Well, the Varanus is officially pointless now.

The one thing this ship could do that the Feddy Bear science ships couldn't do better was the repair console. It wasn't fantastic, but it wasn't terrible either; at least the KDF science side had *something* special going for it, whereas now it doesn't. It's not like the Feddy Bears actually needed any new abilities; they already have way more ships, missions, etc. than the KDF anyway.

So...aside from aesthetics...can anyone even think of a reason for the Varanus to exist at this point? No Lt. Com tac slot, no special ability, no 5th (or 6th) science console slot...all of which are available to science captains on the Fed side. This ship was right on par with the Fed science ships when it first came out; unfortunately, Cryptic hasn't bothered to update it during the power creep since then, so it's been left behind. It's like an old DTM racer from the 80's that, while being an excellent car in its own right, just can't compete with the newer stuff, and has no place in the new competitive events.

I've tried to play the devil's advocate, and be fair about my complaints regarding lack of KDF content, but I give up; this just feels to me like they're telling KDF sci captains to go lockbox or bust, when it comes to our ship selection.

There's just no arguing this point. You're right. Thread closed. :P

Cryptic, Cryptic... Can the KDF PLEASE conquer (or incorporate) some civilization which is sci-based? Some excuse to get more robust KDF SCI ships into the game?

    R.I.P. Varanus.

It's still the only pure science vessel KDF side. Don't get me wrong, I utterly despise cross-faction consoles so I'm not justifying anything here - especially not the 'Metreon Gas Canisters'.
But as far as the Varanus goes, it's the only pure sci. ship for my KDF scis, not the greatest but a good ship nevertheless and I happen to really like the design. I'll be upgrading my Varanus ships to T5-U across the board, lockbox ships don't really appeal to me except weird situations like the new Kazon ship that I wanted ages ago and the Krenn destoryer that is still a Klingon ship even thoug a lockbox one, so I'm not looking at lockbox sci. ships even if they're better. I'll stick with my Varanus.

I disagree about the Varanus design, mainly the fact that the rods the Dual beams fire from are the same as the torpedo launchers, and the connectors between the impulse engines and the rest of the ship. Also you cant change the windows, unlike the lower tier ships.

Trashing my Fleet Varanus. The ship is lower that dirt now. Everyone will have the console.

Noooo Dev's! You'll killed a big exclusive feature for KDF. Just delete KDF and get it over with. Everyone sees you clearly hate them. You're giving all the good %$@# away to other factions. Did a Klingon steal your lunch money when you went to school? KDF Bullied the devs as children or something? Something had to happen. I'm serious...

...Only thing left is the Barrier generator and the shield drainer console. Oh, wait. I was wrong. You'll give out Disruptor javelins and auto-cannons next box. Nothing exclusive is safe! Just eff over the entire game. Give the feds enhanced battle cloak consoles that can be used on any ship. KDF will get class 8 shuttle pets in return, or Mk V retro phasers... I know how the deals go.

I am not a happy Klingon fan right now... I use to love this game. :(

The dress displayed on amazon is a blue and black dress, but it's not the same dress in the picture. If you're seeing blue & black you're slightly colored blind. A normal upright screen = white and gold.

why is a ship pointless because other ships can get it's console?
    Your pain runs deep.

The only reason anyone flies it, is because of the console. It was unique. The repair platform can also stealth allied ships in a small radius. The console was limited to that ship for a reason. I guess the devs just don't give a %$#$ about balance or exclusives.

In case people are too stupid to get it:

"My special my car with 3 wheels can fly. Only my company has rights to use that feature by law."

6 weeks later... New law (or lock box):

All companies can now use your 'exclusive' features, and you get nothing. You're no longer special... Now everyone can use your stuff without buying from you, or using your cars. Every company except yours can make boats, bikes, house, tanks, and horses fly. We really don't need yo' azz anymore... :(

That's what happened to the exclusive Varanus... R.I.P.

The varanus' console has lost it's exlusivenes status but the ship itself is not pointless. The (flee)Varanus is one of the few sci ships in the KDF shipyard, the other ones being the the DSD variants. Everything else is Lobi and lottery box.
It still has some value since it's one of the few klingons scis one can get without ridiculous costs attached to it. Which is admittedly a very sad state.

The frustrating thing with this, as with many other swaps, is the KDF get a junker Fed console in return.

