Oh yay, story content locked behind the "Elite" wall of the upgrade system, which requires using the P2W crafting system, and the P2W upgrade system and the P2W T6 ships or the P2W T5U Upgrades to ships.
Hopefully Cryptic still intends to have some worthwhile story for the rest of us, while the Top 2% of players are enjoying this new content.
I'm fairly certain this strategy has NEVER backfired on any MMOs ever. /endsarcasm
Everything on tribble has been completed with not upgraded t5 ships and mark 11\12 gear. It has also been completed with upgraded ships and gear more easily.
Absolutely nothing so far requires upgrades or crafting and there are mark 13 drops and mission rewards.
Elite claims to recommend mark 14 and traits. I predict people beating it without either in less than 2 months.

nothing in the blog stated that this was behind a "wall" of any elite content maybe its time to read the blog instead of second guessing it
I hardly think that Ultraviolet/Gold Mk XIV gear will be mandatory for players who know what they are doing, but it will certainly be easier with than without, if only because you can deal and endure that little extra bit of damage.
I'll probably never run it, but I hope that those that do, enjoy the challenge.
It's just not for me.
I will likely upgrade at least some of my current ships to T5-U.
I might even someday buy a T6 ship.
I might decide to upgrade some of my gear to Mk 13 or Mk14, but I kinda doubt it will be much. Mk 12 seems good enough for me as a place to reach. Especially considering I pretty much stop at Mk 11, unless I get lucky with some drops or the odd Exchange purchase on the cheap. Oh, and those rep reward boxes from slotting rep XP projects.
As long as the *CORE* game remains playable for purely F2P folks, I'll keep playing. I have a LTS but I'd rather spend my time playing the game instead of chasing the next "bestest gear". If mission drops and rewards are enough to cut it through the leveling process to lvl 60 and some of the queue missions, I'm cool with that.
This Elite only mission has me a bit worried though.
Lots of folks say players should do the normal level stuff to learn the basics before turning up the difficulty. I agree. I just wish there was more incentive to do the "normal" missions, since I have little desire to do most of the current Elite (soon to be Advanced) level stuff.
Since at this stage most folks run Elite exclusively, it makes it difficult to learn the missions on normal when hardly anyone runs them. I've sat in the queues for hours before in an attempt to run some of them. I end up logging out because they never got enough people to actually start one and it was time to log for the day. The last thing *I* want to do is step into an Elite the first time and blow it for everyone. And since I can't even try the missions out on normal I don't bother anymore.
Oh sure, I could read any number of the guides out there, watch youtube run-throughs until my eyes bleed Dilithium, but until I have first hand experience, I'm a newb. And newbs seemingly make mistakes that cause some folks physical suffering along the lines of being set on fire while having your fingernails ripped out after eating a 5 pound bag of broken glass.
Anyway, this mission sounds interesting from a story standpoint. I look forward to seeing what the brave folks who play this have to say about it.
Hello. My name is iamynaught and I am an altaholic.
He wasn't talking to you ynaught, but the guy who tried to claim that the eleven new single player story missions are locked behind a pay/elite gate.
I made no "claims" but rather sarcastic speculation.
With all the emphasis lately being put on upgraded ships, upgrading gear, and the new crafting system, one has to wonder just how "elite" a player has to be in order to enjoy the new content, and leading out of the gate with the first reveal on a new end game content that is solely designed for people with the "elite" ships and gear (IE upgraded, IE $$$ spent) doesn't exactly inspire alot of confidence in those of us who simply like to putt around and enjoy the Trek experience in story and ambiance.
That's what I was getting at.

