    I have nine, and it is definitely too many. Fortunately the specialisation system has made me much more focussed on four of them. One space, and one ground on each side so I can team for any elite STF and dont have to mess about with trays and traits.

    If thats too tedious, then you can get by with blue MKXII beams and the old tac consoles (+30% damage). Like my rommy, She does pretty good, for an undergeared alt.

    +All the goodies you can get through Episode play through really help to get a ship up to par.

    So, stick to a few mains (if you want the best of the best), and equip the rest, with pass offs or blue mkXII gear, you'll be just fine.

    I know a few people that have over 100+ toons over a number of different accounts, and these people never complain about the grind. That being said, everyone has their own level of where they believe is to many toons, so be it. They can complain all they want, I just tune it out.

    And to think, before Delta Rising, I deleted a few alts, because I felt like they were too much of a time sink. ha! Just dealing with the excessive list of post 50 treadmills on one character is soul destroying. I thought the Apexis dailies in WoW were awful, then I came back to STO and realized; "hmm, maybe they weren't so bad." rofl

    I have never thought of the Apexis Dailies as being bad. I even liked them.

    i have 6 characters 3 main characters fed kdf rom and 3 delta alts fed kdf rom, I only really created the deltas so I could play the delta event and maximise the rewards for my main characters but I really only use them now for farming dil ec and such for my mains by running daily doff missions and taking part in events like this CCA, they only have the most basic gear they need to get the job done.
    specializations I don't worry about for any of my characters I managed fine without them before and I am managing fine now, every now and then looking to see if there are any I can buy but not fussing over how many I have or how long before I have them all.

    I try to play every day but I do what I feel like when I feel like doing it and I don't feel pressured into doing any content, there are still lots of stuff in the game I enjoy and I still have a fair few story missions I have not yet played but will get to at some point, most of the story missions past dyson I will probably never bother to play on my delta characters I just don't feel the need.

    if I am ever short on time I am quite happy to do what I can with my mains and miss my farmer alts completely.

    When I think about everything we've been through together,

    maybe it's not the destination that matters, maybe it's the journey,

     and if that journey takes a little longer,

    so we can do something we all believe in,

     I can't think of any place I'd rather be or any people I'd rather be with.

    I have 4 KDF & 6 Feds, and oddly, am not burnt out on them. Probably because grinding straight through to 60 & finishing rep tiers ASAP is not a priority. I play one at a time, whichever one I feel like when I log in, after I DOFF them. Depending on what I'm doing IRL & server reliability (rubberbanding, etc) it takes me 30 minutes to an hour to DOFF through them. I may log out & leave it there for a while if I have other RL things to do, or I'll play a couple of missions or queues. NBD. I think the problem with burning out with a lot of alts isn't the quantity of alts for some, but the "gotta get it all done NOW" mentality of some people. Take it easy, & just enjoy your alts.

    I had a few more toons, up to 15 I think right before Delta Recruitment. Deleted 5, remade 1 and made 1 new one.

    That puts me at 12 toons, 8 are lvl 60, the other 4 between lvl 52-56. 12 is my comfortable character number. I hate having the same ship on more than 1 toon so they are all flying something different. Did CC on 12 toons, that is a good hunk of Dilithium.

    I mostly play KDF side so I do a lot of Maraudering. Only 2 Fed, and 1 Fed Allied Reman (Gave him Blue Xindi Phasers).

    If they do another recruitment type event, I'm not sure if I would make a new toon. Most likely delete and remake my Ferasan Science Officer (Lv 55).

    Only think that would incline me to make additional characters would be Terran Empire as a 4th Faction.

    I had 15 toons and was feeling burnt out, 12 toons is comfortable variety.

    I like to play different species and try different looks but honestly its a pain to have many.. I only have one 60 character, 2 that are level 57 .. (was 54 for a very long time). I have deleted maybe 8+ toons so far. The others was not completed and they where deleted because it felt to much.. to grindy.. I only have the one toon that is 60 with some rep stuff the rest goes mostly on EC equipment.

    Id love to have more toons .. but its really a lot to keep up. I will consider making a rom next time when all my current toons is level 60 and has done all missions. Yes I deleted my only rom character.. I do like the rom story .. but it just came down to how much work it was left on them.

    Oh.. i do dislike that we have to pay so much Zen to change the character name. I hate one of my characters name but I am stuck with it.. I also dislike we can't change our profession on the character, I wish there was a re-training school system that allowed you to buy the ability to change your profession.. etc, like I hear you can do on other MMO's.

