Per the words of Captain Jean-luc Picard, (who is aways right), l from Contagion, we will find the Iconians are only a small remnant of their race who managed to escape from the only remaining active gateway on Iconia during the bombardment two hundred thousand years ago. They weren't really evil, but the races who arose against them wrote the history after Iconia fell. These few remaining Iconians have been working behind the scenes to get their revenge while other ancient super races like the Kelvins are still powers to be avoided.
The Iconians will reveal the real threat is from outside our galaxy and because the door is open here come he next threat to the Alpha, Beta, Delta and Gamma Quadrants.
And then the Dominion makes it's return.

Why not they've done it so far. First the ultimate baddy was the Borg... then they let that die, and brought in the Jem'Hadar... then the Breen... now the Iconians... next has to be something bigger then the Iconians... and probably something that shifts it back to the Gamma Quadrant for the next expansion... and the Prophet mentioning the next big bad pretty much accomplishes this.
There's a huge difference between how they protrayed the borg/breen/dominion/ect. and how they've portrayed the iconians. Its called building up to them. It started with Sphere's of Influence and has worked continuously for several seasons to set up the fight we're about to have in Season 10 and presumably 11 as well. Before that we had stand-alone FE's with independent conflicts (ex. the 2800, fight against the breen, the true way, foiling B'Vat, ect.) which did not strongly relate to the preceeding or following story arcs.
To use the Enterprise analogy again, what we had right up through LOR was very similar to ENT Seasons 1 and 2. There are broad themes and plot elements, but not so much direct connection (you don't have to play the romulan arc to understand what's going on in the cardassian arc for example). Then we got into STO Season 7 and a directly connected series of events have brought us into direct confrontation with the other kind of sphere builders. That's like ENT Season 3. However if that's to have any narrative structure (and it must, or else fail spectacularly) it must end at some point. Afterwards Cryptic could try to do it all again, with almost inevitably fewer returns, or they could move along with something more analogous to ENT Season 4 (smaller conflicts that don't require 3 seasons and 1 expansion to get somewhere, but with greater scope than ENT season 1 or 2.)

Looking for something new to play? I've started building Foundry missions again in visual novel form!
I'm actually a little concerned that they are wrapping up to close the game, like star trek enterprise and stargate universe, when those two couldn't "hit the numbers" they wrapped them right up
and that the delta recruit thing is both a last ditch effort to get more people and also to give the existing players something
the lack of budget for quality improvement and bug fixes is bothering, it can represent many things - but one of those things is not investing the future

I don't see why they would be. Champions is still online for example. STO has built itself on this run-up to the iconians and after FIVE YEARS its finally time to start paying it off.

Temporal Cold War maybe? Who knows, maybe a front in this bizarre war could open up in the period after the Iconian War. The Alpha and Beta Quadrant powers would likely be exhausted enough to be tempting targets to temporal meddling.
After Dino-riders season, Two deathstars, and the new anime pornstar armor. I think we will be fighting either Strawberry Shortcake, The Shirt tails, or a giant tenacle monster.

Actually.... That might come first. It occurs to me that the Iconians probably DO want to meddle with time, but can't do it themselves.
Like others have said...there is the Gamma Quadrant...still lots of Delta Quadrant...Andromeda...who knows maybe other galaxies...if the game keep living there is lots of stuff we can do
Can't have a honest conversation because of a white knight with power
I think we have gained enough XP to obtain the glow and beat the shogun of Harlem in any setting we choose, then we'll fight the continuum.

Then they can have another new toon promo... where a time agent pops you into another time right after the delta agent pops you into that time... explaining that the delta agent is really a nefarious agent of the wrong side of the temporal cold war. Your new toon will now be a double double time agent with cream, or is that a side of cheese. Not sure which ever... should be fun.