If we'd got a Disruptor-flavor Nadeon bomb? That would have been a decent trade. Or a wide-angle quantuim torp. But instead we get a console that is virtually unused fedside.

You will be geting Rom consoles now, not Fed.
And you should know that Valdore shield heal console coming to all you kdf and feds sooner than later. I predict 6 months (2 more lockboxes) That console will make M\AM ships unstopable in matter of shields, so start making builds for hull healing <3

You know, just because the Feddies can get it's console now doesn't mean the Varanus is suddenly useless. It's every bit as useful as it was before. Just less special.

And exactly how special is the repair platform console, anyway? My sci has it equipped on his Varanus. I usually forget to use it because I have no trouble surviving without it and when I do use it, I honestly don't notice if it's even working.

Metreon gas, on the other hand, can be absolutely hilarious in the right hands. Especially (hello, particle manipulator!) a Sci. C'mon, it's EWP that explodes. What's funnier than that?

I honestly think the KDF is getting the better end of this deal.

**** that. KDF players are the most resourceful, vicious, cunning players in STO, and we're stubborn. If three years of outright neglect and derision didn't stop us, this won't either. The staff are being passive-aggressive, that means they can't be outright aggressive about it, they have to meet some specific criteria before they can delete the faction and make this the 'Starfleet Online' game that they want.

I say, "Who cares what they want? stick around and make a fight out of it." We play KDF for a reason, it's not just orion chicks in skimpy clothes, we stick it out because, even with everything they've been trying to do, we're a faction of fighters. Tenacious, vicious, cunning, Fighters.

Eh, you preach to the converted here. I'm playing STO because you can play Klingon - I had 3 KDF alts at L50 with full STF gear before my token Fed got past L6. Since I've mostly given up on the insane arms race that is PVP, KDF ships are just more fun in PVE.

If KDF are deleted, I'm out of the game. Not before.

Don't forget that Tribble was showing...
    Systems:
    • Vesta Multi-Mission Science Vessels.
      • Improved its base hull value from 27,900 to 29,040.
      • Improved its shield modifier from 1.35 to 1.4.
      • T5-U versions of this starship will benefit from the improvements above.
    • Advanced Research Vessel Retrofit.
      • Improved its turn rate from 9 to 10.
      • Improved its inertial from 40 to 45.
      • Added a +accuracy bonus on the Console - Universal - Tachyon Grid to both the passive and active effects.
      • The Fleet and T5-U versions of this starship will also benefit from the improvements above.
    • D'Kyr Science Vessel
      • Improved its turn rate from 10 to 11.
      • Improved its Inertia from 30 to 45.
      • Upgraded the Ensign Science bridge officer seat to Ensign Universal.
      • T5-U versions of this starship will benefit from the improvements above.
...a buff to several of the Federation Science Ships and none to the already inferior Varanus. Honestly, the only thing it has going for it now is that having its console go cross-faction might just unlock the Repair Platform for our other ships, since Federation and Romulan captains can use it on any ship. We'll see tomorrow... erm, later today.

What doesn't help the Varanus's cause is that it's pretty much a copy/paste of the DSSV, with the repair consoles (can we all say "heal boat"?) slapped on to justify it's C-store status...

Since I was never a fan of the DSSV to begin with, I've seen little point to grabbing this ship - though I scarfed it up when it was on summer special...

Now to see if the entire KDF lineup can benefit from the console... :)
Detecting big-time "anti-old-school" bias here. NX? Lobi. TOS/TMP Connie? Super-promotion-box. (aka the two hardest ways to get ships) Excelsior & all 3 TNG "big hero" ships? C-Store. Please Equalize...

I put my Repair Platform Console on my Fleet Corsair T-U.

It along with my upgraded ship, and the CD reduction to Voth Charge console and Point Defence Console are the high light of DR so far.

So this feel like a win not a loss for the KDF, alot of people have the Varanus because of the give away on the KDF side, but don't usually fly the Varanus so its console doesn't get alot of use, not it will.

The feds will have to lockbox while many in the KDF will be able to use it for free, such as myself on our prefered ship.

And the Varanus is slightly worse then fed sci ships because fed battle cruisers and raiders are worse then KDF verisons.

Cryptic doesn't seem to care about anything anymore, besides cash. Since Stahl left, the overall quality of the game experience has taken a nose dive and attention to the finer details - like trying to have things in game have some logic even in the Star Trek environment is all but gone.