    I've got 7: 4 "mains" and 3 Delta Recruits which are all down in the 6-12 range. Don't get me wrong-- I was interested in the DR program, but my Arc took a TRIBBLE right around then and wouldn't update for about 5 months... I left off on STO and NW until things started working again recently. Not sure what I'll do with the DR's now, other than put them off until I finish leveling the other 4. I just play whichever toon appeals to me at the time. I always have tons of differnt toons in all of my games, and I'm a casual/binger, so coming and going is the norm for me. I get bored/distracted/busy with RL and sometimes won't play for weeks. Anyway, sometimes a new toon/build project can defeat the monotony of too much grinding.

    When I play one of my mains, I just play them for the night, or an episode or whatever. I'll usually doff all four, but not necessarily. All four are in the mid-upper 50's, but not that far along in the story (I think only one or two of them has even beaten Hakeev) and much of their advancement came from doffing. Now I just play through whatever I want, at a higher level with better drops. For me, The Grind is about as much fun as sitting in traffic...

    Not all of them, there are I am sure many, who retain many characters simply for freebie grinding!

    I'm exhausted, because it literally takes me 16 hours of play time just to do dailies on these characters, and I'm just plain exhausted. And it's the reason why I hate grinding.

    Why did this happen, because unlike the original STO system, where you could just hop in whatever character you felt like for the day. After F2P, it became a necessity to grind every day to maintain that character or you fall behind. Grinding Dilithum to buy gear and later upgrade that gear. You had to work on Reputaiton (which before the sponsorship system, was exhausting), then Cryptic in their infinite wisdom created the Specialization system and "encouraged" you to grind that, else you wasn't as effective in T6 gameplay.

    So STO literaly became a job and took away the fun. I have no time to spend in the Foundry because of this. Now some say "delete characters", but would you just throw away months of work to possibily start all over again? So in the end, I might be really stupid, but the next MMO I get myself involved in, I'm sticking to the 1 character.

    I think people are forgetting doff leveling. I have level 60 toons who I haven't spent a single spec point on yet, not sure what I want to do with him. He has 14 spec pts unused, almost 15.

    As I said I have 12 toons, 8 at lvl 60, the other 4 between lvl 52-56. It doesn't take a lot of time to jump through doffing Maraudering on 12 toons, say an hour total. I try to do that before work, then work on a particular character later on, run things with friends, do Red Alerts.

    Red Alerts are a bonus XP zone so great for teaching a bunch of mastery traits from ships you own, as well as finishing those lvls to 60.

    People talk about falling behind, like there is a vibrant pvp Community in the game, I guess I'm not competitive enough. I figure as long as I can do between 10-20k DPS, I'm not making anyone else carry me, beyond that, its a game, have fun.

    When it stops being fun, that's when it's time to take a break.

    I like CC and Mirror Universe Invasion. Summer & Winter ship grinds, I'll blow Lobi to reduce the pain.

    I don't bother. I don't try to get all the way up to my refining cap on every character.

    Very much this AND with the 3 main professions (Tac, Sci and Eng) you should be playing at least 9 toons to get the most out of the game.
    Then there are the various species with special traits...

    This game used to be alt friendly. With a registration date as old as yours, I would have figured you would know that.

    I am not sure if it's 14 characters I have, but basicaly - I play the ones I am interested in. For events I pick a few that I want the event to partake in, and play those.
    I try to get a few Daily bonus marks in while playing, particularly on characters that haven't finished all the reps yet.
    Barring special rep or event rewards, I a practically never max out my refinement limit.
    I have two characters dedicated to crafting (each covering a subset of the skills).
    When a character isn't level 60 yet, I tend to play him more, but only to some extent. A few characters are currently "lagging" behind and I don't pay them anyway because I am still trying to max out reputations on a few other characters.

    The biggest benefit the alts give me is that I can build specific characters around specific ships.​​

    The grind now is much worse then before say what you want to, but it most definitely is worse post-dr. I use to have three characters that were very well geared. By well geared I mean could jump into pvp and compete at an elite level geared. Now I have one character that's geared very well, tho not at an elite level as before Dr, and the rest are kind of meh. I don't have the will or desire to partake in the r&d lottery on more then one character. In total I have I believe 12 characters. They are split evenly between factions. The kdf are all contraband farmers now and the Fed's turn in said contraband.

    Quoted for truth. Oh, sure, it could have been better - but it used to be good enough before DR came along.

    This game was a lot more alt friendly before the ques were reduced to 5 different maps that would pop up. ISE FA CCE KSA BDA. that's it. That's your endgame. Enjoy.

    Cryptic needs to give us a reason to play the other ques or just delete them, because its annoying to know that they are there but you wont ever be able to play them.
