't save everyone. - I know about sacrifices. - No, you know about loss. Sacrifice is a choice you make. Loss is a choice made for you. - I can't choose to let him die, Roth.
If it would still be in Cryptic's hands it wil be the same as this game, buggy, low on content and heavy on monetisation and 3+ years of almost no content in the previous game because of the development of the new one. And if it was developed by another company the monetisation and bugs would be just different. There is no point in creating sequels to MMORPG games.
So no, no STO2 is needed,
I like the idea that STO 2 would give us a shot at a new, more versatile engine
It could give us a shot at a better engine...but could just as easily go with another crappy one. They could come up with a really good kick TRIBBLE gaming engine or they could also decide to cut costs/time and go with a modified or leased engine too.
I actually dont understand how a huge IP like Star Trek or Star Wars could have ended up the way they did with having a crappy engine. There probably will not be an STO 2 or an SWTOR 2 (or would that be SWTOR 3 because of SWG?) but if there was i would like for them to be made by some studio that uses a dedicated gaming engine made for that game. Not a leased/modified engine like Hero and not a modified engine for multiple games like with what PWE does (i think?).
Another thing about an STO sequel is that we are so far away from when ToS, TNG, Ent, Voy and DS9 were made. Now we have JJTrek1 and all the other New Trek movies. I'm afraid that any new Star Trek game or MMO will end up being based off of the new Trek which i'm not really a fan of. I dont really like how to new Trek actors portrayed the characters. Its like they were all acting like a bunch of "try hards" and they overdid it. Kirk acting like a cocky a-hole eating an apple during the Kobayashi Maru test, Spock being emo, Uhura walking around with that attitude hugging Vulcans, Pavel "he-who-runs-through-hallways-cause-i-can-do-zhat" Chekov, Harold White Castle...sorry i mean Hikaru Sulu, Montgomery "just try to unsee me from Shaun of the Dead" Scott, and Angry Faced McCoy. That last guy actually has an angry face in every movie he is in: Jason Bourne 2, LOTRO 3, Riddick etc. So yah thats another reason why i'm afraid of an STO 2 cause it will be based off of the new Star Trek.
STO/2? What are you doing when you log in to STO/1 now? The future of this game is going to come from the Foundry. I've decided to spend some of my STO time learning how to use the Foundry. Flying around the galaxy and having Foundry missions pop up at me has become the thing to do. At least then my ship isn't just sitting at the home world waiting for the next queue to pop.
I think STO has tremendous potential, but...the lack of content and flesh is hurting it. Remains to be seen what the developers will do to shore up those deficiencies. I will say STO is headed in a good direction and they've made some good changes recently. I'm staying with this and spending money on it in the hope that STO evolves into something wonderful.
Keep most of the space combat, with tweeks to undo the damage PWE/Cryptic had done, ground combat similar to SWTOR, crafting redone similar to SWTOR, removal of the damn timegates, 3 FULL factions that STAND ALONE, equal treatment of KDF, Romulans, and Feds (If Feds get 3 ships, ALL 3 factions get 3 ships), MORE BUG FIXES and much, much more to list.
I can't wait for ST Excalibur but alas it's a few years off at best!
Basically Bridge Commander style of game.
It's so far off bc STO has the IP license so STE has to be non profit so with lack of proper funding it's taking forever for the volunteers to create.
Excalibur deserves the IP license so much more. I really wouldn't mind if they stripped STO of it and gave it to Excalibur.

You know what i've been thinking too? instead of the full blown MMO treatment how about they give some of these popular IPs the Fallout or Skyrim treatment? single player with lots of depth maaaaaybe a little bit of multiplayer so you can play with a handful of your friends. With a Star Trek themed game i would like to see a hardcore crewman simulator. I come on board the ship as a crewman or ensign do some stuff around the ship, get assigned to an away mission, watch a redshirt die, do my stuff or whatever. Gain ranks and eventually end up as captain of my own ship i dunno. I've only played like 1-2 SP ST games and have heard of a few others and its always you starting out as the captain and doing captain things. But i've always wanted to just be one of the peons on the ship. I dunno though that might be a bit too niche/hardcore and most people would probably rather be the captain then some lowbie crewman.

They've been slowly on the decline for a while now. I would say Bethesda is still AAA but Blizzard is no longer the company it was 10 years ago.
I've played a lot of MMOs myself, some that nobody will recognize even when I say their name (Crowns of Power and Darkspace anyone?). Cryptic is not the worst by far, the problems are PWE and STO's engine. This engine is definitely not ideal for Star Trek. It wasn't their decision to use it, they were just stuck with it.
I've seen a few crop up every once in a while. I've been playing since just before F2P, and these things usually devolve into "This game is doomed, time to start thinking of a sequel" instances.
I have to agree with rattler... This isn't the 1st time this thread has come up... fact it has come up soo many times, it had to be put in the "FCT" section under "STO license ending in 2015"
Although I would love to see an improved STO, a STO2/Sequel isn't the answers.

And more honesty and openness from the devs.
Excalibur deserves the IP license so much more. I really wouldn't mind if they stripped STO of it and gave it to Excalibur.

Ooh what is this ST Excalibur you mention?
Off to the googles I go!
I've played about 13 or so MMO's and almost every AAA title release.
If you think Cryptic is anything near a reputable studio and PWE is anything near a quality company -- you're delusional.
Edit: Yea you have 2500 posts on these forums and you joined 6 months ago. Cryptic white knight here; move along.

I have to agree with rattler... This isn't the 1st time this thread has come up... fact it has come up soo many times, it had to be put in the "FCT" section under "STO license ending in 2015"
Although I would love to see an improved STO, a STO2/Sequel isn't the answers.
