84 Sheshar Packs | Guess What!

dukhattdukhatt Member Posts: 236 Arc User
Howdy great peeps,

I opened 84 bloody Sheshar packs.
And guess what? NO Sheshar ........

Some people in the Fleet got them by only opening 4-16 packs.
Gods I am angry now ..

They should really make it give one after a certain number of packs...

86? Thanks a lot; you just did exactly what Cryptic/PWE wanted you to do, and helped prove that this new scheme is a success... Whether or not you actually get a pack for it, doesn't matter; you just gave Cryptic free money, and they didn't even have to guarantee anything in return. :D

Guess what?! It's not a Sheshar pack, but a R&D pack (with a temporary chance to get a Sheshar ship).

And at 1.1% odds, opening 84 packs means nothing.

I have no sympathy for you I'm afraid.

You do realise, of course, that you could have sold those promo packs on the exchange and made yourself 756 MILLION EC, enough to buy yourself a Sheshar from the Trade channel and you'd have 200 million ec left over.

    That's got to hurt.

Stupid gamblers will never learn. You just blew over $210 on nothing.

Well gambling i think can be a medical afliction, im not too familiarized with the sicological terms, so gamblers can spend and waste lots of money in something, even if there is a non gambling way to get the same thing.

Yeah, 840 Lobi Crystals will buy you a decent ship. You can almost get the T6 Hazari Destroyer, and there are several other Lobi Ships that'll upgrade to T5-U.

You do of course realize that if people like you didn't spend hundreds on gambling for a chance to get these uber ships cryptic would more than likely just sell them for a flat fee instead. In other words your gambling is ruining the game for the rest of us hence my lack of sympathy.

This type of promotion was proven to be a huge success years ago by people like the OP.

And this is why we can't have nice things...

You shouldn't lack sympathy, he's paying to keep the game running.

And it isn't ruining the game for anyone.

You want a flat fee for the promo ships? Fine, 500m for a prize ship, divided by 8m, the price of a promo pack= 52.5

X 250z, that's 15,725z. How is that for a flat rate? And that's just the market price.

If it was to go by the odds, you're looking at nearly 25k zen for the ship.

No one would buy it, no money would come in to make the game profitable, only the biggest of whales would ever get one, and it would be a disaster.

RNG is the only way to ensure that rare stuff is rare, that everyone has a chance to get it, and that the game remains profitable, all at the same time.

Not everyone wins the prizes or can play the game in a way to be able to afford them. But, if everyone were the same, it would be insipid.

You are absolutely right! It is people like the OP that keep the game going, so that I can buy ships, later on, on the Exchange, for much lower prices.

Nevertheless, seen just from the perspective of the OP, sorry to say, he made some very bad choices.

Funny how both can be true at the same time, really.

Well you would have been better off playing the "They don't know what they have game on the Exchange"

I got my Sheshar for 300 million ec via the exchange, saw another a few minuets after that was listed @ only 100 million ec that I missed and lastly one more that was going for a laughingly low 49 million that was gone faster than I could double click

I've been able to get all the hard to get limited time special ships with only using EC; granted I could only get one of each but I have them none the less ;)

    In inverse order:

You mean like the universally loved and appreciated reputation system?

The RNG has always been a fickle beast, or did you forget the happier days of the forum when people were applauding the amount of practice they got on, oh, Infected Ground Elite and the ease of finding Cure Space runs during the days when the only way to complete the MACO / KHG / Omega sets relied on the graces of the RNG?

Congrats to your fleeties, you might want to ask them what they've done to appease the RNG - and try it yourself. Statistics say that you need another ~16 packs to have opened enough packs to ensure that if you were to acheive every possible integer result you would have landed the 1.1% chance of landing the ship. Disclaimer:This does not automatically mean that the RNG would have graced you with every possible integer result and therefore ensure you would have the ship, however, vary rarely will sympathy about "bad luck" be garnered until the requisite investment is made to "mathematically demonstrate" that you invested at least twice the requisite amount of passes to get the item in hand. Since 1.1% translates to one ship in ~100 boxes, until you've attempted 200 boxes with failures every time, people will belive the RNG still has a "statistically significant" attempt to give you the item in question.

Obviously, as illustrated in this thread, there are enough "whales" and/or R&D players who have invested the requisite amounts or been graced by the RNG enough to offer these ships for a fraction of the 100 boxes worth of EC necessary to "ensure" one ship if the RNG graces you with one of every possible integral result.

Remember the sayin' "Don't hate on the playa' hate on the game"... :P In this case, the playa is Cryptic, the game is the RNG...
Detecting big-time "anti-old-school" bias here. NX? Lobi. TOS/TMP Connie? Super-promotion-box. (aka the two hardest ways to get ships) Excelsior & all 3 TNG "big hero" ships? C-Store. Please Equalize...

At 1.1%, the odds of getting a Sheshar in 84 attempts is equal to 1 minus the odds of not getting one or more Sheshar ships in 84 tries..

    1 - (1 - 0.011)^84 = 60.5%

which isn't bad odds, but it still not a sure thing... You can chalk this up to simply bad luck....

You should have sacrificed another virgin to the RNG Gods before doing this...

Yup, like I said, opening 84 packs, and getting nothing, means nothing. :)

Thx for the math, though; always handy to know.

The major problem with these promos, is all in how it's worded!

Open X-pack for a chance of either 10 lobi or, the chance of a grand prize X-ship!

So, with this misinformation, people tend to view this as a possible 50/50 scenario, where OH, I not only get what the pack normally offers but, a 50/50 chance for either some lobi or, a everything is awesome ship!

What is failed to be mentioned, is the odds are more like a 99.5% chance all packs will be lobi, whilst a 0.5% chance all packs will actually cough up a ship!

It's the same marketing tactics, that are so over used, by so many companies that it isn't even funny.

I mean just look how well casinos do for themselves, by simply feeding on the simple knowledge of knowing people have compulsions to gamble, despite if their chances of winning were 0.00000000000000000000001%, they would still find suckers who would go for it.

I bought about four, felt so disheartened and then realized...I'd want to have all three ships to have the complete set, I'm not convinced I would have flown it as my main ship, so I would probably have ended-up just selling it. I sold all of the R&D materials to get a good float of EC and I've just been upgrading things as much as 8k Dilithium will let me.

Regardless on what our opinion is of the OP opening that many Promotion! R&D Packs (they're not Sheshar Packs, that implies you get 1 for opening 1) the simple truth is this:

Cryptic / PWE wins. Whether you got your ship or not.

These threads always happen every now and then with players chasing ships down. STO's history is filled with people spending large sums of money and not getting what they wanted.

Bought packs, sold packs, then bought Sheshar for 495 mil, spent 800 lobi on Monbosh for console, to unlock frigates, and 200 lobi on the Elachi Torp so I have the complete Silent Enemy Set.

She is a good ship. Yes I did open 20 boxes, for Lobi and took a small chance. Sold all the Mats.

Like Lockboxes you, or rather I open them for the Lobi, anything else is a bonus.

I generated dilithium with Mike going on characters that I can take advantage of someone else fun in the game but hey somebody's got to pay the bills. Free to play doesn't mean free to run.

I do have a sub so they get money from me then.
