To actually balance things in STO would require that all Sci powers, which are basically Space Magic and should be relegated to fantasy games only, be usable only by slotting them as weapons.
These powers are for the most part offensive (In more ways than one) and should not be simply powers.
The loss of 2 weapons mounts are currently compensated by all Sci ships receiving 4 free Tactical? powers as well.
Think how awesome it would be to actually be able to leave Space Dock without slotting Sci Team for Sub Nuke and Polarize Hull for Tractor Beams.
Somebody, someday, will have to explain me why PvErs dislike PvPers. All the elitism I see comes, as far as I see it, from those who cannot fight against a human being and grieve over those who can.
It's not even a balance issue anymore, because if it was we'd be seeing threads left and right praying to take care about a neglected part of the game. It's just the same old propaganda, PvPers are X/Y/Z bad all the times, everytime.
Cryptic has fostered this mentality by creating a PvE where everything is handed to you on a silver platter. Then when big bad PvP'rs come along asking for a balance pass, some people get butthurt that PvE isn't handed to them as much as before.
'Course, last time the devs balanced something broken for the sake of PvP was years ago, but the mentality of the butthurt ones remains.

It was April 2015? For surgical strikes, then late april or early may 2015 for the R&D exotic damage trait. Also the nerf to plasma doping, though that may have been pvp independent.

Because it's a game and people come here to get away from all those exploiters in the real world.
Because the IP supports peaceful exploration and not the rabid L337ism of some of the PvP community.
I can explain some of it. It's a carry-over from people's stories of bad experiences in on-line multiplayer modes for Call of Duty, HALO, etc. where there really WERE and ARE the kind of douchenozzles that...well...that match Geko's profile of the PvP player.
You know, 14 year old basement dwelling min/maxers with no social skills and ferret reflexes, who teabag other players when they drop them, live to camp a spawn (We can include that Blizzard game in this), and are verbally abusive to the point that they almost match the kind of bile you see in the chat window when someone fails an 'Advanced' here on STO in PvE.
That's fitting. Yeah I remember the 14 years old thing, one of the reason I regard Geko as a [REDACTED]. I... I... I can't even come up with a plausible explanation of how a game developer can possibly insult a part of its playerbase. Ho... How did he even manage to find the words? That's beyond me.
YES, I figured out how to censor threads I don't like.
I'll throw the PvP card, that should get it locked with all the flame bait that will surely follow bwahahahah!
I always had the feeling you were evul in your inner self, that's a confirmation
I need to get to him. I can't just leave him out there alone. - Sometimes you've got to makes sacrifices, Lara. You can't save everyone. - I know about sacrifices. - No, you know about loss. Sacrifice is a choice you make. Loss is a choice made for you. - I can't choose to let him die, Roth.

Pretty much this.
Those type of people exist in every game from every developer everywhere. Also, some people enjoy casually playing the game and getting in a little rp. It's not all about min/maxing and building the best uber tea bag your face ship you can afford,...
I got my fill of PvP years ago in a little game The Realm. Had enough attitude and douchebaggery for a lifetime. I'd rather spend what time I have to play, playing and enjoying myself that dealing with little **** douchenozzles that pop up from time to time.
As long as I can enjoy the game and accomplish what I want to accomplish without PvP, so be it.
I have no personal opinion on the topic, other than I want no part of it. If otehr people do, so be it and more power to them.
"Go play with your DPS in the corner, I don't care how big it is." ~ Me "There... are... four... lights!" ~Jean Luc Picard
That nailed it, thanks. Rather than toggling them off, which may lead to not understanding what's going on, is to make FXs more neat, detailed, less intrusive for the player. Like EWP not leaving rotating texture that, if you're even going too fast, is displayed like a bunch of rounded weird clusters and not continuous. Or BFI making you glowing pink. Or the spinning icons on top of the ship when using a Team ability. Or Hazard glowing green.

I usually am civil. Or try to be anyway. When I get pissy is when people, usually PvPers honestly, pull out the old "well, if you're too afraid,..." taunts. Fear has nothing to do with anything. It's a question of preferences, enjoyments and priorities.
In any case, that's my $0.02 on the subject.

Can we just remove PvP from the damned game already? I'm sick and tired of them getting stuff taken away from players because they're butthurt about having it used on them. They can **** right off as far as I'm concerned. They are a pox on the game.
I'd like to be wrong in my conception of the PvE player in STO. All I get are confirmations of my idea. Who's the stupid between you and me right now?

Oh wonderful. I brought some cheese, and I can see that the OP brought some refreshments. Let's proceed with the picnic!
On a serious note: if you don't like an ability then don't use it. Just because someone isn't getting the results he wants in PVP is no reason to ruin the game for the rest of us.
No one wants to find an actual challenge in Advanced or Elite queues, they just want to be able to pew pew their way through without the slightest risk to their shiny ships and egos
On a serious note: if you don't like an ability then don't use it. Just because someone isn't getting the results he wants in PVP is no reason to ruin the game for the rest of us.
Ah, but is it ruining the game for anyone else?
Did anyone say "Hey, you know what I would really like? To be totally immune to all damage and effects that the NPCs (seldom) use against me!"
Would it "ruin the game" for anyone if they weren't there at all? If they were substituted for high Defense and Resistance that can be overcome by players, but not NPCs? No, of course not. No one wants to consider that, just rant against the Big Bad PvPers who "get everything nerfed", while conveniently forgetting all the things we HAVE gotten buffed and all the things we'd like to see buffed.
I truly, honestly give up on this game. It's one thing to have to battle the Devs to get a meaningful game, but it's pointless when even the players want to have Space Barbie Godmode, who are so opposed to anything that's not their style of gameplay. "WELL IF I CAN'T BENEFIT FROM WHAT THE DEVS ARE SPENDING THEIR TIME ON, THEN YOU CAN'T HAVE IT! I DON'T CARE IF THEY'VE DEVELOPED FOR PVE AND RP FOR 5 YEARS, I WILL NOT SUPPORT THEM SPENDING 1 WEEK ON PVP DEVELOPMENT!"
But of course, the PvP vs PvE argument is always what comes up, even when you're trying to make a change that will foster cooperation and a better gameplay environment for everyone.
As dontdrunkimshoot once said: that was the longest, most moronic, autistic, childish meltdown i ever read, about something not even real, and i thought i took this too seriously.

