There have been a ton of shows, and a ton of movies. So make your list, and lets hear what you see as the best of the best in hand held weapons on Sci Fi.
this is a toughie... can only post favourites and the only ones i can think of
- sword of Kahless
- mek'leth
- DS9 hand held phaser
- Tolian Soren's gun
- wrist thingy from Cowboys and Aliens
- that shotgun from ENT Broken Bow
- fusion sword from FF7:AC
- Arquallian Arm Cannon from MIB
- Ash's chainsaw arm
- long arm grappler gun used by a detective from a show called Cybersix
honourable mentions:
- ghostbusters proton pack
- noisy cricket
- zf1 from Fifth Element
- Mauser M712 Schnellfeuer from Fifth Element :P
- Batarangs
- district 9 arc gun
- sword gun from FF8 (tho, not a movie)
No love for the Gun, the weapon employed by Sandmen in Logan's Run? Fires multiple forms of munitions, with the especial inclusion of the Homer, a round that homes in on its designated target no matter where they hide - what's not to fear- er, I mean love?
The M-Lash from Andromeda. The M stands for "Molecular". Basically a finer-than-a-razor whip capable of tearing anything apart: walls, people, even the user. One has to be very capable with a whip to wield an M-Lash safely.
I'd definitely put the Judge Dredd Lawgiver on the list, and the Lightsaber is a given.
The M-Lash from Andromeda. The M stands for "Molecular". Basically a finer-than-a-razor whip capable of tearing anything apart: walls, people, even the user. One has to be very capable with a whip to wield an M-Lash safely.
Sounds similar to the variable-sword from Niven's Known Space. The blade is a length of Sinclair monomolecular filament, stiffened by a Slaver stasis field; it's about a molecule thick, and can literally slide between other molecules, severing their bonds. The "variable" part is because the filament is kept on a spool in the handle, and can be extended anywhere from zero to about a meter. It's very important to keep an eye on where the little bulb is, that marks the end of the filament...
1. Blade runner pistol.
2. That pistol from bsg season 1 and the mini series.
3. Light saber
4. iron man armor
5. Black widows arm attached... Things.
6. The phaser rifles from first contact
7. Ent phase pistol
8. Goua'uld staff weapon.
9. Andromeda lance
10. Bajoran phaser pistol
But those are just the once of the top of my head, prety sure I forgot some.
1. Lightsaber. Easily one of the most iconic melee weapons in sci-fi, can also be used at range for specific things in conjunction with the force.
2. Federation Stun pistol. One of the most recognizable hand held weapons that was used throughout the trek series, but more prominently through the TNG era and refined during DS9 and VOY.
3. Judge Dredd's Lawgiver. Judge Dredd was so awesome he came as a double act with the Lawgiver pistol, so terrifying was the law that some think that Dredd created it for his amusement and the Lawgiver was his means of laughter to fools who stood in his way.
3. Robocop's hidden automatic pistol. Thing was capable of being as deadly as any weapon, very accurate even with full auto. OP a weapon if ever there was one.
4. Ka D'Argo's Qualta Blade. Sword and single shot rifle in the same meaning, centuries old by the time Ka D'Argo used it in anger, he never left it behind until he passed it to his son due to tradition. One of the most fearsome weapons.
5. Bat'Leth. The most unique "Sword" design in existance, the Bat'Leth is not capable of slicing things in two, but with enough brute force, its just as effective as any weapon as long as its used correctly.
6. Romulan Disruptor Pistol. Another iconic weapon from the TNG era, typically used by romulans, although a few federation officers blew one up once.
7. Minbari Fighting staff. Used by Minbari and later the rangers of both Humans and Minbari as a means of self defense. with enough force, its as capable as any other weapon.
8. Jaffa Ma'Tok staff weapon. Easily one of the most recognizable weapons, the Jaffa use them all the time as a weapon of terror, ranged and useful in melee alike, with a well trained combatant, its a very hard weapon to get passed.
9. Jaffa Zat'nik'tel. Another iconic weapon, used by Goa'uld, mostly to incapacitate by electricity on the first shot, after that its death and vaporization.
can't think of a ten just now, mind has gone blank.
T6 Miranda Hero Ship FTW. Been around since Dec 2010 on STO and bought LTS in Apr 2013 for STO.
Q2 hold-out blaster pistol, or the ELG-3A blaster pistol. They look pretty nice, and they still manage to hurt stuff. DL-44 might also go into this category, and I'm somewhat partial to the DH-17 or DL-18.
Phasers aren't bad, either, and I think I'd go for the TNG-era Type 2 phaser. Call me crazy.
Marcusdkane mentioned the High Guard lance, and I fully agree with it. A gun that fires homing bullets, can be used in melee combat, OR acts as an energy weapon.
Not sure if they count, since they're technically wrist-based, but StarCraft psi blades aren't bad. I might be under the (inappropriate, given the difference between a psi blade and a Protoss :P) influence of 'Whispers of Doom' or whatever the cinematic was called, though - the one where Zeratul had a run-in with Kerrigan and a few hydralisks.
It's not quite sci-fi, but maybe it counts seeing as I like it because of sci-fi. P-90.
Also, Zat'nik'tels, Ma'tok staffs, and Wraith pistols. Traveler particle magnum is more useful, but somehow, despite the fact that I like the color red... it just doesn't manage to look as nice when it's shooting. Don't particularly care for Ori staffs, though.
Infinite possibilities have implications that could not be completely understood if you turned this entire universe into a giant supercomputer.
1. The Lazy Gun from "Against a Dark Background".
2. The Xeelee "starbreaker" handgun. (It's called a starbreaker, because, well... that's what it does.)

