Zero-Point Energy Field Manipulator - aka "Gravity Gun" from Half-Life 2.

What's not to love about a gun that is also a tractor beam and can turn just anything into a projectile?

    Lightsaber

If you really need a list of ten, well, there are different types of lightsabers and blade colors, so...

Any gun you can use as a personal jetpack is a good gun in my book :D

I would however like a variant of Sgt. Schlock's plasgun that has a second handgrip to allow it to be held and used two-handed for those of us who aren't quite as steady at waving around a twenty kilogram sidearm one-handed.

My vote for "most powerful handheld weapon" would be those anti-Q rifles from the Q Civil War in the episode "The Q and the Gray". When they miss they can cause supernovas.

Turning to the comic book side of sci-fi, there's Space Ghost's wrist/glove multi-weapons, whatever he called them. There's also Syndrom's zero-point gloves. That he used them in non-lethal ways merely reflects his short-sightedness, not a lack of potential.

    My top three:

Star Trek (TOS): Federation Type II phaser pistol

Logan's Run: The D.S. Pistol (The Sandman pistol)

    Battlestar Galactica (1978): Colonial pistol

(Sorry, only naming 3 instead of 10.)

    1) EarthForce PPG from Babylon 5. I've always just LOVED the look of it.
    2) DS9-era Star Trek Type 2 Phaser.
    3) Klingon Mek'leth.
    4) Cardassian Phaser pistol.
    5) Ent-era Phase Pistol.
    6) Zat-gun-thingy from Stargate SG1.
    7) Stunners from Stargate Atlantis.
    8) TOS-era Type 2 Phaser.
    9) Klingon Disruptor Pistol.
    10) Ent-era Starfleet Plasma Pistol (Broken Bow).

The majority of what weapons I would listed have been.
About the only one I would add is Crescent Rose, Ruby's weapon, from RWBY. I mean, come on, who wouldn't like a collapsible Scythe/Sniper Rifle weapon?

EDIT: I don't think I've seen anyone mention the ZF-1. Granted the weapon itself didn't have much of an impact, but you have to admit it is a cool frankengun...

    Thank you for the time...

There have been a ton of shows, and a ton of movies. So make your list, and lets hear what you see as the best of the best in hand held weapons on Sci Fi.

    Your Top 10

    Begin!

Hmm, best of the best... Its kinda hard to do that with the infinity gauntlet, so i'll leave that out.

One "gauntlet" I liked from the sci fi shows was that gou'uld gauntlet or Kara kesh as it was called. Pretty nifty device.

Lightsabers, but just for looks. Practicaly they are bad.
The almighty P90 that can kill Everything from life-sucking space vampires, crazy jihadist/crusaders that follow Ori, slaves with snake in their stomach to replicators bugs. Fabrique nationale de Herstal must be so proud of their Product.
I think they also had at first seassons MP-5. But you are right, cool weapons indeed.

The 2 barrel shotgun. Saw-off or not, it was present in soo many shows, movies and games. Allways handy to shoot some zombies, or even vampires (think Blade did that using metal stakes attach to it).

Both Thor's Hammer and Loki's Scepter from the last movies.

From Star Trek, the phaser rifle Picard had when he teleported onto the Scimitar.
And from the game, the Experimental Dyson Rifle.

    1. FN Herstal P90 Personal Defense Weapon (Stargate). 50-round clip, default round is armor-piercing, and it looks wicked cool.
    2. Malcolm Reynolds' service pistol (Firefly). This is a pistol chambered for .303 rifle rounds. It's a hand cannon.
    3. Ronon Dex's Particle Magnum (Stargate Atlantis). Here's why.
    4. Harry Dresden's .44 Magnum revolver (The Dresden Files), just for the sheer funny of him pulling it on some wizard wannabes who want him to duel them in one of the short stories.

      Ahm' a-fixing to defend myself.
    5. MACO Battle Rifle (Star Trek Online). Closest thing STO has to a designated marksman rifle.
    6. Morita Mk I Rifle (Starship Troopers). Assault rifle with an underslung shotgun; what's not to like?
    7. The various bolter variants (Warhammer 40,000). You're basically firing a miniature rocket-propelled grenade launcher capable of full auto.
    8. Necron gauss flayer (Warhammer 40,000). It's a Dalek-style instakill beam that will take out a tank.
    9. Black Widow sniper rifle (Mass Effect 3). I loved its predecessor the M-98 Widow in the previous game and the Black Widow improves on it.
    10. Linear accelerator rifle (Star Carrier novels). Semiautomatic railgun used as a sniper rifle, will fire two rounds per second at 800 kps from a 30-round clip. Also self-destructs if you run out of ammo and need to keep the enemy from getting it.

Regular Federation phaser and most other Star Trek guns disqualified for failure to include a trigger guard. That'll kill you. Remember, there's only two kinds of gun owners: those who have suffered an accidental discharge, and those who will.

I don't think I can list only ten, but I'll give it a try.

    In no particular order:

    - First Contact phaser rifle
    - Type 2 phaser
    - Zat gun from Stargate (same goes for stunners from Atlantis)
    - Ronon Dex's Particle Magnum (Stargate Atlantis)
    - BFG-9000 (Doom)
    - ZF-1 (The Fifht Element)
    - Lightsaber (SW)
    - Qualta Blade (Farscape)
    - Shock rifle (Unreal Tournament)
    - Line gun (Dead Space) and plasma cutter (ok, that's two, but plasma cutter is just like a smaller version of line gun)

That's my top ten. But I'm going to mention some others also wich unfortunately couldn't made it in the list, but are worth mentioning:

    - Yithian lightning gun (Call Of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth), Plasma Rifle (Doom 3), Predators melee weapons (especially that smart disc) as well as their shoulder cannons (Predator), Javelin Gun (Dead Space 2), Vera (Firefly), District 9 alien weapons, Jaffa staff weapons (Starfate SG-1)...

While I agree with most of the above, I would have to give a spot to a knife from a Dr Who novel I read a while ago. It was a knife with a blade made of a type of force field capable of adjusting all the way from blunt two by four down to capable of cutting apart atoms. Get some Uranium and go to town.

Speaking of Doctor Who weapons, how come nobody's mentioned the favoured weapon of the Master, the Tissue Compression Eliminator. Or the Demat Gun