You wonder why people are hostile towards you? Really?
"Cannot fight against a human being". Man, take that attitude and shove it so far up your TRIBBLE your eyeballs pop out. THAT is why we hate you. Because you think your kind of fun is superior, your skills are superior, your preferences for the game and your priorities for how it should be built are superior, and that things should be changed for your benefit and your benefit alone.
What part of we COULD play competitive PvP if we wanted to do you not understand? What part of the fact that many if not most of us find that level of obsessive minimaxing to be a pointless and obnoxious pain in the TRIBBLE do you fail to understand? It's not our idea of a good time, and that does NOT make us any lesser than you.
What we want is to experience stories, immerse ourselves in the setting, and play the hero. It's entertainment for us, and for you it's a sport. We don't WANT to play it as a ******ned sport, can you wrap your head around that for once? We would find playing it that way to be frustrating and pointless and unrewarding, and find the competitive attitude required to enjoy PvP to be obnoxious and counter to the spirit of cooperative entertainment.
We as PvE players want to COOPERATE with our fellow gamers so we ALL have a good time and we all win. In the PvE game all get to be heroes and win for a change, when real life is often so stressful and harsh. We don't WANT to destroy other players or make them fail, we want to win TOGETHER with them. We get to beat up on enemies without hurting any human person's feelings or ruining anyone else's good time. We get to have fun together where nobody has to suffer frustration and disappointment. The real world is brutally competitive, we want something else from our gaming time.
You, though, think PvP is for the real players and everyone else only does it because they can't cut it. You think that taking things away from PvE players is ok because we're just losers who can't make the cut in the competitive league. Your head is so far up your own TRIBBLE you have to open your mouth to be able to see. The world, and the game, does NOT revolve around you.
If you don't like something being used against you in PvP, ask to have it banned FROM PVP and from PvP ALONE. When you want it nerfed for everyone, you're hurting everyone else and taking something away from them to suit your needs at the expense of others. It's incredibly selfish behavior and it makes those you have so selfishly caused inconvenience to to hate your self-centered TRIBBLE. You have no respect for PvE players and what we want doesn't count in your little self-centered world, because to you we're just the scrubs that can't compete. To you we're just whining, because our needs as PvE players are not considered of any value. You don't consider PvE a valid and worthy way to play the game, you consider it a trash collection of rejects who have failed PvP.
Your arrogance, condescension, self-centeredness, and refusal to respect the feelings and wishes of other players, ones you have judged to be inferior second class gamers in the shadow of your elite group, is why we hate you. We hate you because you're obnoxious and your attitude is toxic.
Please go away.
Very well said, very damn well said. I'm fine with all of the immunities and buffs the devs hand us because I can use them in the storyline missions I DO enjoy and I can use them in PvE to work with my team mates. I never appreciate all the nerfs thrown our way and it irritates me to no end when I have other players crying out for nerfs. We get enough of them from the Devs without any help from a certain player group.
And the less I say about how most PvP players need an attitude adjustment the better.

I (We?) get that and understand that.
But at what point does it become too much? At what point are you invincible death machines, rolling through NPCs that can't even scratch your paint because you've either A) killed them too quickly or don't even take any damage they're dishing out?
That's probably OK for Normal, given STO's casual (but at the same time, not at all, given it's prohibitive cost structure) nature, but Advanced? Elite? Shouldn't there be some sort of challenge there?

Couple things with this post. I get your reason for not wanting to pvp. There are plenty of competitive aspects of pve as well though. DPS League anyone? Personally, I'm very competitive by nature and it translates over into things I do. You're not or don't want to be in a game? That's cool. Nothing wrong with that.
The main thing though is this nonsense that any player or subset of the community can make the developers do anything. Pvp is such a minority that it could be removed and not affect anything. This was stated by a developer. So why is there this nonsense that pvper's get things nerfed? If something is overperforming, they'll nerf it. That's up to the developers to decide what's performing the way they want and what isn't. The only things anyone could really be credited with is bug reporting. Anything else, they'll look at, run w/e tests and then make a decision. I give no credit of any kind to anyone who's said "oh you mad at pvpers, well we got this buffed!" or to anyone saying "pvpers got my shiny nerfed!".
Both arguments are nonsense. Devs build the sandbox and decide how much or how little sand. You find a hole in the box where sand is leaking out and let them know then kudos to you.
On topic. I agree immunities are out of control. For me, pve is already so easy they aren't needed. They make pvp even more of a laugh then it already was. I don't use them except for temporal insight and not even the best version. I simply could not bring myself to play the cardassian arc! :P
I really wish they didn't fix Ionic Turbulence and Suppression Barrage. The outcry for chained unresistable stuns and chained unresistable movement, accuracy and damage debuff would have been something epic to see.

On topic. I agree immunities are out of control. For me, pve is already so easy they aren't needed. They make pvp even more of a laugh then it already was. I don't use them except for temporal insight and not even the best version. I simply could not bring myself to play the cardassian arc! :P
