Game freeze when booting while windowed

... or Windowed Fullscreen mode. It was fine until earlier tonight playing in windowed fullscreen, until I accidentally hit the button at the top right and swapped it to normal windowed and back, at which point the game crashed. Now it refuses to load at all while windowed; it gets to the initial Cryptic loading bar, loads a sliver, and then freezes solid and needs to be force quit.

Loading in proper fullscreen mods usually works, and even swapping to windowed/windowed fullscreen after loading in fullscreen mode works fine, but the problem returns once the game is quit. Part of the problem in diagnosing it is that it seems inconsistent; loading in windowed fullscreen is guaranteed a freeze on every attempt, but loading windowed after a successful fullscreen launch occasionally works fine. More worrying is that sometimes a fullscreen load after a windowed mode freeze will freeze as well, forcing a reboot since the task manager won't appear in front of the game. Launching in safe mode seems to work all the time, at least so far.

I've run out of things to try at this point. I've changed every video setting, reset the video settings to the default, updated NVidia drivers, downgraded the drivers as a test just in case (and then back), and completely uninstalled the game and all its local settings then reinstalled, to no success. Every other game I own works fine and there's none of the usual signs of video card problems. And it doesn't seem to be related to yesterday's patch, as there wasn't any issues playing yesterday or until this evening today.

I'm really, really open for ideas to try here.

EDIT: Some further experimentation has shown that a 4k resolution (3840x2160) is what seems to kill both windowed mode and fullscreen mode. Loading either at a lower resolution seems to work fine. I imagine why windowed fullscreen keeps dying is because it's rendering at my desktop 4k resolution. Well, at least I can work around this, but I wonder if anyone else has issues with that resolution.
