Been fiddeling with this for a while, and I'm out of ideas, so I thought I'd post here.
I'm getting a crash to desktop, but only when I try to beam down to certain maps. Docking with my fleet starbase, beaming down to Qo'nos, ESD, New Romulus, etc. This crash does NOT occur when beaming down to certain other spots, such as my Fleet dilithium mine.
In space I don't see any issues at all while running the game, I have full access to anything in a space map, can doff, queue, donate to fleet projects, etc. Its only when I try to transfer to those type of maps listed above that I get dumped to desktop.
The computer I'm using is an ASUS SonicMaster laptop, model number TP550L.
Stats are as follows: Intel i7-4500u, 1.8 ghtz, 8 gig RAM, 1 TB HD, and an NVIDA Geforce 820m graphics chipset. OS is Winodws 8, up to date on drivers and patches. Tried all three DX sets, 11, 9ex, and 9, all give the same results, same crash in exactly the same place.
I have been doing a lot of these tests when my network connection is via hotspot to my iPhone 5 connected via USB setup as a hotspot (2 gig plan). I will test this on a wifi network when I get the chance, but from monitoring my phone & data plan, and the performance of the game in the space zones, I seriously doubt this is a network issue. I'm leaning more towards this being an Nvidia issue, but I can't do anything to prove that.
corrupt game files could do it. That means a re-install, unless there is a repair tool -- i do not know if they provided one or not.
A graphics issue or sound issue could do it, I suppose ... turn sound off and turn graphics to lowest setting and test it. If that fixes it, either the hardware has failed or the driver is bad. Roll back a driver version, if that also fails, your card may have gone bad, try to find a diagnostic test program for it maybe (?). I can't recall if graphics cards have a self test.
You can also check your hard disk for errors.
Malware can crash games in very odd ways. Be sure your system is clean.
Try a wired connection, direct. Wireless creates problems, and a wired connection eliminates that variable, but it does NOT sound like a network problem.
I'll give the sounds and graphics tests a shot (can't remember if I tried them before or not).
Possible corrupt files, but if so that's a very specific set. I'll have to test that next time I'm on wifi, since I'm not pulling 4.5 gigs thru my phone to re-install the game client. I have run force verify a few times and the launcher isn't picking anything up. Given the lack of other issues in other programs and games, I doubt it's any corrupted Windows files.
Laptop is less that a few months old, so hardware failure is unlikely, and I use the same diagnostics package most PC joints use, so there's very little chance this is a hardware failure.
I use a heavy handed setup for virus and malware (full Norton, backed by Malwarebytes, run regularly). I also don't use a lot of the sites that viriii spread through (ex-PC tech, so I've got a full list and how to avoid them). I also don't use Internet Explorer at all, so that cuts a lot of the avenues into my laptop down
Thanks for the suggestions, I'll run the tests I can and see what happens. Any other ideas you guys have to try?
Well, no joy on any solutions so far. Tried cycling through all the suggestions and the results were the same each time.
Is there an issue with Nvida stuff & the game? I'm grasping at straws at this point.
Annoys me because an older laptop with less than half the hardware doesn't have this problem -.-