You don't have to be elite at all, nor have top end gear, and nothing in the game requiresmyou craft. As I'd already said, everything on tribble has been completed in t5 not u ships with mark 11 and 12 gear. The elite queues aren't testable yet, but advanced are, so is the kobali ground.
Once the elite stuff like this one, comes out, I predict initially it will need mark 13 gear. But not 14. and do note you can get 13 from missions.
There's already people saying the new stuff isn't hard enough.
Edit: this is the first content that says you should have the best. The others are hyping the new stuff to get you to buy it. But you don't need it unless you pvp.
I keep asking my self, why the hell do we need level 50 to play these queues?? are the species encountered in em stronger than the Voth, Undine, Borg or watever (in the shows i mean)?? it makes no sense at all. It makes me feel that i am fighting a fake kazon or vadwaur, and they are iconians in disguise or something.
He wasn't talking to you ynaught, but the guy who tried to claim that the eleven new single player story missions are locked behind a pay/elite gate.
I know they weren't talking to me, but I was responding to what they said. The person they responded to said that the story, be it a queue or a regular story mission is locked behind the "Elite" wall. I believe (at least, I'd like to believe) that the original poster was simply talking about this one singular mission being that way.
I personally have no problem with it being behind that "wall", but I also wouldn't mind it if it came in a normal or advanced flavor, just so I could experience it.
With it being Elite only, it does go along the lines of reasoning that what ccarmichael07 said, that it is indeed locked behind "the "Elite" wall of the upgrade system". It even says so in the blog that players should have upgraded gear to stand a better chance.
Now, I do believe that the amount of great players the game has now will probably be able to finish this new Elite content with current standard gear, given enough time and practice. For the rest of us, the upgraded gear will help us flounder through until we get it as well. It's all about skill, then gear. Some of us simply do not have the skill level of others.
While someone could probably take any one of my alts, and any single ship I have with it's current gear and stomp any of the current content, *I* can't. I've been playing the game off and on since beta and frankly, I've peaked (and started a downward spiral :P) as far as skill goes. Age and some physical limitations will always keep me from being competitive. Which is why I play for fun, not to be the best.
I'm not complaining, or at least I'm not meaning to. I want the game to last and part of that is the Devs offering up new things to do. Some people love a challenge so this is great for them and I support it.
I just don't want to be left behind as far as the story goes.
Hello. My name is iamynaught and I am an altaholic.
Elite only. Right. Because that makes total sense. Could be fun, probably never going to play it. Oh well, hopefully there will be other queues that I can just run for fun and with a good chance of actually completing it. Shame you guys actually listened to all those 'the game is too easy' whiners and decided the solution was to make pugging practically impossible, but it's too late now.
You have 97 kindergarten queues you can go play instead.
It sounds like it'll rock. But in all honesty, if it's an Elite queue only, I'll probably rarely play it. It's not the difficulty that's off-putting, it's the full-fledged card carrying jerks that flood the elites that are. Not everyone is going to be able to slap together a private round for this to avoid attitudes/god complexes, and that's going to have a lot of us on the fence about jumping in there. Why there isn't a normal version to start out in is beyond me.
I just don't want to be left behind as far as the story goes.
A fair point.
If Cryptic is smart about it, they won't put any further story into group content. Look at all the problems it creates in SWTOR and FFXIV. Massive, constant drama between speedrunners and the casual story folk. Story is best left to single player content only. That way everyone can enjoy it or skip it as they please. If Cryptic goes down the same path as the aforementioned games, I will be severely disappointed in them. That's just not how you support a community, that's how you break it apart.
@ynaught, I hear ya. I think they made one elite only to try and get people to want to use the new paid systems. A normal/advanced version would be nice, but I also bet it's only a little while before I can take a slot with my fleetmates and not cause a fail nor any hard feelings.
One thing I did to keep my skills up is I made a character that I deliberately handicap. I have an engineer with less mthan 4k skill points spent (at the time there was a tutorial mission that forced you to spend some), and only the pounce trait. This means she also doesn't have any of the captain powers because spending skill points is required for those, not just leveling. She has one fleet console, but all the rest of her gear is from missions or the daily reputation boxes.
I fly her in estfs all the time and I can hold my own, though obviously she doesn't rock the world. But then I switch to my other characters and everything feels so much easier. Using her trains me to use what few powers I do have wisely. She keeps my paying attention and helps me keep my player skills sharp. And it pays off when I'm on my real characters.
As far as missing story, there really isn't much of any in the queues. I did like the attempt at story in cure and khitomer, especially how the ground and space are linked. But I haven't seen anything like that in a queue in a long time. None of the new missions will be gated or elite. There's a few nasty fights, on the same level as assimilated and the romulan finale defend new Romulus. If you can handle those two missions you can handle everything in delta rising.
The phrase "Elite Only" makes me think of WoW and a dozen other mmo's that I don't play. There was a reason I stayed with STO and not any other game. Besides the fact that it's free, I could play it and have fun. Every queue had different difficulties which meant that no one was ostracized on account of not being able to invest a huge chunk of their life in the game.
This has been my biggest pet peeve with mmo's in general. If there's an interesting story to be involved with, I want to be a part of it. If I can't be a part of it unless my friends and I have mad gaming skills and incomprehensibly powerful gear, then I lose interest altogether.
I do hope that eventually there will be a way for casual gamers to be a part of all this. I'm not holding my breath, though.
"Elite Only" = Just walk away. Not worth the grind, or the aggravation.
Detecting big-time "anti-old-school" bias here. NX? Lobi. TOS/TMP Connie? Super-promotion-box. (aka the two hardest ways to get ships) Excelsior & all 3 TNG "big hero" ships? C-Store. Please Equalize...

Calm down people, in all likelihood, if it can't be complated with mk xi gear now, they'll nerf it til it can soon enough.
Yeah, you're probably right. It's frustrating that casual players are getting intentionally excluded from certain parts of the game, but as you say, I'm sure they'll nerf it eventually.
Elite only eh? Interesting choice. We'll see how that works out.
This mission is gonna end badly to all new comers, and will end badly almost every time in the ques. Not gonna stop me. But mind you, I'm going to be jumping into an elite mission with out knowing what to do. There has to be a first time some time.

Hate to break it to you but there is nothing in the game that is P2W as there is nothing in the game you *need* to buy with money.

Actually they have flat out said that you need to either upgrade your ship or buy a T6 to not get curb stomped in elite level ques both of which require zen which someone has to actually buy.

*The first phase of this mission is hard. It is intended to cause Captains who arent good enough or who have weak gear to fail before making a large investment in time.*
So are you(PW) going to make a SPECIAL NOTE: TOP GEAR REQUIRED!! in the que?
You know this kind of PvE event sounds like it requires voice chat as well. Is that a new requirement that is needed for the DR expansion.
Also if you can fail that easy on the new elite events...I demand that if i succeed in it I get a very rare particle....no more random TRIBBLE shoots!!!

This design is to save everyone from the problem that makes all of the borg ground missions suck: the whole mission is easy until you get to the end boss then it's nearly impossible. So you have no idea if you can win or not until you hit the wall on the end boss. The new mission is setup so you will know right off the bat if you can win, so you don't waste the whole mission before failing. But if you rather they make you waste 30 minutes before failing instead of 3 minutes, sure, go ahead, keep on complaining.
That said, you have my support on the guaranteed rewards thing. I loathed the old STF reward system and I love the guarantees from rep. I'd really prefer if they made everything guaranteed.
I really doubt this "elite" content will only be doable with mk XIV epic gear and t6 fleet ships. Some common sense and mk XII/XIII rare gear on a fleet t5 is probably what u are going to need. If you are one of those extremely casual players that don't even bother to pick a color and put around an estf doing 2k damage, then yes this one is not for you.
From past history I don't see Cryptic making this so hard only a few can complete it. At least not for long anyways.