In no particular order:
PPG: Babylon 5: The Phased Plasma Gun had an interesting "Bullet" that actually distorted the air around it.
Phaser: Star Trek series: Self explanitory
Lightsaber: Star Wars series: Self Explanitory
P-90: Stargate series: Real life weapon used in sci-fi that looks cool. Also... as Col. O'Neill described it: "This is a weapon of war. It is made to kill the enemy."
Force Lance: Andromeda: A sidearm that can expand into basically a rifle as well as be used as a melee weapon. Can also fire from BOTH ends.
M-41 Pulse Rifle: Aliens: Just awesome... and might actually be possible, but with a smaller magazine capacity.
Deunan Knute's SMG: Appleseed: She's deadly with that thing.
Star-Lord's blasters: Guardians of the Galaxy: dual purpose weapons with an over/under barrel design.
I can't take it anymore! Could everyone just chill out for two seconds before something CRAZY happens again?!

Oh, and having just completed a run through Mass Effect 3 with a FemShep Infiltrator:
The Spectre-issued Black Widow sniper rifle, upgraded to Mk 5. Based on the Widow anti-materiel rifle, which was originally designed to stop trucks and charging krogan, the Black Widow upgrades this with a three-round thermal sink (a Widow can only fire once before you need to swap sinks), and delivers a more powerful round. I was one-shotting Reaper Cannibals and Marauders, as well as almost everything Cerberus threw at me (except Phantoms, who have two layers of shielding, and Atlas assault suits, which are designed to take on an entire squad of normal soldiers anyway), and three-shotting Banshees.
Special thanks to her backup weapon, the geth pulse rifle - each round might have been less powerful than the equivalent rifles from the Systems Alliance or asari, but it threw out so very many...

1. I feel the number one spot has to go to the old granddaddy of science fiction, Lensman's really not-very-humble-at-all DeLameters.
2. But it's a close thing to lightsabers- bringing fantasy to a sci-fi setting and looking cool while doing so. I could probably give it the number 3 spot as well
3. Phaser - a weapon of incapacitation and destruction that can fit in your pocket. And it's a grenade in a pinch.
4. The PPG on Babylon 5 - cool effect, and distinctive sounds.
5. Bat'leth - When shopping on Q'onos, accept no substitutes.
6. Honorable mention to the Protoss sci-weaponry, especially the psi-blades. Less efficient than lightsabers, but very associated with the Protoss, their strengths, and failings.
7. Jaffa staff weapon- As noted on show, way too complicated for the displayed form, but very distinctive.
8. Han Solo's pistol should get a mention. He's almost always got it out in photos. From a publicity perspective, he's more associated with the gun than Luke with his lightsaber. But they didn't need the hype.
9. Force lance on Andromeda- flexible, but never felt very potent on how it was used on-show
10. Sergeant Schlock's plasma gun - brute force weapon in a more elegant time. But some respect for basically carrying field artillery as a sidearm.
Fate - protects fools, small children, and ships named Enterprise Will Riker

Phaser II > Phaser I. From Stun to Kill to Overload. What else do you need really?
I like the TOS Phaser II, but the STIII - STVI phasers I always thought looked the most badass.

For me, I just think it's the most versatile of sci fi weapons. Even if it was to be out of bullets or other energy effects, it could still be used as a staff weapon, which is why I put it above phasers or lightsabers
-TR116 (DS9)
-Lightsaber (Star Wars)
-Minigun (Blane's from Predator, though not practical in real life)
-DC-17 heavy blaster pistol (TCW)
-Phaser (DS9 season 4-7)
-Bat'leth (Star Trek. Why am I even saying where it is from?)
-Mek'leth (Above)
-Noisy cricket (MIB)
-Wrist Rocket (SWTOR)
-Energy Staff (Stargate Movie)

You know, I've been looking for a really good cheese slicer...
Oh, yes, a variable-sword will slice cheese. And the cheese plate. And the table. And the floor. And, if you're not careful, you. All with about the same amount of effort.
