I expected it would be a little more subtle but no, its right out in your face! Upgrading gear is a heavy Dilithium sink, time gated with the option to sink MORE Dilithium, and then for the cherry on top they add a random element!
Never mind how genetic re-sequencers and reputation traits are just too light for a modern STO! Now you also have to get all ships and grind them to get all the traits. Lovely really. Simultaneously pushing you to get all the ships while making alts a thing of the past.
Edit: People love to rail against Geko and D´angelo, but everyone should keep in mind these financials decisions are just the way things are in a f2p game. I hate the choices the devs have made as much as anyone, but blaming them is not the solution, rather people should understand they are living the f2p reality that so many seem to love. Want to play for free? Well here´s the cost.
No doubt. The primary reason why I've loathed F2P since I first came across the concept. NOTHING IS FREE from a company. I still spend a great deal of money on this game and sadly they never add a way to bypass all the 'awesome F2P monetization' elements which have utterly destroyed the gameplay experience for me.
If you are looking for an excellent PvE fleet consider: Omega Combat Division today.

So far 6 pages, a lot of speculation, frustrated people, and no answer still, or if there is even going to be one, and then, we all just go back to doing what we have been doing. Something trekky:)
Hopefully not for long...if they dont FIX this with the release notes for Tomorro'w patch...there will be more so called frustration and that might be a turning point of "no return"...pls dont make me pull the dooom thread again
If CBS wants to save brand they should take the IP away sooner rather than later. Don't really see how anything is gonna improve at this point. History speaks for itself and if changes are made for the better they usually get changed to worse than before and the players are punished for Cryptic's lack of forethought and oversite.
The issue there would be for the ST community to organize an email and social media protest campaign and direct it at CBS for allowing the license to be treated the way it is but that would take a serious amount of effort and focus and I dont think the community cares enough anymore frankly speaking.
